A streaming device can replace the cable box and give your TV access to internet-delivered apps, but it does not automatically replace a cable subscription. To get a cable-style lineup, you may need a separate live-TV streaming plan; films and series may require additional subscriptions. Whether the switch costs less depends on the services you choose and the charges on your current bill.
What a streaming device replaces—and what it does not
A streaming player connects to a television and provides an interface for apps that deliver video over the internet. Roku describes its players as a way to watch live channels, news, sports, and on-demand entertainment instead of using a cable or satellite box. That is Roku’s description of its product, not a guarantee that every channel or program in a cable package will be available. Roku streaming players may also provide access to free, ad-supported channels and apps, while other apps require subscriptions or purchases.

The device itself is not the channel package. A live-TV streaming service is a separate subscription, and on-demand libraries are usually supplied by individual apps. Google says Google TV has no additional cost as a platform, though viewing content can require subscriptions, downloads, or purchases. Google TV is built into select televisions and is also available through separate streaming devices, so an existing smart TV may already do the job. Google TV

Free, ad-supported viewing
Free channels and apps can cover some news, entertainment, and other programming, usually with advertising. Roku describes access to hundreds of free live channels and free apps. The available titles and channels can change, and “free” access to one app does not mean every program or service on the device is free.

On-demand films and series
On-demand services offer libraries of films and shows to select when you want to watch. Each service sets its own subscription or purchase terms. Add only the services your household plans to use; the streaming player’s purchase price does not include their recurring charges.
Live-TV channel bundles
If you want broadcast and cable-style channels in a live schedule, look at a live-TV streaming plan. YouTube TV, for example, says its service includes more than 100 broadcast, cable, and regional sports networks, live sports, and unlimited DVR space. It documents up to six accounts and viewing on up to three devices at once. Those features describe YouTube TV’s offering; channel lineups and availability can vary by location, so check whether the specific stations, sports, and channels you want are included where you live. Set that total beside your current cable bill, including the TV package, equipment rental, and fees listed on the bill. If you already pay for broadband and would keep it either way, do not count the entire internet bill as a new streaming expense; state the assumption in your comparison. A streaming device is generally a one-time hardware purchase, while services are recurring. Roku says its players do not have monthly equipment rentals, but that does not remove subscription costs for paid services.
| Cost item | How to treat it |
|---|---|
| Streaming player | One-time hardware cost; a separate player may be unnecessary if your TV already supports the apps you need. |
| Internet | Include any new or increased broadband cost. If you already pay for internet and will keep the same plan, distinguish that existing expense from the added cost of streaming TV. |
| Live-TV plan | Recurring charge if you want a bundled live channel lineup. Check the current price and local channel availability with the provider. |
| On-demand apps and add-ons | Recurring charges for the services and extras you select; do not assume they are included with the device or live-TV plan. |
| Current cable TV | Use your actual package charge, equipment rental, and applicable fees from your bill. |

Check channels, household features, and device compatibility
Before switching, make a short list of what your household watches and compare it with the plan and device you are considering. In particular, confirm:
- Local stations and regional sports: availability depends on location and provider lineup. Do not assume every local broadcast or sports event will be carried.
- Must-have cable channels: search each service’s current lineup for the channels you actually watch.
- Recording and simultaneous viewing: compare DVR rules, account limits, and the number of concurrent streams with your household’s habits. YouTube TV documents unlimited DVR, up to six accounts, and up to three devices at once for its plan.
- TV and connection: a separate player generally connects through HDMI and needs power and an internet connection. For Google TV devices, Google lists an HDMI port, internet connection, Google Account, power outlet, and compatible mobile device among setup requirements.
- Resolution and content: Roku notes that 4K and HDR require compatible TVs, ports, and content; the device alone cannot make incompatible equipment or video content display in those formats.
- Ease of use: decide whether you prefer a single bundled channel guide or selecting among separate apps and subscriptions.
Decide whether you need a separate player
If your smart TV already supports the apps and services you want, you may be able to stream without buying another box or stick. A separate streaming media player for TV is useful when the television lacks suitable apps, its platform no longer supports a service you need, or you want a different interface. Roku’s current player comparison page names Streaming Stick, Streaming Stick Plus, Streaming Stick 4K, and Roku Ultra models; availability and prices should be checked on the page because product ranges can change. Is streaming a good cable replacement for your household?
Streaming is a practical cable-box alternative when your television and internet connection can run the apps you want, and the available services cover the programming your household watches. The main trade-off is that a traditional channel bundle may become a mix of separate free apps, on-demand subscriptions, and an optional live-TV plan. Check the lineup and total recurring charges before cancelling cable; the device alone does not reproduce a paid channel package.
