Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →First identify the failure stage: does the server firmware fail to list the USB or disc, does it see the device but fail to launch it, or does the installer begin and then hang or lose access to its files? Each points to a different fix. Check the server’s one-time boot menu and note the exact screen message before changing boot settings or installer options.
Start by locating where boot fails
Record the distribution and release, server model, how the ISO was written, whether the system is using UEFI or legacy BIOS, and the exact error or last visible boot line. Then use the symptom that matches what you see:

- The USB or disc is missing from firmware: check connections, firmware visibility, and boot-device settings.
- The device appears, but the server returns to its usual disk or says no bootable device: check the selected boot entry and mode, then verify and recreate the media.
- A Secure Boot or signature error appears: investigate the image and the firmware’s trust chain.
- A bootloader menu appears, but the installer hangs or cannot find files: troubleshoot media reads, device recognition, and installer logs.
A missing boot entry is not the same problem as a checksum error or an installer driver issue. Avoid changing several settings at once; make one change, retry, and note the result.

- Check that the USB stick is firmly connected, or that the optical disc and drive are present. In firmware setup, confirm the device is recognized and that booting from that device type is enabled. Debian’s installation media troubleshooting guide specifically advises checking optical-drive support and enablement for discs.
- Restart and open the one-time boot menu, rather than relying only on boot order. Ubuntu notes that a startup key such as F12 may open this menu, but the key depends on the system; check the server’s documentation or startup prompt. See Ubuntu’s USB creation guide.
- For a USB test, connect it directly to a motherboard or server port and temporarily disconnect other bootable devices. This is a simple isolation step, not proof that a particular port or device is faulty.
- On a remotely managed server, use its documented console or virtual-media feature if that model provides one. The available controls and steps are model-specific.
If the device remains absent, stay in firmware and hardware checks. Installer kernel options cannot help until firmware can see and launch the medium.

Choose the boot entry that matches the intended mode
UEFI and legacy BIOS follow different boot paths. A boot menu may show separate entries for the same USB device; choose the one matching the mode intended for this installation. Ubuntu’s amd64 netboot documentation distinguishes the signed EFI bootloader path used by UEFI from PXELINUX in legacy mode. Do not switch modes casually if the server’s intended installation configuration depends on one of them.
Verify the ISO, then write the image again if needed
Check the ISO against the checksum and, where provided, signature instructions for that distribution and release. Ubuntu explains how to verify downloads using signed SHA256 checksums in its image verification guide. A download over TLS can still be checked for integrity.

If verification fails, download the image again from the distribution’s official source and verify it before writing it. If verification passes but the device still will not boot, recreate the USB using the distribution’s supported instructions. Ubuntu documents its Disks utility and Startup Disk Creator, Rufus on Windows, and dd for advanced Linux users in its USB creation guide. Writing an image erases the selected target; with dd, choosing the wrong device path can overwrite another disk.

Treat that as a context-specific option, not a universal recipe for older hardware or other distributions. Follow the instructions for the ISO and server in question.

If Secure Boot reports a signature or validation error
A Secure Boot error means that a boot component did not validate against the firmware’s configured trust chain. Ubuntu describes a chain in which firmware validates shim, shim validates GRUB, and the kernel is validated; failed validation stops the boot process. See Ubuntu’s Secure Boot explanation.
- Confirm that you are using an official installer image that supports Secure Boot for the server’s architecture and the distribution release.
- Check that firmware is using the expected trust keys and review the exact validation message. Behavior can vary by distribution, release, architecture, and firmware configuration.
- Do not disable Secure Boot as the automatic first fix. It changes a security control and may conceal whether the image or boot component is untrusted. If you use a temporary setting change as a controlled diagnostic test, restore the intended security setting afterward.
Ubuntu’s documentation explains the validation chain; it does not establish a generic instruction to disable Secure Boot on all servers.

If the installer starts but hangs or cannot find its files
If a bootloader menu appears, firmware has already begun executing boot software. Repeatedly changing boot order is unlikely to address a later-stage failure. Focus instead on the installer’s messages, the media, and whether the relevant storage or optical devices are recognized.
- Write down the exact error and the last visible boot line. If the installer provides a log view or shell, inspect its logs and
dmesgfor device-detection messages and read or driver errors. Debian’s installation guide recommends these checks for Debian media problems; use the equivalent instructions for the distribution you are installing. - Check whether the installer recognizes the device or controller it needs to read its files. If a controller or drive is not recognized, a required driver may be involved. The specific fix depends on the hardware and installer; there is no single kernel parameter that applies to every server hang.
- For an optical disc, check that firmware and hardware support booting from it, then investigate drive recognition and read errors. Debian also recommends checking the image and, where possible, trying another drive. Its examples include older optical hardware and should not be treated as USB troubleshooting guidance.
- If the installer’s files are missing or unreadable, verify the ISO and recreate the medium before pursuing unrelated boot settings.
If local USB or disc media is unavailable: consider PXE
For a server on a managed network, PXE can boot an installer without local USB or DVD media. It is not plug-and-play: network-side boot services and mode-appropriate boot files must be configured. Ubuntu’s amd64 netboot procedure uses DHCP/BOOTP and TFTP to provide a bootloader and configuration, then downloads the kernel, initrd, and ISO. UEFI uses an EFI executable signed for Secure Boot, while legacy mode uses PXELINUX.

Follow the distribution’s instructions and the server network’s configuration before changing DHCP or TFTP services. If you are not responsible for those services, involve the network administrator rather than altering shared boot infrastructure.
Match the next step to the evidence
| What you observe | Likely stage | Next useful check |
|---|---|---|
| USB or disc absent from one-time boot menu | Firmware visibility or configuration | Check connection, firmware recognition, boot-device enablement, and the menu key. |
| Device listed, but normal disk starts or “no bootable device” appears | Boot selection, boot mode, or media boot structure | Choose the intended UEFI or legacy entry; verify the ISO and recreate the media if appropriate. |
| Secure Boot or signature validation error | Boot-chain trust validation | Confirm image compatibility and inspect the firmware trust configuration. |
| Bootloader appears, then installer hangs or cannot find files | Installer, media-read, or device-recognition stage | Preserve the error and last boot line; inspect installer logs, dmesg, and device recognition. |
| Local media is unavailable or repeatedly fails | Alternative boot method may be needed | Assess PXE only if the required network services and mode-specific files can be provided. |
Official installation documentation describes these troubleshooting branches but does not publish comparative success rates for the remedies. The right next step depends on the observed failure stage, boot mode, medium, firmware visibility, Secure Boot message, and whether the installer bootloader has started.
