DayZ loot is controlled by the mission’s Central Economy (CE), not by one universal “loot multiplier.” For item populations, edit the item’s entry in db/types.xml or a registered custom types file. Use db/globals.xml for global CE limits and timers, db/economy.xml for subsystem switches, db/events.xml for dynamic events, and cfgspawnabletypes.xml for attachments and cargo. Back up the active mission, make the narrowest change, restart the server, and verify the RPT and CE logs.

Which DayZ file controls the change you want?
The quickest way to avoid broken loot is to choose the file that owns the setting. DayZ’s Central Economy is split into several XML files, while cfggameplay.json controls gameplay systems rather than normal item populations.

Gameplay JSON settings, not ordinary loot counts |
The mission folder is the important boundary: CE files belong to the mission selected by the server, whereas serverDZ.cfg sits beside the server executable and selects that mission. Editing a similarly named test mission has no effect on the running world.
Prepare the active mission before editing
Back up the whole mission folder
Stop the server or use your host’s maintenance controls, then copy the entire active mission folder to a dated backup. Include the original XML and JSON files, any mod configuration, and the current logs. A full folder backup lets you roll back a malformed file without reconstructing the default CE.

Confirm the mission selected by serverDZ.cfg
Open serverDZ.cfg and identify the mission directory used by the server. Make changes only inside that directory. If you administer several maps or profiles, write the mission name in your change notes so an update is not accidentally applied to an inactive copy.
Use a narrow change first
Change one item or one parameter, restart, and inspect the result before changing several systems at once. This makes an RPT warning attributable and prevents a bad tag or malformed XML file from being mistaken for a gameplay balance problem.
Increase or reduce an item with types.xml
Find the item by classname
Open db/types.xml and search for the exact classname used by the game or mod. Do not search by the display name shown in an inventory. A representative CE entry is:
<type name="AK74">
<nominal>6</nominal>
<lifetime>28800</lifetime>
<restock>0</restock>
<min>4</min>
<quantmin>-1</quantmin>
<quantmax>-1</quantmax>
<cost>100</cost>
<flags count_in_cargo="0" count_in_hoarder="0" count_in_map="1"
count_in_player="0" crafted="0" deloot="0"/>
<category name="weapons"/>
<usage name="Military"/>
<value name="Tier3"/>
</type>
Understand the fields before changing them
nominal: the target population the CE attempts to maintain.min: the minimum target used by the CE when deciding whether more copies are needed.lifetime: persistence time; the documented example expresses it in seconds.restock: the restock timing value for the entry.quantminandquantmax: quantity ranges for stackable or liquid items. A value of-1in the example indicates that quantity is not being set as a percentage range for that item.cost: the CE cost used in its spawn balancing.flags: whether copies count in cargo, hoarders, the map, players, crafted inventory, or dynamic-event loot.category: the broad item category.usage: the location types where the item is eligible.value: the map tier or value class that constrains eligible locations.
For more of the item in the world, raise nominal and, when appropriate, min. Raising only nominal can still leave the CE satisfied by the existing minimum logic; raising both changes the target and the refill threshold. Keep the location tags valid for the map and server version. An item with a correct count but an incompatible usage or value can appear rarely or not at all.
Do not treat lifetime as a spawn-rate slider
lifetime determines how long an item can persist under the CE’s cleanup rules. A longer lifetime can leave more copies in the world, but it can also make unwanted loot occupy spawn positions for longer. Population, minimum target, restock behavior, and cleanup persistence interact; adjust them deliberately rather than multiplying every number.

Use a registered custom file for durable changes
Direct edits to vanilla files are convenient for a quick test, but updates can overwrite them and mod changes can create merge conflicts. A custom CE file keeps your overrides separate and makes rollback and auditing easier.
Create the custom folder and file
Under the active mission, create a folder such as custom_ce/ and place a file such as custom_types.xml inside it. Put your custom <type> entries in that file. Merely dropping an XML file into db/ does nothing; the CE must be told to load it.
Register the file in cfgeconomycore.xml
<economycore>
<classes>
<!-- retain the server’s existing rootclass entries -->
</classes>
<ce folder="custom_ce">
<file name="custom_types.xml" type="types" />
</ce>
</economycore>
Keep the existing rootclass entries unless you have a specific reason to change them. The <ce> registration mechanism can load custom types, spawnabletypes, globals, economy, events, messages, and, since game version 1.28 in the cited configuration reference, randompresets files.
Know how overrides and duplicates behave
Custom files merge with the vanilla CE. A matching item name can replace an existing entry; duplicate definitions otherwise follow load order. Keep one authoritative definition for each classname whenever possible. If two mods or custom files define the same item, inspect the load order and the resulting RPT messages instead of assuming the last file you edited wins.
Register custom tags and class roots when needed
Declare new category, usage, and value names
If a custom item uses a category, usage, or value name that is not already present in the vanilla limits, declare that name in cfglimitsdefinitionuser.xml. Unknown tags can cause the CE entry to be rejected, so adding the tag in types.xml alone is not enough.

Add a root class only for a genuinely new hierarchy
Add a rootclass in cfgeconomycore.xml only when the item inherits from a class hierarchy that the CE does not already know. Ordinary descendants of Inventory_Base, DefaultWeapon, and DefaultMagazine normally use registered roots. Adding unnecessary roots makes the configuration harder to maintain and can hide the real cause of a rejected class.
Change global CE behavior and dynamic systems
Global limits and timers: globals.xml
Use db/globals.xml for global CE parameters rather than adding item-specific values to types.xml. Preserve the parameter’s declared type: type="0" represents an integer and type="1" represents a float. Assigning a decimal value to an integer parameter can coerce it unexpectedly; a float that becomes zero is a strong sign that the wrong type was used.
The official configuration examples include defaults such as dyn_radius=30, dyn_dmin=1, and dyn_dmax=5. These are CE configuration defaults, not measured population statistics, so do not interpret them as a universal recommendation for every map or server.
Subsystem switches: economy.xml
db/economy.xml controls whether whole CE subsystems initialize, load saved state, respawn, and save. Its flags apply to groups such as dynamic entities, animals, zombies, and vehicles. Disabling a subsystem is broader than changing one item’s count; use it only when you intend to affect the entire group.
Dynamic events: events.xml
Helicopter crashes, convoys, and similar dynamic events use db/events.xml and related event files. Event definitions control when and how those event objects spawn. They are separate from the ordinary item population in types.xml, so increasing a weapon’s nominal value does not by itself create more crash sites or convoys.

Attachments, cargo, and damage: cfgspawnabletypes.xml
Use cfgspawnabletypes.xml for attachment groups, cargo presets, and spawn-damage ranges. If the weapon appears but has the wrong magazine, optic, cargo contents, or condition, this is the file to inspect rather than changing the weapon’s nominal count.
Startup persistence and event saving
The configuration example includes save_events_startup=true and save_types_startup=true. Treat these as defaults from that example, not as settings to copy blindly into every mission. Confirm the surrounding schema and the version of the server files before changing startup persistence behavior.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDo not use cfggameplay.json for ordinary loot counts
cfggameplay.json handles gameplay systems such as stamina, base-building checks, user-interface behavior, temperatures, and object spawning. It is not the normal location for changing how many rifles, food items, or clothing pieces the CE maintains. A syntax error in this JSON can cause the server to fall back to defaults, so validate it whenever you edit gameplay settings.
Validate, restart, and verify the result
- Validate the edited format. Check that every XML element is closed, attributes are quoted, there is one document root, and the JSON has valid commas, braces, and value types. A file can be well-formed XML yet still contain an invalid CE tag, so use both a syntax check and the server’s schema warnings.
- Stop and restart the server. CE mission files are loaded during startup. Do not judge a change while the old process is still running.
- Inspect the RPT and CE logs. Look for rejected files, unknown tags, missing roots, malformed XML, mission-file warnings, and duplicate definitions.
- Enable targeted diagnostics when necessary. The vanilla example exposes
log_ce_lootspawn,log_ce_lootcleanup,log_ce_lootrespawn, andlog_ce_statistics. Turn on only the diagnostics needed to isolate the problem, then return noisy logging to normal after verification. - Test in the intended conditions. Check the correct map, locations, and item class. A military-only item will not prove a change by appearing in a residential building, and a custom event item may not appear until its event conditions are met.
Keep the restart time, edited file, classname, old values, new values, and relevant log lines in your change notes. This is especially useful when several mods register CE files or when a server update changes the base mission.
Fix the common reasons a loot change does not apply
Nothing changes after editing
- Confirm that you edited the mission selected in
serverDZ.cfg. - Confirm that a custom file is registered through a
<ce>block; a loose file indb/is ignored. - Restart the server completely and check the startup RPT for the file name.
- Check whether another later-loaded definition overrides the same classname.
The item never spawns
Verify the exact classname, inherited root class, and every category, usage, and value tag. Compare those names with the map’s valid limits and inspect RPT warnings for an unknown tag or rejected class. A high nominal value cannot compensate for an invalid location constraint.
Best Value
The item appears in the wrong places
Review usage and value first. Those tags constrain eligible location types and tiers. Also check that you did not copy tags from a different map or server version whose limit definitions differ.

A float setting becomes zero
Open globals.xml and compare the value’s declared type. Use type="1" for a floating-point parameter and type="0" for an integer. Then restart and inspect the RPT for conversion warnings.
The entire gameplay configuration has no effect
Validate cfggameplay.json as JSON, including commas and nesting. One syntax error can make the server use defaults, which may look like several unrelated settings failed at once.
The change breaks after a game update
Move overrides out of vanilla files and into registered custom files. Keep a copy of the original mission and review the updated vanilla definitions before deciding whether your override still matches the current schema, class hierarchy, and map limits.
Direct vanilla edits or registered custom files?
| Implementation | Update safety | Rollback | Mod coexistence | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Direct edit to a vanilla CE file | Lower; updates can overwrite the change | Simple for a one-off test if a backup exists | More susceptible to merge conflicts | Quick, isolated testing on a disposable mission |
| Registered custom CE file | Higher; vanilla files remain untouched | Remove or replace one custom file | Clearer separation from mod and base content | Persistent server tuning and production deployments |
For a live server, the custom-file approach is usually the safer default. Keep the registration in cfgeconomycore.xml, document the intended load order, and make each custom file narrowly scoped, such as one file for item populations and another for event overrides.
