Start with the connection between your phone and car, then check notification access for the assistant currently in use, and finally verify the messaging app’s incoming-alert settings. If a message arrived but disappeared, open Android Auto’s message tile or notification center and choose Play aloud. This order separates connection failures from permission, app, and audio-playback problems.
Identify exactly where the failure occurs
Android Auto problems that sound identical can have different causes. A car that is not connected cannot display or read anything. A connected car may show notifications from some apps but not another. A notification can also be visible while spoken playback fails. Use the symptom that matches your situation to choose the first check.

These are troubleshooting routes, not separate Android Auto modes. The same phone can move between them as you test each layer.

Do this before changing notification permissions. If Android Auto itself is not connected, notification settings cannot make a message appear on the car display.

Wireless connection requirements
For a wireless setup, pair the phone and car over Bluetooth. During first-time setup, Google says Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services should remain enabled. Complete the initial setup while the vehicle is in Park. A phone can be paired for ordinary calls and still fail to establish the Android Auto connection, so confirm that Android Auto actually launches on the head unit.
Reconnect in the correct order
- Park the vehicle and turn on the car display.
- On the phone, turn on Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services.
- Open the car’s Bluetooth pairing screen and select the phone. Accept the pairing prompts on both devices.
- Wait for Android Auto to start on the car display. Approve any first-use prompts on the phone or head unit.
- Send a test message to the phone from another account or device, then wait for the Android Auto notification.
Android Auto is integrated into supported phones; Google’s setup guidance states that it does not require a separate Android Auto download. If the car cannot connect at all, check whether the phone and vehicle are compatible and follow the vehicle manufacturer’s connection instructions. A cable or wireless adapter is not a remedy for a notification permission problem; consider accessories only when the underlying issue is a separate wired or wireless connection failure.
If connection still fails
Do not continue changing message settings while the head unit is offline. Record the phone model, Android version, vehicle or head-unit make and model, and Android Auto version. The vehicle manufacturer may need those details for a compatibility or firmware investigation. Once Android Auto reliably opens, continue with notification access.
2. Give the active assistant notification access
Android Auto relies on the assistant that is presented on your device. Depending on the phone, rollout, locale, and market, that assistant may be Gemini or Google Assistant. Message notifications require the phone to be connected to the car’s Bluetooth and notification access to be enabled for the assistant in use.
Use the car-display settings path
- On the car display, open Settings.
- Choose Apps and notifications.
- Open Special app access.
- Select Notification access.
- Turn on access for Gemini or Google Assistant, whichever your device presents.
- Accept the confirmation prompt, if one appears, and return to Android Auto.
Exact labels can differ by Android version, phone maker, vehicle, and head unit. If you do not see the same sequence, use the Settings search field for Notification access. The relevant permission is the one that allows the current assistant to read notifications; enabling an assistant that is not active on your phone will not solve the problem.

Test the permission before changing anything else
Ask the assistant to read a newly received message, or wait for a new message while Android Auto is connected. If the message now appears, the missing permission was the cause. If the assistant responds but one application remains silent, leave notification access enabled and move to that app’s incoming-alert controls.
3. Check incoming notifications for the messaging app
Android Auto can be working normally while an individual SMS or RCS application suppresses its own incoming alerts. Check both the application’s settings and Android’s app-level notification controls.

Check inside the messaging app
- Open the messaging application on the phone.
- Find its notification or conversation settings.
- Make sure incoming messages produce a notification, rather than being limited to soundless, hidden, or manually opened conversations.
- Send a new test message and observe whether the phone’s notification shade receives it.
If the phone never receives a notification, Android Auto has nothing to mirror. Resolve the phone-level alert first. If the phone receives the alert but Android Auto does not, continue with Android’s app notification controls and the assistant permission check.
Check Android’s app notification controls
Open the phone’s Settings, find the messaging app under its app-information or notification controls, and verify that notifications for incoming messages are allowed. Manufacturers use different menu names, so search Settings for the app name and Notifications if necessary. Do not disable notifications for the entire app while trying to enable only incoming messages; conversation categories may be controlled separately.
The Google Messages pop-up setting
One Google-hosted community report described a device where enabling Google Messages’ Pop on screen option for Incoming Messages restored the banner. That is an anecdotal, device-specific clue rather than a guaranteed or Google-verified fix. If your phone exposes the same category, it is reasonable to test it, but keep the distinction clear: a pop-up preference on one device does not establish a universal Android Auto requirement.
4. Recover a dismissed message and play it aloud
A notification that was swiped away may not be gone. Google’s Android Auto messaging instructions say missed or dismissed messages can remain available in a message tile or the notification center.

Use the on-screen control
- Open the relevant message tile or Android Auto notification center on the car display.
- Select the message you want to hear.
- Choose Play aloud.
- Follow the on-screen or spoken prompt if the assistant asks which message to use.
You can also tap a visible message notification, or ask Gemini or Google Assistant to read messages by voice. The available commands and screen labels can vary with the assistant and head unit, but the three supported routes are voice request, tapping the notification, and selecting Play aloud from a tile or notification-center item.
When playback works for some apps only
Android Auto’s messaging support covers compatible SMS and messaging applications, not every app automatically. If the notification appears for one service but not another, compare the apps rather than repeatedly changing the car’s audio settings. Verify the silent app’s incoming notification category, then check whether that application is supported by Android Auto’s messaging interface. The absence of a supported integration cannot be repaired by turning on message summaries.
5. Account for the Gemini and Google Assistant transition
Google says Gemini is replacing Google Assistant on most mobile devices and supports the same commands, with more natural speech. The Android Auto messaging instructions still refer to both assistants. Do not assume every phone, language, country, or vehicle has completed the transition.
Use the assistant that your device actually shows
- If the car or phone identifies Gemini, enable Gemini under Notification access and use its voice controls.
- If it identifies Google Assistant, enable Google Assistant under the same permission and use Assistant’s message commands.
- If the assistant name changes after an update, revisit Notification access; the permission may be listed under the newly active assistant.
This distinction matters when notifications stopped after an assistant change. The car can remain paired while the newly presented assistant lacks notification access.

Message Summary is optional. It is not required for a normal message notification or for using Play aloud.

Where the setting is located
On the Android Auto display, open Settings and then Notifications to find the Message Summary option when it is offered. Availability varies by device, region, country, and language. Google also warns that summaries may contain mistakes, so treat a summary as a convenience rather than a verbatim replacement for the original message.
What to do when summaries are unavailable
Leave the feature off and use ordinary notification playback. An unavailable summary feature does not explain why a compatible message notification is missing, and enabling it will not grant the assistant notification access.

Common mistakes that make troubleshooting take longer
Changing app settings before proving Android Auto is connected
A notification category cannot fix a disconnected head unit. Confirm that Android Auto opens and remains connected before judging message behavior.
Enabling the wrong assistant
Gemini and Google Assistant can appear on different devices or at different stages of the rollout. Grant access to the assistant that is actually offered on the phone or car display.
Treating a phone banner as the only Android Auto location
A dismissed message can move to a tile or notification center. Check those locations and use Play aloud before concluding that the message was lost.
Assuming a community workaround is universal
The Google Messages Pop on screen report may help a similar device, but it is not an official requirement for all phones. Use it as a targeted test after confirming the broader notification settings.
Turning on summaries to solve a basic alert problem
Summaries are optional, can vary by region and language, and may contain errors. They do not replace notification access or ordinary read-aloud controls.

When to escalate the problem
Escalate only after connection, assistant permission, app notifications, and playback controls have been tested. Provide a compact diagnostic record so support can reproduce the right layer of the failure:
- Phone make and model.
- Android version.
- Vehicle or head-unit make and model.
- Android Auto version.
- Messaging application and whether it uses SMS, RCS, or another service.
- Assistant currently shown: Gemini or Google Assistant.
- Country and language or locale.
- Whether the message appears in the phone’s notification shade.
- Whether Android Auto connects and whether other messaging apps work.
- Whether the alert is visible on the car display but fails only when read aloud.
If one application fails while others work, focus the report on that app’s notification configuration or compatibility. If Android Auto itself will not connect, use the vehicle maker’s support path rather than treating the symptom as a messaging bug.
A final, safe test sequence
- Park the car and reconnect the phone through Bluetooth; keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services enabled for wireless setup.
- Confirm Android Auto opens on the head unit.
- Enable Notification access for the active assistant under Settings > Apps and notifications > Special app access > Notification access, adjusting the labels or using Settings search when necessary.
- Verify incoming-message notifications both inside the messaging app and in Android’s app notification controls.
- Send a new test message and see whether the phone’s notification shade receives it.
- If the car shows the alert, tap it or open the message tile or notification center and select Play aloud.
- If the alert was dismissed, retrieve it from the tile or notification center.
- Ignore Message Summary while diagnosing basic alerts; enable it only if it is available in your region and you accept that summaries can contain mistakes.
Following that order identifies whether the fault is the car connection, assistant permission, a particular app, or the final audio-control step, without treating all missing-message symptoms as the same problem.
