How to Fix Character Loss on an ARK Server

A missing ARK survivor usually points to a failed save, wrong path or format, transfer damage, or permissions problem. This guide explains how to preserve the live files, restore the least destructive backup, authenticate admin commands, and prevent another loss.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

If an ARK survivor disappears after a restart, stop the server and preserve its current files before trying a command or replacing a save. Copy the complete ShooterGame/Saved directory, including every subfolder and file, to a separate dated location. Then restore the newest copy in which the survivor still existed, start the server, and verify the character before deleting or overwriting any backup.

This approach can recover a lost character without wiping the map when a usable save or profile backup exists. It cannot guarantee a complete restoration when every copy of the survivor profile is gone.

Why an ARK character disappears

A missing survivor is usually a save, path, permission, transfer, or authentication problem rather than proof that the map itself is permanently damaged. The same symptom can have different causes, so identify what changed immediately before the loss.

The server could not write its save directory

The account running the dedicated server must be able to read, create, and modify the server’s ShooterGame/Saved directory. If it can start the process but cannot write this folder, the server may appear to run normally while characters and world changes vanish at restart.

On Windows, check both the folder’s security permissions and User Account Control (UAC). Confirm the actual account used by the service, scheduled task, container, or launch script; checking only your interactive administrator account is not enough. If the server has run but never created ShooterGame/Saved, treat that as a path or permissions failure first.

A crash happened before the next world save

The ARK Official Community Wiki documents a normal world-save interval of every 15 minutes. That interval is not a recovery guarantee: a crash before the first save, or before a recent change was written, may leave no copy containing the latest character state. A clean shutdown and a successful save are therefore different things.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the time of the last confirmed sighting as your reference point. If the survivor was online only a few minutes before a crash, a backup from the preceding save may not include that session. Preserve logs in the saved directory as well; they can help establish which map and installation actually ran, even though a log cannot recreate a missing profile.

A transfer or crash damaged the survivor profile

Transfers can leave a character profile out of sync with the map or cluster, especially after a crash or interrupted transfer. The official-save guidance provides -BackupTransferPlayerDatas to create an additional character-profile backup during transfers. This backup has a narrower scope than a complete world rollback, but it can avoid reverting unrelated building and tribe changes.

Ask whether the survivor vanished on the source map, the destination map, or both. That distinction matters when checking cluster data and transfer-profile copies. Do not assume that a profile from one map can simply be dropped into another map’s save directory; the map, tribe, cluster, and player data must belong to a compatible save set.

The save format or folder is wrong

A valid character file in the wrong map, cluster, or save format can look exactly like a deleted survivor. For the applicable official-save format, the documented startup options are -newsaveformat and -usestore. A save archive must be extracted into the appropriate ShooterGame/Saved/SavedArks location, with the map .ark file, tribe files, and related folders kept together. Do not copy only a character file into an otherwise unrelated map directory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wrong-path failures are especially easy to miss on a host with more than one installation or map instance. Verify the startup path and active map name, then compare the modified dates of the files you are inspecting with the time the server was running. Restoring a correct backup to an inactive installation changes nothing on the live server.

An administrative command ran without authentication

Multiplayer servers require authentication before privileged commands work. Run enablecheats <admin_password> first. Depending on the server and command, the command may also require the cheat or admincheat prefix. An unauthenticated command normally does nothing, but repeated experimentation on a live world makes diagnosis harder and can alter data when it does work.

What to check before changing anything

Write down the last time the survivor was seen, the map, character name, tribe, approximate level, location, and whether a transfer had just occurred. Ask the player whether the character was uploaded, downloaded, killed, or merely absent after a restart. These details help distinguish a profile problem from loading the wrong map or save.

Do not let a hosting panel, watchdog, or scheduled task repeatedly restart the server while you investigate. Each restart can create another save state and overwrite the evidence you need. Stop the process, preserve the live directory, and only then inspect copies or startup arguments.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the server has never produced ShooterGame/Saved, there is no normal player save to repair yet. Correct the installation path and write permissions first. If the directory exists, preserve it even when it appears empty or incomplete; its configuration and log files may identify the active installation.

What is stored in ShooterGame/Saved

The complete directory is the recovery unit, not just the file that appears to represent a player. The ARK Official Community Wiki identifies this directory as containing:

  • Tribe data
  • Player and survivor data
  • World and map data
  • Server configuration data
  • Log files
  • Cluster data, where a cluster is used

Because these items are related, replacing only one file can create a mismatch between a survivor, its tribe, and the world that should contain it. Preserve the entire tree before making any change.

Keep the backup outside the live installation, preferably on a separate disk or host. An external USB hard drive or SSD is a practical destination for complete ARK server backups, provided it has enough free space and is not the only place a copy exists. Give each copy a date, time, map or cluster label, and a note such as “before character recovery.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the least destructive recovery method

Use the newest known-good source that contains the missing survivor. The options differ in how much of the world they roll back and how much filesystem access they require.

Recovery source What it restores Rollback scope Best use
Complete ShooterGame/Saved copy World, player, tribe, configuration, logs, and cluster data contained in that copy Broad; changes after the copy can be lost The survivor and its surrounding world must be returned to a known-good state
Rotating server save backup A complete server save at an earlier point, subject to the backup set retained by the server Broad; choose the closest good point The server’s own backup is newer or more reliable than a manual copy
Transfer-profile backup created with -BackupTransferPlayerDatas An additional character-profile copy made during transfers Narrower; it can avoid rolling back the whole map The loss follows a transfer or interrupted transfer and the profile backup exists
Manual reconstruction Only what an administrator can recreate from records and commands Variable and incomplete No usable save or profile backup remains

A complete rollback is the most data-complete choice, but it can remove structures, tribe changes, inventories, and exploration progress made after the selected copy. A profile-only backup is less disruptive when it is valid, yet it may not contain world relationships or changes made after the transfer. Compare that trade-off with the affected player before restoring.

The official-save documentation gives 20 as the default value for -MaxNumOfSaveBackups. That is a retention count for rotating backups, not a promise that every point in time or every transfer profile is recoverable.

Safe recovery procedure

Perform the following work from the server host or from the management panel that controls its files. If a host does not expose the save directory, ask its administrator to perform the same sequence and preserve the original files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Stop the ARK server cleanly. Use the server’s stop command or control-panel action, then wait for the process to exit. Disable automatic restart temporarily so a supervisor cannot start the server while files are being copied.
  2. Copy the entire save directory. Copy ShooterGame/Saved, including all subfolders and files, to a separate location. Add the date and a description such as “before character recovery” to the backup name. Do not move the only copy; make a second copy.
  3. Record the current state. Keep the original directory untouched. Note the map, server type, cluster arrangement, startup arguments, and the player’s last known location, tribe, and approximate time of the loss.
  4. Find the last known-good save. Check the server’s rotating backups and external copies in reverse chronological order. Select the newest one in which the survivor was present. If the loss followed a transfer, look specifically for a transfer-profile backup made with -BackupTransferPlayerDatas.
  5. Confirm the destination. Restore to the save directory used by this map and server instance. For the applicable official-save format, verify that -newsaveformat and -usestore are present in the startup configuration and that extracted files belong in ShooterGame/Saved/SavedArks.
  6. Restore as a complete set. Replace the working save directory with the known-good copy, or restore the archive using the host’s documented restore function. Keep the pre-recovery directory outside the live path until testing is complete. Do not mix a map .ark file from one backup with tribe or player files from another unless you are deliberately performing an advanced, version-specific repair.
  7. Check permissions before starting. The account that launches the server must be able to read, create, and modify the restored directory. On Windows, recheck NTFS permissions and UAC behavior; on other systems, verify the service account’s ownership and write access using the host’s normal administration tools.
  8. Start the server and test with the affected player. Confirm that the survivor appears, has the expected name and level, belongs to the correct tribe, has the expected inventory, and is at the expected location. Also inspect important structures and world changes so you know exactly what the rollback restored.
  9. Preserve the successful recovery. Stop and copy the now-working ShooterGame/Saved directory again before resuming normal play. Keep both the pre-recovery and successful-recovery copies until the player has confirmed the result.

Fix persistence so the loss does not recur

Verify the real server account and path

Find the account that actually launches the server. A service, scheduled task, container, or hosting panel can use a different account from the one that uploaded or edited the files. Grant that account the ability to read, create, and modify ShooterGame/Saved and its contents. Also verify that the launch configuration points to the intended installation; a server can save successfully to one installation while you inspect another.

Check whether the directory is created at all

If a fresh server never creates ShooterGame/Saved, do not continue with character commands. Correct the installation path and permissions first. A missing directory means there is no normal save set from which to recover recent progress.

Plan around the 15-minute save interval

Since the documented default world-save interval is every 15 minutes, treat unsaved progress as at risk during testing, transfers, and shutdowns. A clean stop immediately after an important event gives the server an opportunity to write, but it still does not replace independent backups.

Retain rotating backups

For the official-save configuration, set -MaxNumOfSaveBackups=<integer> to the number of rotating copies you want to retain. The cited documentation lists 20 as the default. Choose a value that fits available storage and the age of failure you need to recover from; a rotation is useful only if older copies have not already been overwritten.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protect transfer profiles

Add -BackupTransferPlayerDatas when transfers are part of your setup. Keep those profile backups on storage separate from the live server. A profile-only copy can be the least disruptive option after a transfer failure, while a complete save copy remains necessary for world-wide corruption or accidental deletion.

Schedule complete copies

Regularly copy the complete ShooterGame/Saved directory to a separate disk or host. Include all subfolders and files, use dated names, and periodically test opening or restoring a copy on a non-production instance. A backup that has never been tested is only an assumption. Retain enough generations to cover the time between discovering a loss and the last known-good state; do not rely on a single rotating copy.

Using administrator commands safely

Commands are not a substitute for a save backup. They may change the live world and cannot recreate information that no longer exists in a usable profile.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Stop the server and make the complete filesystem backup described above.
  2. Start the server only when you have a rollback copy and know which account controls administration.
  3. Authenticate with enablecheats <admin_password> on the multiplayer server.
  4. Use the required cheat or admincheat prefix for a privileged command when the server requires it.
  5. Make one controlled change at a time, record what was run, and have the affected player verify the result.
  6. Stop and preserve the resulting save if the repair works; if it does not, restore the pre-command copy rather than stacking more changes on an uncertain state.

The exact command behavior can vary by game version, platform, server configuration, and transfer state. Do not assume that a command which works on one map or version will recreate the same tribe relationships, inventory, or progression on another.

Official-save format and archive checks

When using the documented official-save format, check these items together:

  • The server starts with -newsaveformat.
  • The server starts with -usestore.
  • The archive is extracted under the correct ShooterGame/Saved/SavedArks directory.
  • The map .ark file, tribe files, player-related files, and associated folders came from the same known-good save set.
  • The restored files match the map and server instance you are launching.

If any one of these checks fails, the server may load a world while ignoring the character data you expected. Correct placement and startup arguments before attempting a second restoration.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

When no backup contains the survivor

There is no documented guarantee that an administrator can fully recreate a survivor without a usable save or profile backup. Manual rebuilding may restore some levels, items, or relationships, but the result depends on the server version, platform, transfer state, administrator records, and what information remains in the world.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Be precise with the affected player about what can be verified: name, tribe, level, inventory, structures, location, and last confirmed presence. Recreate only what your records support, and explain which progression or relationships cannot be proven. Do not delete the current world in the hope that a reset will make an unavailable profile reappear.

Managed-server considerations

If you do not control the filesystem, ask the hosting administrator for four specific checks: a dated copy of ShooterGame/Saved, the last backup in which the survivor existed, the account or service responsible for writing the directory, and the active startup arguments. Request a restore to a separate test instance when the platform supports it, so the current world remains available while the player verifies the character.

Whether a provider can perform a profile-only restore, expose rotating backups, or recover cluster data depends on its own controls. Obtain those details before authorizing a broad rollback. Managed hosting can be worthwhile for administrators who cannot maintain permissions, save paths, and backup schedules themselves, but confirm restoration features and retention terms rather than assuming every provider offers the same controls.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did my ARK character disappear after a server restart?

The server may not have been able to write ShooterGame/Saved, the crash may have occurred before the next 15-minute world save, a transfer may have damaged the profile, or the server may be loading the wrong path, map, or save format. Preserve the current directory before testing any theory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where is the ARK player save file?

Player, tribe, world, configuration, log, and cluster data are kept under the server’s ShooterGame/Saved directory. Treat the entire directory as the recovery unit instead of copying one apparent player file.

Can I recover the survivor without wiping the map?

Sometimes. A valid transfer-profile backup made with -BackupTransferPlayerDatas has a narrower rollback scope than restoring the complete directory. A complete save restore can roll back world, tribe, structure, and inventory changes made after that backup.

How do I restore a lost survivor on a dedicated server?

Stop the server, disable automatic restart, copy the entire ShooterGame/Saved directory, select the newest known-good backup, restore it to the correct map instance, verify permissions and any required startup options, then start and test with the affected player.

What does -MaxNumOfSaveBackups control?

It controls how many rotating save backups are retained for the applicable official-save configuration. The documented default is 20. It does not guarantee that a particular survivor or transfer profile exists in every retained copy.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

What if the server never created ShooterGame/Saved?

Treat it as an installation-path or permissions problem. Confirm the account that actually launches the server can read, create, and modify the intended folder before trying character commands; there may be no normal save to recover.

Do admin commands recreate everything?

No. Authenticate with enablecheats <admin_password> and use the required cheat or admincheat prefix, but commands can alter the live world and cannot guarantee restoration of profile data, tribe relationships, inventory, or progression that no longer exists in a backup.

What should I ask an ARK hosting provider to do?

Request the dated ShooterGame/Saved backup in which the survivor existed, the active startup arguments, the service account writing the folder, and a restore to a separate test instance if available. Confirm whether profile-only restoration and cluster-data recovery are supported.

The Bottom Line

Stop the server, copy the complete ShooterGame/Saved directory, and keep the original untouched. Restore the newest known-good complete save or transfer-profile backup, verify the map, format, path, permissions, tribe, inventory, and location, then preserve the successful recovery. If no usable profile or save backup contains the survivor, explain the limits of manual reconstruction instead of promising a complete restoration.
