Blurry text and controls in Steam Big Picture usually come from a mismatched output resolution, operating-system display scaling, or Steam’s own interface scale. Menus cut off at the edges are usually caused by TV overscan or a non-native aspect mode. Artwork that becomes soft only when a game is selected can instead be the hover enlargement used by Big Art Mode.
Fix the signal first: start Steam with the intended TV or monitor active, use the display’s native resolution, disable TV overscan, and only then tune Steam’s UI-scale slider. The procedure below separates global display problems from artwork-specific behavior and from quality loss introduced by Steam Link streaming.

Identify which problem you actually have
Steam Big Picture is a full-screen, controller-oriented interface designed for a television but also usable on a normal monitor. That means several different rendering stages can produce a similar complaint. Before changing settings, look at what is soft or missing.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

|---|---|---|
| All text, buttons, and game tiles are soft | Output resolution, operating-system scaling, or Steam UI-scale mismatch | Set the computer and TV to the panel’s native resolution, then review Steam’s display settings |
| Only the selected game’s cover art becomes soft or stretched | Hover enlargement animation or low-resolution source artwork being enlarged | Move the selection to another tile and compare the standard view with Big Art Mode |
| Menu borders or text are missing at every edge | TV overscan or an incorrect picture-size/aspect-ratio mode | Choose the TV’s 1:1/native picture mode and disable overscan |
| The interface is sharp locally but soft through a streamed display | Steam Link resolution limit or bandwidth-related stream reduction | Check Steam Link’s Resolution Limit under Advanced Client Options |
| Big Picture opens in a window or on the wrong screen | Fullscreen state or an inactive/unintended display was selected at launch | Activate the intended display and use Alt+Enter to toggle fullscreen |
Do not increase UI scale to compensate for a low-resolution signal. A larger interface can make controls easier to read, but it cannot restore detail that was discarded before Steam received the image.

1. Establish the display and fullscreen state
Start Steam with the correct screen active
Valve defines Big Picture as “a mode of Steam designed for use with your TV and game controller.” The display path matters: PC or Steam Deck, video cable or wireless link, then TV or monitor. Turn on the intended display, switch the TV to the input carrying the computer signal, and start or restart Steam while that screen is active. If the operating system is treating the TV as a secondary or disconnected display, Steam may open on another screen or select an unsuitable mode.
Toggle fullscreen when necessary
If Big Picture appears in a window, is letterboxed unexpectedly, or does not occupy the intended screen, press Alt+Enter. Valve lists this shortcut in the Big Picture FAQ for switching fullscreen. After toggling, move through several menus. If every element is now consistently sharp and the edges are visible, the problem was the window state rather than artwork or UI scaling.
Verify the physical path
- Confirm that the TV input number matches the port used by the PC.
- Check whether an AV receiver, switch, capture device, or dock is between the computer and display; each can advertise a different supported mode.
- Make sure the cable and ports support the resolution and refresh rate you selected. Replace a cable only when the existing cable or adapter cannot carry that mode; a different cable does not correct overscan by itself.
2. Set a native resolution before changing Steam’s UI scale
Use the operating system or GPU display panel
Open the computer’s display settings or graphics-driver control panel and select the TV or monitor’s native pixel resolution. For a conventional widescreen television, use a 16:9 mode. Steam’s Steam Link display guidance gives 1920×1080 and 1280×720 as examples of 16:9 modes. These are examples, not a guarantee that every panel has either mode as its native resolution.
A non-native mode forces the display to resample the entire desktop. That resampling can make small Big Picture labels look fuzzy even when Steam itself is rendering correctly. If the display offers a native 4K mode, for example, choose that mode rather than assuming 1920×1080 will be sharper; if the computer or connection cannot sustain the native mode, use the highest stable mode that the whole path supports and understand that it is a compromise.
When the desired mode is not offered
Steam’s support instructions for Steam Link say to switch from fullscreen to windowed mode if 1920×1080 or 1280×720 is unavailable. In a window, select a supported resolution, apply it, and then test fullscreen again. An unavailable option usually indicates a capability or negotiation problem in the operating system, driver, adapter, receiver, or TV—not a hidden Big Picture setting.
Check refresh rate after resolution
After selecting resolution, verify the refresh rate shown for that display. Keep a mode that the TV accepts reliably. A display that repeatedly renegotiates its signal can cause flicker, blanking, or a fallback mode that appears blurry. Change one variable at a time so you can identify whether resolution or refresh-rate negotiation caused the change.

3. Remove TV overscan and correct the picture-size mode
Recognize overscan
Overscan enlarges the incoming picture so its outermost pixels extend beyond the visible panel. On a TV, the symptoms are distinctive: the Big Picture navigation bar may be clipped, the first or last characters of a heading can disappear, and borders are missing symmetrically on all sides. Overscan is not the same as a small Steam UI scale. Increasing or decreasing Steam’s slider cannot recover pixels hidden by the television.
Choose the TV’s 1:1 or native option
Open the TV’s picture-size, aspect-ratio, or screen-fit control and choose its pixel-accurate option. Manufacturers use different labels, including Just Scan, Screen Fit, Full Pixel, and 1:1. Disable settings described as overscan, zoom, stretch, or cinema enlargement. Apply the setting to the specific HDMI input used by the computer; many televisions store picture modes separately for each input.
Recheck the computer output
Once the TV is displaying the full frame, return to the computer’s display panel and confirm the intended resolution and refresh rate are still selected. The TV’s aspect setting and the computer’s output mode must agree. Steam’s support material treats the PC-to-TV connection and selected display mode as part of Big Picture setup, but it does not publish a Big Picture-specific overscan switch. Overscan correction is therefore a TV-side operation, followed by a computer-side resolution check.
4. Tune Steam’s interface scaling
Use the current Display path
A current Steam Community report gives this path in Big Picture: Menu → Settings → Display. Turn off Automatically Scale User Interface, then adjust the UI-scale slider manually. Choose the smallest value that makes labels readable from your normal seating distance. A very large value can make fewer items fit on screen and may make the interface feel less coherent even when it is not technically blurry.
Why automatic scaling can look wrong
Automatic scaling combines the display’s reported resolution with the operating system’s DPI or display-scaling value. If a TV is reported as a high-resolution monitor, or if Windows or macOS is using a non-100% scale, Steam may select a size that is uncomfortable or may expose an old scaling edge case. Valve’s February 1, 2023 client notes recorded “various fixes to make the UI scale better in higher resolutions” and a fix for the new Big Picture overlay being incorrectly sized when monitor display scaling was not 100%.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRestart after changing operating-system scaling
If you changed Windows or macOS display scaling, close and restart Steam before judging the result. A restart lets the client rebuild its interface and overlay dimensions using the new scale. Test the main menu, a library page, an in-game overlay, and a settings page; a change that helps one surface but leaves the overlay oversized indicates that the client has not fully reinitialized or that a separate overlay issue remains.

Separate readability from sharpness
UI scaling changes the physical size of controls; it does not increase the source resolution. If text is large but still fuzzy, return to the resolution and TV checks. If text is crisp but too small, the slider is the appropriate control. Avoid changing both the output resolution and the UI slider simultaneously, because you will not know which change produced the result.
5. Distinguish artwork blur from interface blur
Test neighboring tiles
Highlight several games in succession. If every tile, label, and menu is soft, treat the issue as a display-path or UI-scale problem and work through the earlier sections. If neighboring tiles remain sharp while only the selected tile becomes soft, the display is probably not globally misconfigured.
Understand the hover enlargement
A February 2025 Steam Community report describes cover art becoming stretched and noticeably blurry when a game tile is highlighted and the artwork enlarges. Enlarging a fixed-size image can reveal softness that is not visible at its normal size. The quality of the source art also varies by game, so one cover can look worse than another at the same display resolution. This report is a symptom report from the community, not a guarantee that every installation behaves identically.
Use a controlled comparison
- Move the selection away from the affected game and observe whether the neighboring artwork is sharp.
- Return to the game and note whether softness appears only during the enlargement animation or remains after the tile settles.
- Open the same library view at a different window size or on the computer’s built-in display, if available.
- If the blur follows the selected tile rather than the display, leave the global resolution and UI settings alone; changing them will not create higher-resolution cover art.
6. Check Big Art Mode separately
What Big Art Mode changes
Big Art Mode is a home-screen presentation inside Big Picture, not a different video output standard. PC Gamer reported on October 14, 2026 that it was rolling out of beta in the latest Steam client. The report places the switch at Big Picture Mode → Settings → Home and describes a full-size version of the selected game’s key art behind the normal art tile.
Compare the two presentations
Because Big Art Mode deliberately enlarges artwork, it can make compression, stretching, or limited source resolution more obvious. Turn it off temporarily and compare the same game in the standard home presentation. If the standard tile is crisp but the full-size background is soft, that visual difference is a consequence of the presentation and source art rather than proof that the TV is overscanning.
The location and wording of the control may change as Steam clients are redesigned. The October 2026 report describes the current rollout, so use the client’s Home settings as the reference if a future update moves the option.

7. Account for Steam Link streaming limits
Find the resolution limit
For a Steam Link receiving a streamed Big Picture session, open Settings → Streaming → Advanced Client Options → Resolution Limit. Valve’s support guidance gives 1280×720 (720p) as an example of a lower limit. The limit applies to the stream delivered to the receiving device; it is not a repair for a locally connected TV that is set to the wrong aspect mode.
Recommended Free Tools
Choose the limit for the receiving display
Use a 16:9 limit such as 1920×1080 or 1280×720 when the receiving display or network path requires it. Lower the limit only when bandwidth or the receiving hardware cannot handle the higher mode. Reducing stream resolution reduces the detail available to the interface, so a softer image after lowering the limit is expected rather than evidence of a new UI-scale failure.
Tell streaming softness from local softness
- If Big Picture is sharp when viewed directly on the host PC but soft on the Steam Link, investigate the stream resolution and network conditions.
- If both the host and receiver show the same softness, fix the host’s output resolution, operating-system scaling, or Steam UI scale first.
- If only the TV edges are missing, correct the TV’s picture-size mode; changing the Steam Link limit will not disable overscan.
A practical troubleshooting order
Use this order to avoid compensating for one problem with an unrelated setting:
- Turn on the intended TV or monitor, select its correct input, and restart Steam with that display active.
- Press
Alt+Enterif Big Picture is not in the expected fullscreen state. - Select the panel’s native resolution in the operating system or GPU control panel, using a normal 16:9 mode when appropriate.
- Set the TV to its 1:1/native picture-size option and disable overscan or zoom.
- Confirm the computer’s resolution and refresh rate again after the TV change.
- Open Menu → Settings → Display, disable Automatically Scale User Interface, and choose a readable slider value.
- Restart Steam after any operating-system display-scaling change, then test menus and the overlay.
- Compare standard Big Picture with Big Art Mode at Big Picture Mode → Settings → Home if only selected artwork looks soft.
- For Steam Link, inspect Settings → Streaming → Advanced Client Options → Resolution Limit and select a mode the receiving display and network can sustain.
Common mistakes and their fixes
Increasing UI scale to cure a low-resolution signal
A larger slider changes layout size, not pixel detail. Restore native output first, then use the slider only for reading comfort.
Changing Steam settings while overscan remains enabled
When the TV hides the frame, Steam cannot reveal the missing edges. Set the TV to Just Scan, Screen Fit, Full Pixel, 1:1, or the equivalent native option before adjusting Steam.

Lowering Steam Link resolution without noting the trade-off
A lower limit can improve compatibility with a constrained receiver or connection, but it intentionally sends fewer pixels. Record the previous value so you can restore it when using a capable display and network.
Leaving automatic scaling enabled after changing DPI
Valve’s 2023 notes specifically addressed higher-resolution scaling and overlays at non-100% monitor scaling. After changing the operating-system value, restart Steam and retest both Big Picture and the overlay.
When the image is still wrong
If the sequence does not resolve the problem, classify the remaining symptom before making another change. A globally soft image points back to the negotiated output mode, adapter, cable, or operating-system scaling. Uniformly clipped edges point to the TV’s input-specific picture-size setting. A single soft selected tile points to enlargement or source artwork. A host-versus-receiver difference points to Steam Link’s stream limit or the streaming path.

Keep a record of the working resolution, refresh rate, TV picture mode, Steam UI-scale value, and (if applicable) Steam Link Resolution Limit. Reapply those values after a driver, TV, or Steam client update instead of changing several controls at once. Community symptom reports can describe behavior that varies by client build, while Valve’s support and release notes provide the authoritative paths for fullscreen, display modes, streaming limits, and scaling fixes.
Bottom line
Fix Steam Big Art Mode in layers: native computer output, TV 1:1 picture mode with overscan disabled, then Steam’s manual UI scale. Treat hover-only cover-art softness and Big Art Mode’s enlarged background as presentation effects, not automatically as a faulty display. For Steam Link, choose a resolution limit that the receiving screen and network can support, knowing that a lower limit trades sharpness for compatibility.
