SpaceX is reportedly in talks to raise $40 billion to buy Nvidia AI chips, but the proposed financing has not been confirmed as completed. Reuters reported a potential mix of about $30 billion in investment-grade debt and $10 billion in bank loans; the reported discussions do not establish final terms, committed lenders, or a closing date.
What SpaceX is reportedly seeking
Reuters reported on October 6, with an update on October 7, 2026, that SpaceX was speaking with banks and asset managers about raising $40 billion for Nvidia AI chips. The company has not publicly confirmed the reported transaction. Reuters cited unnamed sources and said SpaceX and Nvidia had not immediately responded to requests for comment; Apollo and PIMCO declined to comment. Reuters reporting republished by Investing.com.

Axios also reported the proposed amount and financing mix, attributing its account to multiple reports. It said Apollo Global Management was leading the process. Reuters, citing the Financial Times, said Apollo was expected to lead and help place the debt. These are reports about talks, not public confirmation that Apollo or any other institution has committed funds. Axios.

How the reported $40 billion could be structured
| Proposed component | Reported amount | What is known |
|---|---|---|
| Investment-grade debt | About $30 billion | Reuters and Axios report this as part of the proposed financing. Final terms and investors have not been disclosed in the reviewed reporting. |
| Bank loans | About $10 billion | Reuters and Axios report this as the other part of the proposed financing. The banks and loan terms have not been established in the reviewed reporting. |
Reuters reported that SpaceX was in talks with PIMCO about financing, but PIMCO declined to comment. That does not make PIMCO a committed lender. The reviewed reports do not identify a definitive lender group, specify a closing date, or establish which Nvidia chip models the proposed funding would cover.

What Nvidia has confirmed about SpaceXAI hardware plans
Nvidia’s August 24, 2026 announcement describes a broader hardware relationship with SpaceXAI: deployment of Nvidia Vera CPUs for agentic AI workloads, expanded infrastructure behind Grok using the Vera Rubin platform, and an effort to extend a Vera Rubin NVL72 system into space with a first-generation Starmind satellite. This is official evidence of announced technology plans, not confirmation of the reported $40 billion financing or proof that the proposed borrowing covers those specific systems. Nvidia’s announcement.
Nvidia describes Vera as an 88-core CPU with up to 1.2 TB/s of memory bandwidth and claims up to 1.8 times faster task completion than x86 CPUs across specified workloads. Those are Nvidia’s specifications and performance claims, not independent measurements. They provide technical context for the announced deployment, but do not reveal the quantity or models of chips involved in the reported financing.

Why the proposal fits a wider AI infrastructure funding push
Large AI-compute projects require more than processors: Nvidia’s July 26, 2026 SEC filing reported $279 billion in supply and capacity commitments and warned that data-center deployment depends on land, power, facilities, and capital. Those disclosures illustrate the broader infrastructure burden; they do not identify or confirm SpaceX’s proposed financing. Nvidia’s SEC filing.

Nvidia called the arrangements preliminary and said they might not lead to definitive agreements. The announcement signals an effort to finance the wider buildout, but does not show that those platforms are funding SpaceX’s reported proposal. Nvidia’s financing announcement.

In that announcement, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said, “In AI, compute is revenue.” That is his view of the business opportunity, not a finding about SpaceX’s ability to repay this borrowing.
Reuters also cited a Morgan Stanley estimate that AI infrastructure would require $1.5 trillion in external financing by 2028. That is a secondhand estimate reported by Reuters, not an observed financing total or a forecast specific to SpaceX. Reuters reporting republished by Investing.com.

What SpaceX’s latest reported financials do—and do not—show
SpaceX’s second-quarter 2026 results release reported $7.8 billion in revenue for the quarter ended June 30, up 92% year over year; a net loss of $541 million; and adjusted EBITDA of $3.5 billion, up 191% year over year. The company also described new AI-compute agreements and contracted cloud-services sales. These reported figures give scale context, but they do not establish available cash, creditworthiness, or the ability to repay a $40 billion borrowing. The AI agreements and cloud-services sales are separate disclosures, not confirmation of the chip financing. SpaceX’s results release.

What remains unknown
- Whether SpaceX will ultimately raise the reported amount or proceed with the proposed structure.
- The final interest rates, maturities, collateral, covenants, and other financing terms.
- Which lenders or investors, if any, will commit, and whether Apollo or PIMCO will participate.
- The precise Nvidia products, quantities, and delivery schedule tied to the reported funding.
No official SpaceX, Nvidia, or Apollo statement in the reviewed reporting confirms the $40 billion transaction. Until the companies or financing parties disclose definitive details, it is best understood as a reported financing effort rather than a completed borrowing or chip purchase.
