1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen CarPlay won’t connect or keeps disconnecting, first identify whether your car uses a USB cable or a wireless connection, then test one change at a time. For wired CarPlay, check the cable and the correct USB port. For wireless CarPlay, check Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Auto-Join and the car’s pairing mode. If those checks do not help, restart both devices and set up the car again.
Start with the connection type and compatibility
CarPlay works only with a compatible iPhone and vehicle, and it must be available in your region. Apple’s CarPlay troubleshooting guide recommends contacting the vehicle manufacturer if you are unsure whether your car supports it. Update the iPhone to the latest iOS version available for that device, and check with the vehicle maker for current stereo software or firmware.

Apple describes setup as connecting an iPhone to a vehicle using its USB port or wireless capability in the iPhone User Guide. Confirm which connection type your car supports before following the relevant steps below. After each change, try CarPlay again; that makes it easier to identify what resolved the problem.

Test the cable and CarPlay USB port
- Disconnect the iPhone, then reconnect it securely.
- Try a different cable that supports data and has plugs compatible with both your iPhone and car. A charging-only cable may not carry the data CarPlay needs.
- If the vehicle has multiple USB ports, try another one. Check the car’s manual to find the port intended for CarPlay; it may be marked with a CarPlay or smartphone icon.
A different cable or port is a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed fix. If the vehicle supports wired and wireless CarPlay, connecting by USB may prompt the iPhone to offer wireless connection on later drives.

Try a direct connection if you use an adapter
Apple says a USB-C-to-Lightning adapter works with wired CarPlay in most vehicles, but some combinations of adapter, cable and vehicle entertainment system can interrupt the connection. If you use that setup, connect the iPhone directly to the car with a compatible USB cable and test again. This is a targeted check for an adapter setup, not a reason to assume adapters are generally faulty.
Fix wireless CarPlay that is not connecting
Check Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Auto-Join
- On the iPhone, make sure both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are turned on.
- Open Wi-Fi settings, select the CarPlay network and confirm Auto-Join is enabled.
- Put the vehicle stereo in wireless or Bluetooth pairing mode, then follow the car’s pairing instructions.
The pairing procedure varies by vehicle. Apple notes that in some cars you begin setup by pressing and holding the steering-wheel voice-command button. Use the vehicle manual if the stereo does not appear or pairing does not start.

Confirm Siri and CarPlay permissions
Siri needs to be enabled for CarPlay. If the iPhone is not detected, check whether Screen Time restrictions are blocking it. On current iOS versions, the path is Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Allowed Apps; make sure CarPlay is allowed when restrictions are on. Menu names can vary slightly by iOS version. Apple also lists these checks in its troubleshooting guidance.
