AI-generated game mods are not automatically dangerous, but AI origin is not proof that a file is safe. Judge the specific download: use the platform’s official project page, check its scan status and recent history, and verify its files, requirements, and permissions. Platform scanning can reduce risk, but it cannot guarantee that a mod is harmless.
Can an AI-made mod contain a virus?
Yes. A mod made with AI could contain malware, just as a mod made without AI could. The method used to create a mod does not tell you whether its files are trustworthy, and there is no reliable comparative statistic showing that AI-generated mods are more or less likely to contain malware than human-made mods.

Keep four separate questions in view: whether the file is malicious, whether it works with your game and other mods, whether AI use is disclosed, and whether the creator has the right to use its assets. A mod can pass one of these checks and fail another.
How do you check whether a mod file is safe?
Start at the official project page
Download from the mod’s official project page rather than an unfamiliar mirror. Confirm that the description explains what the mod changes, which game version it targets, what dependencies it needs, and how it is installed. Nexus Mods requires files to work as described and calls for caveats and requirements to be presented; CurseForge’s guidelines similarly call for descriptions of functional changes and compliance with the game developer’s EULA and terms. These requirements are useful context, not a guarantee that every upload is safe.

Read the scan status, not just the badge color
Nexus Mods says uploaded content goes through multiple security checks and a virus scan before release. Its indicators distinguish files that passed internal checks and a VirusTotal scan from those that passed internal checks but could not be scanned by VirusTotal, as well as files that have not been scanned, are awaiting a scan, or failed or were flagged by scanning. A failed or flagged result is a reason to pause and investigate, not automatic proof of malware. Nexus Mods notes that false positives occur and says a flagged file “doesn’t automatically mean the file is malicious, just that it requires closer inspection.” Consider the status alongside the project’s downloads, endorsements, account history, and recent reports; popularity alone does not establish safety.

Check the file and its behavior against the description
Be cautious if the download includes an executable that the mod does not appear to need, asks for game or account credentials, or requests unexplained network access. Nexus Mods restricts executables that communicate with the internet unless that behavior is crucial to the mod or utility. If a file’s purpose is unclear, ask the author or choose a different mod rather than running it on trust.

These cases are not proof of malicious intent, but they leave you with less assurance. Do not disable security controls or bypass a platform warning just to install a file.

Review the author and release history
Look at who uploaded the file, whether the project has a consistent history, and whether recent updates or user reports raise concerns. A long-standing account or positive endorsements are context, not a safety certificate. Be especially careful with a release whose files, requirements, or installation instructions have changed without a clear explanation.
What do Nexus Mods and CurseForge checks actually establish?
Both platforms describe screening and moderation, but those processes lower risk rather than eliminate it. Nexus Mods documents its file checks and scan-status indicators. CurseForge describes automated checks and manual review; its whitelisting process skips manual review for some releases, though automated technical checks still run. Its stated whitelisting eligibility includes five clean recent file clusters, at least one file updated within 90 days, and more than 1,000 total project downloads. These are eligibility criteria for that process, not evidence that every eligible file is harmless.

CurseForge also documented a malware incident in June 2023, when malicious accounts uploaded malware, and published detection and remediation guidance. That incident demonstrates that platform safeguards can have limits; its project-specific counts are not estimates of how often mods are infected. The historical guidance is available on CurseForge’s incident page; check that any linked tools or steps are still current before relying on them.

Confirm game version and dependencies
A clean file can still crash the game, conflict with another mod, or affect a save if it targets a different game version or needs an incompatible dependency. Check the project page’s stated game version, requirements, and installation steps before installing. No universal compatibility guarantee is established by the platform checks described above.

Treat AI disclosure and asset rights as separate checks
AI disclosure does not answer whether a file contains malware, and a clean scan does not establish that the creator had permission to use every asset. Nexus Mods’ April 27, 2023 post said AI-generated mod content was not against its rules at that time, while noting that content could be removed after a credible complaint from an affected creator or rights holder. That is a dated statement, not a universal or complete account of every platform’s current AI policy. Nexus Mods’ current guidelines use separate AI-Generated Content, AI Media, and AI Assisted tags.
When should you stop rather than install?
- The platform reports a failed or flagged scan, or the file is unscanned and you cannot establish why.
- The download is password-protected or nested in a way that prevents scanning, and you cannot verify its contents through a trustworthy source.
- An executable, credential request, or internet connection is unexplained or does not fit the mod’s stated purpose.
- The project page does not clearly identify the target game version, required dependencies, or installation steps.
- The file’s behavior or contents do not match the official project description.
If you already ran a file that now seems suspicious, stop using it and consult current guidance from the platform and your device’s security provider. Do not rely on old incident-response downloads without confirming that they remain maintained.
