You can work with an Obsidian vault without making Claude Code your only option: launch an AI agent’s CLI from the vault folder, use an Obsidian plugin that embeds an agent interface, or connect an external agent to vault operations. The practical choice depends on where you want to work, how you want to supply note context, and what permissions and review steps you need—not on any verified ranking of which agent produces the best results.
Three ways to work with an AI agent and an Obsidian vault
“Local vault” describes where your Markdown files live; it does not, by itself, tell you whether note content will be sent to a cloud model. Keep the workflow and the model’s data handling as separate decisions.

Run a CLI agent from the vault folder
A terminal agent can treat the vault directory as its working project. OpenAI’s Codex CLI guide describes inspecting files, editing them, running local tools, and controlling permissions from a terminal. This suits users who want a direct view of the working directory and are comfortable with a command-line session.

Obsidian’s Any AI CLI plugin offers a different way to use this workflow: its listing describes a PTY-backed terminal in an Obsidian sidebar that starts in the active vault folder. Use an agent panel inside Obsidian
Plugins can keep an agent conversation close to the notes being edited. The Copilot listing describes support for OpenCode, Claude Code, and Codex, as well as multi-step work, tool use, file creation, and permissions. Grimoire describes a shared model picker, references to notes and folders, and MCP tools.
These are product-described capabilities, not a guarantee that every agent, feature, or platform works identically in every current version. Check the plugin’s latest listing for supported agents, desktop or mobile availability, authentication, and whether it manages a CLI or expects one to be installed.

Connect an external agent to vault operations
Nexus describes native chat plus ways for external agents to access vault functions, including MCP and a local CLI for some shell agents. This can fit a workflow centered on a separate agent client rather than an Obsidian panel or terminal session. Before connecting, check which files and actions the integration can reach, what permissions it needs, and whether your client is supported.

- Interface: Decide whether you prefer a terminal, an Obsidian panel, or an external client.
- Context: Check whether the workflow uses the working directory, lets you point to the active note or folder, or supports explicit references.
- Permissions: Understand what the agent can read, change, or run, and how you can constrain those actions.
- Agent and provider: Confirm which agents and model providers are supported and what login or key each requires.
- Continuity and recovery: Consider how sessions persist and how you will inspect, undo, or restore file changes.
Keep vault access, model privacy, and file recovery distinct
A CLI or plugin may run on your computer while still sending the prompt and selected note content to a cloud model. Copilot’s listing describes provider keys, local models, and agent-specific logins; Grimoire describes a local CLI runtime and no hosted backend. Those descriptions do not independently establish the data path for every model request. Before sending sensitive notes, check the current privacy and retention terms of the provider and the plugin or integration you use.
Limit access to the vault and files the task requires, review proposed changes before relying on them, and keep a recoverable version of your notes. OpenAI’s Codex guide recommends Git checkpoints around a task. In a vault tracked with Git, a checkpoint gives you a way to inspect changes and restore files if an edit is unwanted.

Give the agent vault-specific instructions
A plain Markdown instruction file can explain the vault’s conventions, such as how you name notes or organize folders. Anthropic documents that CLAUDE.md is automatically read at session start for the relevant directory context. Use it to provide concise, durable guidance rather than assuming the agent already understands your structure. This behavior is specific to Claude Code; check the documentation for other agents before relying on an equivalent file or loading rule.

What to verify before installing a plugin
Obsidian plugins and their compatibility can change. At retrieval on October 4, 2026, the Copilot community listing showed version 4.0.13, an update two days earlier, compatibility with Obsidian 1.11.4 or later, and desktop/mobile platform labels. Treat those as a dated snapshot, not a promise about the current release; confirm the live Copilot listing and setup instructions before choosing it.
For any option, verify the current supported agents and platforms, installation and authentication requirements, permission settings, and whether the setup sends note content to a model provider. Pricing and comparative task quality are not established by the product descriptions cited here, so they are not a sound basis for ranking these workflows.
