If an Android app keeps crashing, restart your phone and update both the app and Android first. Then force stop the app and clear its cache. If only one app is affected, troubleshoot that app; if several apps or the phone itself are failing, check available storage and test in safe mode. Treat clearing app data, reinstalling, and factory resetting as progressively more disruptive steps because they can erase information.
Start with the least disruptive fixes
- Restart your phone. After it restarts, open the affected app and see whether it still crashes. Google recommends restarting after each troubleshooting step so you can tell whether that change helped.
- Update the app. Open the Google Play Store, tap your profile icon, then choose Manage apps & device and install available updates. If the app is not listed as needing an update, continue to the next check.
- Check for an Android update. Open Settings and look for System update or Software update. The exact label and path depend on the phone maker and Android version. Restart and test the app after installing an update.
Force stop the app and clear its cache

Open Settings, find the affected app under Apps or App management, and tap Force stop. Menu names vary by device. Open the app again; if it continues to crash, try clearing its cache.

Clear cache, not storage, first
In the app’s Settings page, open Storage & cache or a similarly named option and choose Clear cache. Cache contains temporary files. The app may take longer to load the next time while it rebuilds them.
Do not confuse this with Clear storage or Clear data. Those options erase the app’s locally stored data and may sign you out or remove unsynced work. Before using them, confirm that important information is backed up or synced and that you can sign back into the account. Google distinguishes clearing temporary cache from clearing app data in its Android storage guidance.

Find out whether one app or the phone is affected
Only one app crashes
If other apps work normally, the problem is more likely limited to the failing app. Check for an update, and contact the app’s developer if the crash persists. You can uninstall and reinstall the app, but first check whether its data is backed up: uninstalling can erase saved app data. Reinstalling also may not help if the underlying problem is in the app itself.
Several apps crash or the phone freezes
When multiple apps fail, or the device itself freezes or restarts, look beyond a single app. Check free space in Settings under Storage. Google says an Android phone can begin having issues when less than 10% of its storage is free; this is a warning threshold, not proof that low storage caused a particular crash. Google Play separately identifies less than 1 GB available as one possible sign of insufficient space for app downloads and installations, not as a universal app-crash threshold.

Use safe mode to check for interference from downloaded apps
Safe mode temporarily disables downloaded apps. If the problem disappears in safe mode, a downloaded app may be involved. The way to enter safe mode differs by manufacturer, so use the instructions for your specific phone rather than relying on a button sequence that may not apply.
- Restart the phone in safe mode using the handset maker’s instructions.
- Use the phone in safe mode and check whether the original crashing or freezing problem continues.
- If the problem is gone, restart normally and remove recently installed apps one at a time. Restart and check after each removal to identify whether one of them was involved.
If the problem remains in safe mode, downloaded apps are less likely to explain it; continue with device-level troubleshooting or contact the manufacturer or carrier.

Troubleshoot Google Play only when Play features are failing
If apps generally run but you cannot download or update them through Google Play, check your internet connection, available storage, system updates, phone restart, and date and time settings. These checks address Play Store installation problems; they are not a reason to clear Google Play data when an unrelated app crashes.
Clearing Google Play Store cache or data can reset some store settings. Clearing Google Play services data is a more consequential later step: Google advises trying other troubleshooting first and warns that saved information or payment and account reauthentication may be affected. Do not use it as an early fix for a crash confined to one app.

Reserve factory reset for persistent device-level problems
A factory reset removes all data and apps from the phone. Google recommends backing up before resetting. It is disproportionate for a single crashing app unless other diagnostics indicate a wider device problem and less disruptive troubleshooting has failed. If the whole device continues to crash, consult the phone maker or carrier for model-specific support before deciding to reset.

Choose the right support channel
- One app fails while others work: contact that app’s developer.
- Several apps or the phone itself are affected: contact the device manufacturer or carrier if safe-mode and storage checks do not resolve the issue.
- Google Play downloads or updates fail: use Google Play support guidance for installation and store problems.
