Start by separating the symptom: if games are sharp in handheld mode but blurry on your TV, troubleshoot the dock, HDMI path, TV input, and display settings. If the blur or shimmer appears on the console screen too, update and restart the system, update the affected game, and determine whether one title or every title is affected. Switch 2 can output up to 4K in supported games, but no console setting can remove rendering limitations built into a particular game.
First identify where the blur occurs
Do not change several settings at once. Undock the console and launch the same scene that looked wrong on the TV. The result tells you which branch to follow.

| What you see | Most likely area to investigate | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| Handheld image is clear; TV image is blurry or shimmering | Dock, HDMI cable, TV input, TV processing, or an incompatible signal setting | Reset the dock connection, use a direct HDMI connection, then check TV and Switch 2 display settings |
| Handheld and TV images are wrong in one game only | The title’s update, game-card installation, or its own rendering settings | Update the game; reseat a physical card; check whether other games are normal |
| Every game is distorted in handheld mode | Console software or hardware | Install the system update, restart, and request Nintendo service if the problem remains |
| Only fine details crawl or sparkle while the overall image is sharp | Title-specific reconstruction, anti-aliasing, or internal-resolution behavior | Check for a game patch or an in-game graphics mode; a system-wide setting may not exist |
Keep the comparison fair: use the same game, camera angle, brightness, and distance from the screen. A scene with foliage, fences, thin cables, or distant text makes shimmer easier to notice than a dark interior.

Blur makes the whole image or text look soft, while shimmer is usually movement in fine lines, foliage, fences, or distant geometry as the camera moves. A TV scaling mismatch can soften everything; a game’s anti-aliasing or reconstruction can leave the large shapes sharp while small details sparkle. Identifying which description fits prevents you from chasing HDR or cable settings when the behavior is built into one title.

Update Switch 2, restart it, and update the game
Nintendo’s troubleshooting sequence starts with the console update and a restart. This is the least disruptive fix and should happen before changing resolution, HDR, or refresh-rate options.
- Open System Settings > System > System Update and install any available update.
- Hold the console’s POWER button for at least three seconds. Select Power Options, then Restart.
- If only one downloaded or card-based game is affected, highlight it on the HOME menu, press + or −, choose Software Update, and select Via the Internet.
- For a physical game, turn the console off before removing and firmly reseating the card, then check for the same software update.
If every other title is clear after the update, the remaining fault is probably specific to that game rather than the display hardware. Follow the publisher’s support instructions for a one-title rendering problem. If the distortion survives updates in every title, continue with the hardware and signal checks below.
A restart matters even when the console appears to be working normally. It reloads the display negotiation and software state after an update. Do not treat a game update as a substitute for the system update: install both when available, then test again before changing several display variables.
Repair a blurry or shimmering docked image
A docked picture travels through several components before it reaches the panel. Isolate that chain by removing adapters and receivers, using known-good ports, and changing one item at a time.
Reset the dock’s power state
- Unplug the AC adapter from both the wall outlet and the dock.
- Wait at least 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the official Switch 2 AC adapter directly to a wall outlet, not through a power strip or surge protector while testing.
This reset clears a bad negotiation between the dock and TV without deleting games or save data. Keep the console undocked while reconnecting, then place it back in the dock after the adapter and HDMI cable are connected.
Use a direct HDMI path
Connect HDMI directly from the Switch 2 dock to the TV. Temporarily remove a soundbar, AV receiver, HDMI switch, DVI adapter, capture device, or other intermediary. Those devices can alter the negotiated resolution, color range, HDR mode, or refresh rate.
Nintendo says Switch 2 is intended to be used with an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Use that type for the test, connect it to another HDMI input on the TV, and select that input manually. If the second port is clear, the original port or its input processing is the likely cause.

Enable the TV’s game picture mode
Turn on the television’s Game Mode (the exact label varies by manufacturer). This normally reduces processing that can soften fine detail or add motion artifacts. Do not use a store-demo, cinema, or motion-interpolation preset while diagnosing a static graphics problem. After the picture is stable, you can compare other presets, but keep Game Mode enabled while judging latency and shimmer.
Cross-test the components
- Try another Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.
- Try another HDMI port on the same TV.
- Connect the dock to another HDMI-compatible TV or monitor.
- If available, test another Switch 2 dock with the same console and cable.
Document which combination works. If another dock produces a normal picture, Nintendo says the original dock needs service. If the image remains wrong on multiple HDMI-compatible TVs with known-good cables and ports, Nintendo asks you to send the console for inspection and include the dock and HDMI cable.
Change only one component per test and write down the result. Replacing a cable, port, and TV simultaneously can make the picture look better without revealing which part failed. A known-good cable is a relatively low-cost first replacement; replacing a dock or requesting service is less reversible and may involve service terms or charges.
Check Switch 2 display settings
Open System Settings > Display while the console is docked. Make one change, return to the game, and compare the same scene before making another change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTV Resolution
TV Resolution offers Automatic, 720p, 1080p, 1440p, and 2160p (4K). Start with Automatic so the console and TV negotiate a supported mode. If Automatic produces a soft or unstable image, test 1080p and 1440p individually; these controlled tests reveal whether the TV or an intermediary is mishandling a higher mode.
Nintendo states that Switch 2 supports an image resolution of up to 4K in supported games when connected to a compatible TV. That is a game-and-display capability, not a guarantee that every title renders internally at 4K. Nintendo describes 4K as four times the image resolution of 1080p. A 4K television therefore cannot automatically add detail that a game does not render.
Video Output Information
Open Video Output Information to confirm what the console is actually sending. Compare the reported resolution and refresh rate with the TV’s information panel. If the TV reports a lower mode than the one selected, the cable, port, receiver, or TV input may be limiting the signal.

RGB Range
RGB Range controls the black-to-white signal range. Match the setting to the TV’s expected range. A mismatch usually looks washed out or crushed rather than simply low-resolution, but it can make edges and shadow detail appear worse. If you are unsure, return to the default or Automatic behavior, then compare a game with both bright highlights and dark areas.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Adjust Screen Size
Use Adjust Screen Size so the image fits the panel exactly. An incorrectly sized image can be rescaled by the TV, making text and thin lines look softer. Complete the on-screen adjustment with the TV’s overscan or picture-size control set to its neutral, full-pixel option where available.
120Hz Output, ALLM, VRR, and HDR
- 120Hz Output is available only at 1080p or 1440p. It is not a 4K/120 mode.
- Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) lets a compatible TV switch to its low-latency preset.
- VRR Output can smooth variable frame rates when the game and display both support it. Nintendo made TV-Mode VRR available through a system update released September 10, 2026; compatibility still varies by game and display.
- HDR should be enabled only when the TV and the game support it correctly. If colors look gray, overly dark, or posterized, temporarily compare with HDR disabled to identify whether the issue is HDR mapping rather than resolution.
Nintendo’s 2026 specifications set a 60-frames-per-second limit for 4K output. The highest possible frame rate is 120 frames per second in compatible games, and VRR is likewise conditional on the title and display. Selecting 120Hz therefore cannot make a game that renders at a lower frame rate produce extra detail. If a TV switches out of Game Mode when HDR or ALLM is enabled, compare with those features off rather than assuming the panel is defective.
Make compatible original Switch games sharper in handheld mode
If an original Switch game looks soft on the Switch 2 screen, check Handheld Mode Boost. The feature applies only to compatible original Switch software; it is not a universal enhancement for native Switch 2 titles.
- Open System Settings > System > Nintendo Switch Software Handling.
- Toggle Handheld Mode Boost on.
- Close and relaunch the affected original Switch game, then compare the same scene.
Handheld Mode Boost runs compatible software as if it were in TV Mode, which can raise its rendered resolution. Support is title-specific, so the option may have no visible effect in an unsupported game. It is intended as a per-system handling option, not a guarantee of a fixed resolution for every scene.
Trade-offs to check before leaving it enabled
- Higher rendering work can increase power consumption and reduce battery life.
- Attached Joy-Con 2 controllers may be treated as a Pro Controller.
- Touchscreen behavior can be disabled.
- Games that depend on motion controls or touch input can behave incorrectly or become unplayable.
Turn the feature off for a title that loses touch or motion functionality. Use it selectively rather than assuming that a sharper image is worth the control changes in every game. If battery life or controller behavior changes only after enabling the boost, that is an expected trade-off rather than evidence of a failing screen.
When shimmering is a game-rendering limitation
Shimmering is not always a faulty cable. A title may reconstruct a lower internal resolution, use a particular anti-aliasing method, or resolve fine geometry differently at a distance. The cited Nintendo display procedures do not promise a universal switch that removes those characteristics.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Look in the game’s own options for a graphics, resolution, performance, anti-aliasing, or image-quality mode. If the shimmer is confined to one title and remains after the title update, report it to that game’s publisher. Describe the mode (handheld or docked), display resolution, refresh-rate setting, and a reproducible location in the game so support can distinguish a known rendering issue from a hardware fault.
Do not judge a title only from a paused screen. Move the camera through the same foliage, railings, or distant text that revealed the problem. If the pattern follows the game across different TVs and cables but other games remain clear, settings changes are unlikely to remove it. Conversely, if every title shows the same softness only through one HDMI path, treat it as a signal or scaling issue first.

Choose the least disruptive fix first
| Remedy | Targets | Cost and reversibility | Important limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| System update and restart | Console-wide software glitches | Free; fully reversible | Does not change a game’s internal rendering |
| Game update or card reseat | One title, especially a physical card | Free; reversible | Useful only when the title or card is involved |
| Dock power reset and direct HDMI | TV-only blur, handshake failures, and signal processing | Free; reversible | Requires temporarily removing receivers, switches, and adapters |
| Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, alternate port, or alternate TV | Bandwidth, cable, and input faults | Usually a hardware swap; reversible | Use a known-good cable and record which component changes the result |
| Resolution, RGB, screen-size, HDR, 120Hz, ALLM, or VRR changes | Incorrect output mode, scaling, color, or refresh behavior | Free; reversible | Supported modes vary by TV and game; 4K is limited to 60 fps |
| Handheld Mode Boost | Compatible original Switch software in handheld mode | Free; reversible | Can increase power use and disable or alter touch and motion controls |
| Nintendo service | Persistent console or dock hardware faults | Service terms determine any cost; not an instant setting change | Use after cross-testing cables, ports, TVs, and docks |
Start with free, reversible actions: updates, restart, direct connections, and display-mode comparisons. Buy a cable only when a known-good replacement changes the result. Do not purchase a new television to solve a symptom that disappears when a receiver or HDMI port is removed. Hardware replacement becomes reasonable only after cross-testing identifies the failing component.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Know when to stop changing settings
- If the problem appears only on the TV, complete the direct-cable, alternate-port, Game Mode, and alternate-TV tests before requesting console service.
- If one game is affected in both modes, update it, reseat its card if applicable, and contact that game’s publisher when the issue persists.
- If every game is blurry in handheld mode after a system update and restart, request Nintendo service.
- If docked output fails across known-good Ultra High Speed HDMI cables, multiple HDMI-compatible TVs, and another dock, request Nintendo inspection and include the console, dock, and HDMI cable as Nintendo instructs.
Keep a short record of the successful and failed combinations. It prevents a working cable, TV port, or dock from being replaced unnecessarily and gives support a reproducible fault description. Include whether the fault is blur, shimmer, color mismatch, or an unstable signal, and note the selected resolution and refresh rate.
A quick diagnostic checklist
- Undock and compare the same game scene.
- Decide whether one title or all software is affected.
- Install System Update, restart, and update the game.
- For TV-only blur, reset dock power for 30 seconds and connect the official adapter directly to the wall.
- Connect the dock straight to the TV with an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable; remove receivers and adapters.
- Try another HDMI port, Game Mode, another TV, and another dock if available.
- Review System Settings > Display: resolution, output information, RGB range, screen size, 120Hz, ALLM, VRR, and HDR.
- For compatible original Switch games in handheld mode, test Handheld Mode Boost and disable it if touch, motion, or battery behavior becomes unacceptable.
- Escalate a title-specific issue to the game publisher and a persistent all-game hardware issue to Nintendo service.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my Switch 2 blurry on the TV but clear in handheld mode?
That pattern points first to the docked signal chain or TV processing. Reset dock power, connect directly with an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, try another HDMI port and Game Mode, then test another TV or dock.
Can Switch 2 make every game 4K?
No. Nintendo supports up to 4K only in compatible games on a compatible TV. A 4K output setting cannot add detail that a title does not render internally, and 4K output is limited to 60 frames per second.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Why does 120Hz not make my game sharper?
120Hz affects output timing, not a game’s internal resolution. Switch 2 offers 120Hz Output at 1080p or 1440p, and the game and display must support the relevant frame-rate behavior.

What does Handheld Mode Boost do?
For compatible original Switch software, it runs the software as if in TV Mode and can raise resolution. It may increase power use, treat attached Joy-Con 2 controllers as a Pro Controller, disable touch behavior, and interfere with touch- or motion-dependent games.
Should I use Automatic or a fixed TV Resolution setting?
Start with Automatic. If the picture is soft or unstable, test 1080p and 1440p separately to determine whether a TV input or intermediary mishandles a higher mode.
Why are colors washed out after fixing resolution?
Check RGB Range and HDR separately. Match RGB behavior to the TV, and temporarily compare HDR disabled if the image is gray, too dark, or posterized. Those symptoms indicate signal mapping rather than simple resolution.
When should I contact Nintendo?
Request service when every game remains distorted in handheld mode after updating and restarting, or when docked output fails across known-good cables, HDMI-compatible TVs, ports, and another dock. Nintendo asks for the console, dock, and HDMI cable for inspection in the latter case.
When should I contact a game publisher instead?
Contact the publisher when blur or shimmer is limited to one title after its update, especially if the same behavior appears in both handheld and docked modes and other games look normal.
The Bottom Line
Use mode and scope to choose the fix: update and restart first, isolate the docked HDMI path, then verify resolution, RGB, scaling, HDR, and refresh settings. Handheld Mode Boost can sharpen compatible original Switch games, but its touch, motion, and power trade-offs are real. Persistent all-game faults need Nintendo service; one-title shimmer usually belongs to the game.
