If all streams buffer, address your connection, router, ISP, or device. If one channel is affected while others play normally, the broadcaster’s bitrate, encoder, resolution, frame rate, or upload path may be at fault. Lowering playback quality, refreshing the player, removing browser conflicts, and correcting decoding settings solve many viewer-side problems.
Start with a two-minute diagnosis
Before changing several settings at once, run two controlled tests. First, open a different livestream on the same service. Second, try the original stream on another network, such as cellular data or a different Wi-Fi connection. These tests show whether the failure is local to your connection or device, or specific to one stream.

- Every stream and service buffers: suspect unstable Wi-Fi, congestion, router or ISP trouble, or insufficient sustained download capacity.
- Only one channel is bad: the broadcaster’s bitrate, encoder, keyframe, resolution, frame rate, or upload path may be responsible.
- The stream works on another device: focus on the original browser, extensions, GPU decoding, hardware acceleration, or device load.
- Audio continues while video freezes: investigate decoding, hardware acceleration, extensions, and system load.
- There is a steady delay but no pauses: the delay may be intentional live-stream latency rather than a fault.
Refresh the page or restart the app or player before making deeper changes. This clears a stalled playback session without changing your account or stream settings.
Fix the internet connection first
Switch networks to identify the cause
Temporarily switch from Wi-Fi to cellular data, or from cellular to a reliable Wi-Fi network. If playback becomes stable immediately, the original connection is the likely bottleneck. A test on another Wi-Fi network is useful when cellular data is limited or expensive.

Streaming needs sustained, stable delivery, not merely a high speed-test peak. Short interruptions, interference, congestion, or packet loss can empty the player’s buffer even when a speed test reports a large headline number.
Prefer Ethernet for a fixed viewing setup
For a television, desktop, or laptop near the router, connect with Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi. A wired connection removes radio interference and much of the variability caused by distance, walls, and competing wireless devices. Cloudflare’s buffering guidance specifically recommends trying Ethernet when possible.
Restart the modem and router
- Close the livestream and unplug the modem and router.
- Wait briefly, then power the modem back on and allow it to reconnect to the ISP.
- Power the router back on, wait for Wi-Fi or Ethernet to return, and retry the stream.
- Test more than one channel before deciding whether the restart worked.
If several services still buffer after a restart and an Ethernet or alternate-network test, contact the ISP. Explain that the connection cannot sustain live video and provide the times of the interruptions. The ISP can check line quality, congestion, or an outage; changing browser settings will not repair an inadequate access connection.

Reduce the player’s bandwidth demand
Set the player to Auto first. Automatic quality lets the service choose a lower rendition when available. If pauses continue, select a lower resolution manually for a few minutes. A stable lower-quality picture is preferable to repeatedly stopping a higher-quality stream.

Twitch’s current published viewing guidance gives these approximate sustained download ranges:

| 480p | 1.1–3 Mbps | A modest step up when 360p is too soft. |
| 720p60 | 3–6 Mbps | Requires more sustained capacity because of 60 frames per second. |
| 1080p60 | 7–12 Mbps | Needs a substantially steadier connection than 720p. |
| 1440p60 | 9–18 Mbps or higher | High demand; use only when the connection remains stable. |
These are recommendations, not guarantees. Wi-Fi interference, congestion, routing, and brief drops can still cause buffering below the listed figures. Conversely, a fast connection can stutter if the route or device is unstable. Lower quality is a diagnostic step as well as a viewing choice: if 360p or 480p plays continuously while 1080p does not, sustained capacity or congestion is more likely than a broken video player.
Refresh, update, and restart in the right order
- Reload the page or restart the app. This creates a new playback session and often clears a temporary manifest or segment failure.
- Restart the device. A reboot releases memory and resets stalled network or graphics processes.
- Update the browser or streaming app. Older playback components can be incompatible with current video delivery or decoding.
- Try the service’s supported app or website. YouTube recommends changing the internet connection and trying the YouTube app or youtube.com when playback is faulty.
- Test another browser or device. If only one environment fails, keep the network unchanged and troubleshoot that environment rather than the entire home network.
Do not make several changes between tests. Changing one variable at a time makes it clear which action fixed the problem.

Use a private or incognito window
Open the stream in a private window and sign in only if necessary. This usually starts without many stored site settings and extensions. If the stream works there, the normal browser profile is interfering.

Disable extensions selectively
Ad blockers, privacy tools, script controls, video enhancers, and overlay extensions can interrupt media requests or alter the player. Disable them temporarily, reload the stream, and re-enable them one at a time to identify the conflict. Twitch lists extensions among causes of unsupported playback and network error 2000.
Clear site data only when needed
If a private window works but the normal profile does not, clear cookies and cached data for the affected streaming site, then sign in again. This is more targeted than deleting all browser data and avoids disrupting unrelated sites.
Fix Twitch error 2000 and error 3000
Error 2000: network or browser interference
Twitch error 2000 commonly appears when the player cannot obtain or continue the stream. Start with the connection tests, then reload the page and try a private window. Disable extensions, especially content blockers, and test another browser. If every channel fails on every device, return to the router, ISP, and network checks rather than repeatedly reinstalling the browser.
Error 3000: decoding and browser compatibility
Error 3000 is associated with video decoding problems. Update the browser and the graphics-processing-unit (GPU) driver, then toggle hardware acceleration off and restart the browser. Hardware acceleration normally moves video decoding to the GPU; on some browser, driver, or GPU combinations, that path can produce a frozen picture, stutter, or audio-video mismatch.

- Install the latest stable update offered by your browser.
- Update the device’s GPU driver using the computer manufacturer or GPU maker’s normal update process.
- In the browser’s system or performance settings, turn hardware acceleration off.
- Fully quit and reopen the browser; merely closing a tab may not restart the graphics process.
- Retry the same stream, then compare another channel.
If disabling acceleration makes playback worse, turn it back on and use another browser or device. The goal is a stable decoding path, not a particular setting.
When audio plays but video freezes
This symptom usually means the audio pipeline is still receiving data while video decoding or rendering is falling behind. Apply the error-3000 sequence: update the browser and GPU driver, test with hardware acceleration toggled, disable extensions, and reduce resolution. Close demanding applications and overlays while testing so the device has enough processing headroom.
On a phone or tablet, restart the device and try the official streaming app after closing other video or game apps. On a computer, compare a private window and a second browser. If audio and video remain unsynchronized only on one stream, the broadcaster’s encoder or upload path may be producing a stream that your player cannot decode cleanly.

Correct audio-video delay and drift
Distinguish latency from a fault
Live video is not always instantaneous. Latency is the intentional delay between capture and display. A stream can have a steady several-second delay with smooth playback; that is different from buffering, where playback pauses while data catches up. YouTube describes a trade-off between latency and buffer margin: lower latency uses less read-ahead, so viewers may experience more buffering.

Recover after a stall
- Refresh the player or restart the app.
- Watch another channel to see whether the timing problem follows the service or the original stream.
- Try another browser or device and disable extensions.
- Reduce quality if the stream has recently stalled.
If the drift returns only on one channel while other channels remain synchronized, report the example to the streamer. A broadcaster-side encoder, keyframe, frame-rate, resolution, or upload problem can create persistent sync errors that a viewer cannot repair.

YouTube’s modes trade responsiveness for a larger safety buffer:

If a low- or ultra-low-latency stream repeatedly pauses, the viewer cannot increase its buffer directly. Lower playback quality, stabilize the connection, or accept the stream’s normal latency where the broadcaster provides that option.
Twitch
Open the player’s Settings, choose Advanced, and disable Low Latency when quality of service is poor. This can add delay but gives playback more room to absorb short network variations. If the option is unavailable or the stream remains unstable, use Auto or a lower quality and test another channel.
Use the symptom to choose the next test

What to do when only one livestream is affected
Do not rebuild your home network immediately. First open several other channels on the same service. If they play normally, the viewer connection is probably adequate for at least some streams. Twitch notes that a specific broadcaster’s bitrate, encoder, keyframe, resolution, frame rate, or upload settings can affect viewers. A stream may therefore fail on one device or network while other channels remain fine.
Refresh once, try a lower quality, and test another browser or device. If the same channel remains broken across multiple devices and networks, capture the channel name, approximate time, error message, and whether audio or video failed, then send those details to the broadcaster or platform support. There is no viewer-side setting that can repair a defective source encode.
What not to do
- Do not assume a speed test proves stability. A brief peak does not represent sustained delivery or packet loss during the stream.
- Do not force maximum resolution. Twitch’s guidance is a range, and higher quality is useful only when the connection remains stable.
- Do not leave low latency enabled during severe instability. Smaller buffers make interruptions more visible.
- Do not change router, browser, and GPU settings simultaneously. You will not know which change mattered.
- Do not blame the device when every device and service fails. That pattern points toward the network or ISP.
A practical recovery checklist
- Refresh the stream or restart the app.
- Open another channel on the same service.
- Switch to another network or use Ethernet.
- Restart the modem and router.
- Set quality to Auto, then lower it temporarily.
- Update the browser or app and restart the device.
- Try a private window, disable extensions, and test another browser.
- For video freezing or error 3000, update the GPU driver and toggle hardware acceleration.
- For Twitch, open Settings > Advanced and disable Low Latency when service quality is poor.
- If only one channel remains affected, treat it as a possible broadcaster-side problem and report precise symptoms.
- If all services remain unstable after network tests, contact the ISP.
Why a stable stream is the right target
Higher resolution and lower latency are not automatically better if they consume the buffer margin. Twitch’s guidance emphasizes that a stable stream is preferable to pushing for higher video quality that causes dropped frames or tests the limits of the internet connection. Start with the smallest change that distinguishes network, player, decoding, latency, and broadcaster causes; then restore quality or lower latency only after playback remains continuous.
