If BG3 “console cheats” stopped working after an update, first identify which feature you mean: a supported mod, a third-party mod, or the separate Lua command window provided by BG3 Script Extender. Each has a different fix. Check for mod updates, isolate conflicts, and verify Script Extender separately; a cleanup is not guaranteed to fix every mod or platform combination.
First, identify which console or cheat feature failed
“Console cheats” can refer to different things in Baldur’s Gate 3. The Script Extender Lua console is a separate command window, not a built-in in-game cheat overlay. A cheat feature may instead come from a mod installed through the in-game Mod Manager or from a third-party mod.

Before changing files, note your platform, current game patch, mod name and version, whether you use Script Extender, and whether the failure began immediately after an update. These details determine which troubleshooting path applies.

For a mod installed through BG3’s supported mod system, open the in-game Mod Manager and select Installed. Check whether the affected mod has an Update control and install an available update. Larian’s guidance explains how to update supported mods through the game’s interface: Mod Issues.

If you are playing multiplayer, compare the exact mod list and versions on every player’s game. A mismatch can cause a mod-dependent feature to fail even when it works in one player’s single-player game. Larian’s mod support guidance covers the distinction between supported and third-party mods.
Isolate third-party mod conflicts safely
After a major update, existing third-party files may conflict with changed game files. Larian recommends removing existing mod files when troubleshooting launch or in-game issues. Its support article identifies the game installation’s DataMods and DataPublic folders and, where applicable, the profile’s modsettings.lsx file. Follow the official instructions for your installation and profile; do not delete files based on a path that may not match your setup.

- Back up saves and relevant configuration before changing local files. Modded saves may rely on the mods they were created with.
- Disable mods and retry the same action that failed. If it works with mods disabled, a mod or combination of mods is implicated.
- Re-enable or update mods in a controlled way to identify the conflict, then contact the mod author with your game patch and mod version.
- If the problem persists with mods disabled, report it to Larian as a possible base-game issue.
Larian notes that it cannot directly manage or fix player-created mods. Its recommendation to remove files is a troubleshooting step, not a guarantee that every post-update failure will be resolved.
Check Script Extender and its Lua console separately
Confirm the extender can run on your game version
If the feature depends on BG3 Script Extender, check the project’s release information and launch the game so the extender can update through its documented update path. Norbyte’s release page says the extender auto-updates when the game launches and does not run on game versions older than Patch 5: BG3 Script Extender releases. Do not assume older manual installation or rollback steps apply to your current platform and build.

Enable the separate window only if you need it
If the specific problem is that the Lua console window does not appear, the Script Extender guide says to create or edit ScriptExtenderSettings.json in the game’s bin folder and set CreateConsole to true. Preserve valid JSON syntax, including commas, when editing an existing file. The guide describes the console as a second window that opens with the game and accepts commands while the game is running: BG3 Script Extender Console guide.
This setting is only needed for configuration commands for a mod. If you use a mod’s default settings and do not need to enter configuration commands, the guide says you can skip enabling the console.

Check platform and cross-play limits
Official mod tools are available on PC, while supported in-game mods may be available on other platforms subject to platform limitations and curation. The Script Extender configuration described above is a PC-oriented guide and should not be treated as a fix for console-platform players. Cross-saves can also be affected by differences in platform versions. Before troubleshooting a modded cross-save, confirm that the platforms involved are on compatible current patches and that each has the required mods and versions.

Where to report a remaining problem
- Supported mod: provide the mod name, version, platform, and game patch to its creator or use the mod’s Mod Manager listing.
- Third-party mod: contact its author after testing with other mods disabled.
- Unmodded game failure: report the issue to Larian through its support channels.
