Check your game version first
Larian’s March 26, 2026 announcement for Hotfix #36 identifies version 4.1.1.7209685. It says the update fixed a framerate drop that could lead to a crash while loading a save, along with several other crashes. That is a specific fix, not a guarantee that every current crash or save problem is resolved. Check your installed version and Larian’s latest news and support pages before troubleshooting a version-specific issue.

Fix a crash when Baldur’s Gate 3 starts
- Close background programs. Exit nonessential apps, particularly antivirus or firewall software, graphics overlays, monitoring or tuning utilities, and chat apps. Larian identifies these as possible sources of conflicts. If you use ASUS Sonic Studio Virtual Mixer, disable or uninstall it for a test; Larian notes a known startup-crash issue involving it.
- Verify the game installation. In Steam, use Verify Integrity of Game Files. In GOG Galaxy, use Verify / Repair. This checks the installation without requiring you to change save files.
- Test the other graphics renderer. In the game launcher, switch between DirectX 11 and Vulkan, then try starting the game. Larian says Vulkan may be faster in many cases but can be less stable; neither option is best for every PC.
- Address runtime errors only when indicated. If the error names a Visual C++ DLL, follow Larian’s Visual C++ Redistributable guidance. Also check for graphics-driver and Windows updates. A runtime repair is not a universal fix when there is no related error.
- Test without mods. Remove mods for a diagnostic launch, including outdated files in the game’s data folders and local AppData locations. Old mod files can remain in a profile location even after a game update.
- Clear the LevelCache only if simpler checks fail. Larian says a corrupt file in this folder can interfere with saving or loading, particularly if the installation is not fresh. Follow the official startup troubleshooting instructions; do not confuse the cache with your saved games.
- Use isolation tests if the crash continues. Check Event Viewer for the game’s application error and faulting module. A Windows clean boot or a different Windows account can help identify a software conflict, but these are diagnostic tests, not guaranteed repairs.
Investigate crashes during gameplay
For a crash that occurs after the game has launched, start with Larian’s gameplay-crash steps: remove old mod files, verify the installation through Steam or GOG, and check Event Viewer for an error code or faulting module. If needed, try a clean boot or a separate Windows administrator account to see whether the problem follows your usual Windows environment. Larian notes that you may need to copy a recent save to the other account to make the test practical; its support information lists the profile save location.

When contacting Larian Support, include a DxDiag report and relevant crash dumps if available. Describe when the crash happens—such as during combat, outside combat, or while using a particular skill or spell—so the report distinguishes a repeatable gameplay trigger from a general crash.

Separate save failures from crashes while loading
If the game will not save
Try closing nonessential programs, especially antivirus or backup utilities that monitor disk activity. Larian’s support index has a dedicated Unable to Save FAQ; use it for the full current procedure rather than applying steps intended for a crash. Back up your profile before any file operation: it contains saved games as well as configuration.
If loading a save produces an error or crash
Check the installed game version first, since Hotfix #36 specifically addressed a crash while loading a save. Larian also lists a separate FAQ for errors or crashes when loading saves. A crash during loading is not the same as being unable to save, and neither symptom by itself proves that the save is corrupted. If you test cache or profile-folder changes, make a separate copy of the save files first.
Protect saves before changing local folders
The local AppData profile includes saved games and configuration. If Larian’s later troubleshooting steps call for resetting or moving that profile, follow the official directions and rename the folder rather than casually deleting it. Keep a backup outside the folder being changed. If cloud synchronization is enabled, be aware that the client may restore synced profile data; check which copy you are preserving before testing.

Check the PC’s storage requirement
Larian’s official system requirements state: “A solid-state drive (SSD) is required to play Baldur’s Gate 3, and we recommend you install the game on yours.” An SSD is a requirement to check, not evidence that buying one will fix a mod conflict, a corrupted save, or a game-version bug.
