Most Modern Warfare 4 PC problems have one of four causes: hardware or security requirements that are not met, a driver or background-software conflict, shader delivery and compilation, or network instability. Start by verifying the platform requirements and free SSD space, then establish a clean launch with current drivers. Only after that should you tune graphics. Use the built-in benchmark to separate CPU/GPU frame-time problems from online latency, and submit an Activision crash or bug report when the documented fixes do not resolve the fault.
The order matters. Changing ten graphics options at once can hide the original cause, while reinstalling the game cannot repair a congested Wi-Fi link or disabled Secure Boot. Work from the least ambiguous checks to the most specific ones, record what changes, and restore one setting at a time if a test makes the game worse.

1. Verify that your PC meets the current requirements
Do this before changing graphics settings. Activision’s 2026 requirements specify Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit), DirectX 12, an Intel or AMD processor with AVX support, TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, and an SSD. At launch, the game requires 115 GB of free SSD capacity; mandatory updates can require additional working space. Installing to a hard disk or leaving only a few gigabytes free can turn an apparently random crash or shader stall into a storage problem.
| Requirement | Minimum tier | Recommended multiplayer tier | Ray-tracing tier |
|---|---|---|---|
| Memory | 8 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM | 32 GB RAM |
| Graphics hardware | Radeon RX 470; GeForce GTX 970 or GTX 1060; or Intel Arc A580 with 3 GB video memory | Radeon RX 6600 XT; GeForce RTX 3060 Ti; or Intel Arc B580 with 8 GB video memory | Not specified on the cited requirements page |
| Performance target | Not specified | 90 FPS on High settings | Not specified |
| Storage | SSD with 115 GB free at launch | SSD with 115 GB free at launch | SSD with 115 GB free at launch |
The recommended tier is a 90-FPS target, not a guarantee for every map, patch, monitor, or background workload. Check free space again before a large update, because the launch figure does not promise that 115 GB will remain sufficient indefinitely. A 1 TB NVMe SSD gives considerably more working room for the game, updates, temporary files, and other applications than a nearly full system drive.

Check Windows, DirectX, TPM, and Secure Boot
- Install all pending Windows updates and restart.
- Confirm that DirectX 12 is available on the installed Windows edition.
- In your motherboard firmware and Windows security information, verify TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot. If either is disabled, enable it according to your motherboard manufacturer’s instructions before launching.
- Confirm that the processor is an Intel or AMD model with AVX support. The requirement is an instruction-set capability, not simply a processor brand.
- Check that the game is actually installed on the SSD you measured. A system may have 115 GB free on one drive while the game, launcher, or shader data uses another drive with less capacity.
If a machine is below the minimum GPU or memory tier, crashes and severe hitching may not be fixable with a preset. The minimum list includes Radeon RX 470, GeForce GTX 970 or GTX 1060, and Intel Arc A580 with 3 GB of video memory. The recommended multiplayer tier lists Radeon RX 6600 XT, GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, and Intel Arc B580 with 8 GB of video memory, paired with 16 GB of RAM. The ray-tracing tier lists 32 GB of RAM, so enabling that feature is a materially different memory workload.
2. Classify the failure before you troubleshoot it
Crashes
A crash is a return to the desktop, a frozen process that closes, or a launch failure. Activision says PC crashes most often occur while starting the game or while playing public Multiplayer matches. If the game fails before the main menu, concentrate on requirements, drivers, security settings, and software conflicts. If it fails only in a particular mode or after a patch, check the current known-issues list before repeatedly reinstalling.
Render stutter
Render stutter is uneven frame delivery: the picture hitches even though your character is not being moved by the server. It can appear in menus, Campaign, or a local scene and often changes when you lower a GPU-heavy setting. The benchmark’s average FPS, CPU load, GPU load, and input-latency readings help confirm this class of problem. A low average FPS and consistently busy GPU suggest a quality or resolution limit; a reasonable average with sharp pauses suggests frame pacing, shader work, a driver interaction, or a background task.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsNetwork stutter
Activision describes network-related symptoms as rubber-banding, delayed hit markers, latency, packet loss, and movement that freezes and then skips ahead. These can occur while the frame rate looks normal. A graphics preset cannot repair a congested Wi-Fi link or a long route to the game server. If Campaign is smooth but public Multiplayer repeatedly rewinds your position or registers hits late, test the connection before lowering textures or shadows.

Shader compilation or delivery stalls
Shader work happens when the game prepares graphics programs for your driver and hardware. A shader screen that takes a long time, restarts after every driver change, or causes hitches during the first match is a different problem from packet loss. Treat it separately and allow the delivery process to complete before judging normal performance. Driver changes can legitimately require new shader preparation; repeating the process after every launch is a sign to check storage, delivery support, current patches, and the driver rather than simply waiting forever.
3. Establish a clean crash-free baseline
- Update Windows first. Apply pending updates, restart the PC, and launch the game once before adding other changes. This removes partially applied system updates from the troubleshooting equation.
- Install the driver versions listed by Activision. The requirements page checked October 19, 2026 lists AMD 26.7.1, NVIDIA 616.56, and Intel 32.0.101.8974. The NVIDIA entry is identified as the Advanced Shader Delivery-compatible driver announced for October 21, so its availability may depend on the date and distribution channel. A driver released after these versions can also be appropriate, but compare its release notes if a problem begins immediately after updating.
- Restart after the driver installation. Do not test the game while Windows is still completing a driver or shader-related task. A second restart also helps ensure that the new display driver is the one actually loaded.
- Close overlays and capture software. Exit chat overlays, performance monitors, screen recorders, streaming tools, and GPU overlays. Disable them for the first clean test rather than merely hiding their windows. Re-enable one utility at a time only after a stable session.
- Close input-remapping utilities. Controller mappers, macro tools, virtual-device drivers, and keyboard utilities can conflict with a game that otherwise launches normally. Disconnecting an unused virtual controller can be a useful test.
- Stop unnecessary background applications. Pause launchers, browsers with heavy tabs, cloud synchronization, and other programs that compete for CPU, memory, disk bandwidth, or GPU time. Resume them one at a time after the game is stable.
- Check temperatures and airflow. A laptop on a soft surface or a desktop with blocked vents can lose clock speed or shut down under load. Test with clear airflow, a working fan profile, and a cool chassis. Heat-related instability should not be “fixed” by lowering every visual setting while leaving the cooling problem in place.
- Remove persistent third-party conflicts methodically. If the game works after closing software, reopen one utility at a time until the conflict returns. Keep the conflicting utility disabled while playing and report the combination to its developer if necessary.
- Submit a PC Crash Report when the clean baseline still fails. Include when the crash occurs (launch, menu, Campaign, or public Multiplayer), the last driver change, and whether overlays were disabled. This gives Activision information that a generic reinstall does not.
Do not assume that a crash immediately after an update proves the update is defective. First repeat the test with the current driver, a restart, closed overlays, and enough disk space. If only one map or mode fails, preserve that detail; a narrowly reproducible report is more useful than a claim that the entire game is broken.
4. Handle shader compilation and Advanced Shader Delivery
Call of Duty Staff describes Advanced Shader Delivery (ASD) as delivering precompiled shaders ahead of time so supported PC platforms can launch MW4 faster. The feature changes the delivery path; it is not a promise that every driver, cache, patch, or hardware combination will be hitch-free.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Use ASD on a supported PC platform
- Install the Xbox PC app if you want to use Advanced Shader Delivery where it is supported.
- Keep the game on the SSD and preserve free working space beyond the 115 GB launch requirement.
- Use an ASD-compatible driver when the driver listing and release date make it available for your platform.
- Start the game after the driver update and allow shader preparation to finish. Avoid killing the process or powering off the PC during this stage.
- Launch a short test session. A first-run hitch can be expected while caches are created; repeated stalls after every launch indicate that the delivery, driver, cache, or a current patch needs further investigation.
If the shader screen is stuck or keeps repeating
- Restart Windows after completing the driver update, then retry once with overlays and recording tools closed.
- Confirm that the SSD still has working space for updates and temporary shader data, not merely the installed game size.
- Check Activision’s known-issues page for a shader or platform-specific problem introduced by the latest patch.
- If the process never advances or causes a crash, submit the PC Crash Report and describe the exact shader stage, driver version, and platform. Do not claim that ASD is a universal cure; Activision’s statement concerns faster startup through precompiled delivery.
A shader wait is not a useful time trial unless the conditions are comparable. Record whether you changed the GPU driver, moved the installation, installed an update, or switched PC platforms. Those events can change the required shader set. If the game completes preparation once and then stutters only in a new area, run the benchmark and a repeat session before concluding that compilation is permanently stuck.

5. Use the built-in benchmark before changing quality settings
MW4 includes a benchmark that reports average FPS, CPU, GPU, ping, and input latency and suggests settings. It also exposes more than 800 customization options, so copying a single “best” preset can leave performance or image quality on the table.
- Run the benchmark from the game’s PC graphics or performance area before making changes.
- Record the average FPS and the CPU, GPU, ping, and input-latency readings. Repeat the test after each meaningful change.
- Change one class of setting at a time: ray tracing, resolution or upscaling, frame generation, texture quality, shadows, or effects.
- Compare both the numerical result and the feel of frame pacing. A higher average FPS is not automatically better if input latency rises or hitching remains.
- Keep the setting that meets your monitor’s target with acceptable clarity and latency. The recommended hardware tier targets 90 FPS on High, but a 60-Hz display, a high-refresh display, and a competitive low-latency setup have different priorities.
Read the benchmark’s pattern
- GPU-limited result: Lower ray tracing, resolution, shadows, or effects first. Use upscaling if its image quality is acceptable.
- CPU-limited result: Reduce CPU-heavy simulation or view-distance options where available, close background programs, and check that the processor is not throttling from heat.
- High average FPS with high input latency: Test frame generation and latency-related options separately; do not judge responsiveness from FPS alone.
- Normal CPU/GPU readings but online skips: Move to the network checks below instead of lowering visual quality.
- Large run-to-run variation: Repeat the benchmark after a restart with the same scene and background applications. Variation can indicate a background task, thermal limit, or shader activity rather than a setting that is intrinsically too high.
Use the benchmark as a comparison tool, not as a promise of match performance. It reports averages and useful indicators, while an actual Multiplayer match can add network events and a different workload. Keep a simple note of the date, driver, preset, and result so a later patch can be compared fairly.
6. Separate Wi-Fi or server latency from graphics problems
Network symptoms include rubber-banding, hit-marker delay, packet loss, and the “freeze, then skip ahead” movement described by Activision. They can be intermittent and may affect only public Multiplayer while Campaign remains smooth.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Test wired Ethernet. Connect the PC directly to the router with Ethernet for a session. If the skips disappear, Wi-Fi interference, signal strength, or airtime contention is a likely contributor. A Cat6 cable is a straightforward test when the router is nearby.
- Stop competing traffic. Pause household video streams, game downloads, cloud backups, and large file transfers while testing. Repeat at the time of day when the problem normally occurs.
- Enable router QoS if available. Give the gaming PC or console traffic appropriate priority, while remembering that QoS cannot reduce the physical distance to a server or repair an ISP fault.
- Compare times and modes. If the problem appears only at busy hours or only on one server region, record that pattern for your ISP or Activision report.
Ping depends heavily on your ISP and geographic distance to the server. A lower graphics setting may improve frame delivery but cannot correct high latency or packet loss on the route between your home and the game service. Conversely, a perfect Ethernet connection cannot prevent a GPU from stuttering because of a shader or thermal problem. Diagnose the symptom that changes when you change the relevant condition.

7. Check known issues and escalate with useful evidence
Review Activision’s running known-issues page after every substantial update. On October 16, 2026, it listed an Xbox-on-PC Campaign launch-button issue as addressed and directed players with unlisted problems to the bug-report form. A resolved item can still help you recognize a similar symptom, but an issue marked addressed is not evidence that every PC installation is fixed.
What to include in a report
- Windows edition and whether DirectX 12, TPM 2.0, and Secure Boot are enabled.
- CPU, GPU, system memory, SSD free space, and whether the game is installed on an SSD.
- GPU driver version, including whether you used AMD 26.7.1, NVIDIA 616.56, Intel 32.0.101.8974, or a newer release.
- The exact trigger: launch, shader preparation, Campaign, public Multiplayer, a specific map, or a graphics change.
- Whether overlays, capture tools, input remappers, and other background applications were closed.
- Benchmark readings for average FPS, CPU, GPU, ping, and input latency when the issue is stutter rather than a crash.
- Whether Ethernet changed the symptom, and whether the problem occurs at particular times or only in a particular mode.
Official material does not establish a universal crash rate, an average shader-compilation duration, or an FPS result that every PC will achieve. Treat driver support, known issues, and storage figures as patch-sensitive and re-check the current Activision pages when an update changes the behavior.
A practical order of operations
- Confirm Windows 10/11 64-bit, DirectX 12, AVX, TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, the SSD installation, and at least 115 GB free plus update headroom.
- Update Windows and the GPU driver, restart, and test with overlays, capture tools, input remappers, and unnecessary background applications closed.
- Check cooling and remove any utility that reproduces the crash.
- Use Advanced Shader Delivery through a supported PC platform and the Xbox PC app, allowing shader preparation to complete.
- Run the benchmark and tune one graphics category at a time.
- If symptoms are rubber-banding, delayed hit markers, or skipped movement, test Ethernet, stop competing traffic, and configure QoS rather than lowering image quality.
- Check known issues, then submit the appropriate PC Crash Report or bug report with your configuration and measurements.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Modern Warfare 4 keep crashing on PC?
First verify Windows 10 or 11 64-bit, DirectX 12, AVX, TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, an SSD, and enough free space. Then update Windows and the GPU driver, restart, close overlays, capture tools, input remappers, and unnecessary background applications, and check temperatures. If the crash remains, send Activision a PC Crash Report with the exact trigger and configuration.
How much storage does MW4 need?
Activision lists 115 GB of free SSD space at launch. Mandatory updates and temporary shader data may need additional working space, so do not treat 115 GB as a permanent maximum.

What PC specs target 90 FPS?
The recommended multiplayer tier targets 90 FPS on High settings with a Radeon RX 6600 XT, GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, or Intel Arc B580 with 8 GB of video memory, plus 16 GB of RAM. It is a target, not a guarantee for every map, patch, monitor, or background workload.
Why is shader compilation stuck or stuttering?
Restart after the driver update, confirm SSD working space, close overlays and recording tools, and allow shader preparation to finish. On a supported platform, Advanced Shader Delivery can provide precompiled shaders ahead of time; the Xbox PC app is required where ASD is supported. Repeated stalls or crashes should be reported to Activision with the stage and driver version.
Is my lag caused by Wi-Fi or the graphics engine?
Rubber-banding, delayed hit markers, packet loss, and movement that freezes then skips ahead point to network conditions. Test wired Ethernet, stop competing traffic, and use router QoS if available. Hitches in Campaign or the benchmark with normal network behavior are more consistent with rendering, shaders, drivers, or thermals.
Should I lower every graphics setting to stop stutter?
No. Run the built-in benchmark and change one category at a time. It reports average FPS, CPU, GPU, ping, and input latency. Lower GPU-heavy settings when the GPU is limiting; address cooling or background CPU load when the processor is limiting.
Which driver versions does Activision list?
The requirements page checked October 19, 2026 lists AMD 26.7.1, NVIDIA 616.56, and Intel 32.0.101.8974. NVIDIA 616.56 is identified with Advanced Shader Delivery compatibility announced for October 21, so availability can depend on date and distribution channel.
Where should I report an unresolved problem?
Use the PC Crash Report for persistent crashes and Activision’s bug-report form for problems not listed on the running known-issues page. Include your hardware, Windows and driver versions, free SSD space, trigger, disabled software, and benchmark or network observations.
The Bottom Line
Start with requirements and storage, then update Windows and the driver and test a clean launch with overlays and background utilities closed. Treat shader preparation as its own stage and use Advanced Shader Delivery where supported, but do not expect it to cure every driver or patch issue. Use the benchmark to tune one setting class at a time, and use Ethernet and QoS tests for rubber-banding or packet loss. If the problem survives those checks, send Activision a detailed crash or bug report rather than repeating an unfocused reinstall.
