Before buying or keeping one, find the exact model and hardware revision, check the manufacturer’s security-support end date for your country, and confirm how firmware updates are authenticated and delivered. “End of sale,” “end of software maintenance,” “end of vulnerability support,” and “last date of support” can be different milestones.
If the exact router is past its security-support date and the vendor offers no supported update path, replacement is the practical choice. That does not prove every older router is immediately compromised; it means newly discovered flaws may no longer receive a vendor fix.

Why router support dates matter
Your router sits between every device in the home and the internet. Its firmware controls wireless authentication, firewall behavior, remote-management features, DNS handling and other network functions. A router can continue forwarding traffic for years after its formal support ends, but continued operation is not the same as continued security maintenance.

Support terminology is easy to misread. A product can remain usable after it stops being sold, and a vendor can stop routine software maintenance before ending vulnerability fixes. Conversely, a notice may list several dates that apply to different obligations. Always interpret the date attached to the exact model, hardware revision and region you own or plan to buy.

The milestones are not interchangeable
| Milestone | What it usually describes | Why a buyer should care |
|---|---|---|
| End of sale | The date a vendor or channel stops selling the model. | A router may still be supported after this date, or it may already be near the end of its maintenance window. |
| End of software maintenance releases | The end of planned software or feature releases. | Routine improvements may stop while vulnerability fixes continue under a separate policy. |
| End of vulnerability or security support | The date after which the vendor no longer commits to fixing security flaws. | This is the key date for deciding whether an old router remains a defensible internet gateway. |
| Last date of support | The final date for the vendor’s stated support services, which may include technical assistance or contracts. | It may not match the end date for security fixes, so read the definitions rather than assuming they are identical. |
Cisco’s lifecycle notices illustrate the distinction. A July 2026 notice for specified C1112, C1113, C1116, C1117, C1131 and C1161 integrated services routers lists an end-of-sale date of January 31, 2027 and an end-of-software-maintenance-releases date of January 31, 2028, while treating vulnerability/security support and the last date of support as separate entries. Those dates apply to the named enterprise models, not to consumer routers generally.
How long does a router get security updates?
There is no universal industry lifetime. The answer depends on the model, hardware revision, market and the vendor’s published policy. A statement from one manufacturer should not be used as a standard for every router.
NETGEAR’s general policy
NETGEAR says its products generally reach end of support (EOS) three years after the last sale. The company also says last-sale timing can vary by SKU and region and directs owners to its model lookup. At EOS, products no longer receive firmware updates, including important security updates. Treat three years as that company’s general policy, not as a promise that every router from every brand receives three years of fixes.

TP-Link’s model-specific advisory
In a November 9, 2024 advisory, TP-Link identified certain affected products as having reached EOS and as no longer receiving active support, including security updates. The same advisory described a vulnerability-specific firmware release for listed products. This shows why an EOS label and a particular remediation must be read together: a vendor may publish a targeted fix or advisory for an EOS model without promising ongoing maintenance. Check the exact model, hardware revision and region instead of generalizing from that case.
ASUS demonstrates the importance of geography
ASUS’s router support page applies only to Singapore and lists end dates for selected models. The page was updated September 3, 2026 and says extended support may be provided after the stated dates. A model’s status in one country or support program therefore cannot establish its status elsewhere. Use the regional page that matches where the router is sold and operated.
What “out of support” actually means
When a vendor says an EOS product no longer receives firmware updates, assume that includes security updates unless the notice explicitly says otherwise. You may still be able to download an old firmware file, change settings and use the wireless network, but those capabilities do not create a supported update path.

Do not turn an EOS notice into an unsupported claim that a particular router is already hacked or unsafe in every setup. Risk depends on the vulnerabilities present, enabled features, exposure to the internet and the other controls around the device. The support decision is simpler: if the model has no vendor-supported security path, it should not remain your long-term primary gateway.
How to judge whether a router’s update process is trustworthy
A support promise is useful only when updates can reach the device reliably and cannot be replaced by tampered firmware. The UK National Cyber Security Centre says, “It’s important that device updates are installed securely.” Its manufacturer principles recommend that devices verify an update comes from a legitimate source and has not been tampered with. The guidance also recommends publishing the minimum period during which security updates will be provided.
Minimum commitment and clear disclosure
- Look for a stated minimum security-update period or an exact end date for the model.
- Check whether the commitment covers the hardware revision you are buying, not just a product family name.
- Confirm the market or country covered by the policy.
- Find out whether dependent components, mobile apps or cloud services have their own support lifetimes.
The NCSC also says manufacturers should disclose when device components rely on third-party security updates and provide those components’ support lifetimes. A router can have a long headline support period while a critical dependency has a shorter one, so the scope of the commitment matters as much as the number of years.

Authenticated and protected delivery
NIST’s February 2024 preliminary consumer-grade router profile describes a stronger update design: components receive, verify and apply signed and encrypted software updates; the device prevents rollback attacks; configuration integrity is preserved; and a failed update can return the router to a usable state. It also describes keeping software current through automatic application or consistent customer notification.
This is preliminary design guidance, not a binding rule and not proof that a particular retail router meets every recommendation. Still, it gives buyers concrete questions to ask: Does the router verify firmware signatures? Is the download channel protected? Can an attacker force installation of an older vulnerable version? Does the vendor notify owners consistently when automatic installation is unavailable? What happens if power fails during an update?
How to check whether your router is still supported
- Record the exact identity. Read the model number and hardware revision from the label, administration page or original listing. Similar names can represent different revisions with different firmware and dates.
- Locate the official lifecycle page. Search the manufacturer’s support or EOS section for that exact model and select the page for your country or region.
- Read the date definitions. Determine whether the listed date ends sales, software maintenance, vulnerability fixes, technical support or all of them. If the page uses an acronym such as EOS, open its definition.
- Check current firmware information. Compare the installed version with the vendor’s download or release-notes page. A recent file does not by itself prove that future security fixes are promised.
- Check the delivery mechanism. Look for automatic updates, reliable update notifications and information about firmware signing or integrity checks.
- Check dependencies. If management requires an app, cloud account or separate modem component, read the support terms for those pieces too.
- Save the evidence. Record the model, revision, regional page and the support date. This prevents confusion when a product family has multiple schedules.
How to compare two router policies before buying
Support should be compared alongside coverage, performance, price and compatibility with your internet service provider and home network. The following framework keeps a long marketing page from obscuring the decision.
Best Value
- Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
- Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
- Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
- MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
| Comparison axis | Questions to ask | Stronger evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Commitment length and clarity | Is there a minimum period or an exact security-support end date? | A dated, model-specific policy rather than “regular updates” language. |
| Scope | Does the date cover this hardware revision, country and dependent software? | A regional support page and component disclosures. |
| Delivery and integrity | Are updates automatic or clearly announced, and how are they authenticated? | Documented signature verification, protected delivery and recovery behavior. |
| Milestone meaning | Does the date end sales, feature releases, vulnerability fixes or technical help? | Separate definitions for each lifecycle milestone. |
| Buyer fit | Will it cover the home, meet speed needs and work with the ISP? | Verified coverage and compatibility, considered together with support. |
A vague promise is not necessarily proof of poor engineering, but it gives you less certainty about the router’s usable lifespan. A clearly documented commitment lets you plan replacement before the device becomes an unsupported gateway.
What to do when a router reaches end of security support
If a supported update path still exists
Install the vendor’s approved firmware, enable automatic updates when available, and follow the vendor’s instructions for protecting the administration interface. Do not use firmware intended for a different hardware revision or region. If a vendor publishes a vulnerability-specific update for an EOS product, read the advisory carefully: the fix may address one issue without restoring a general support commitment.
If no supported update path exists
Ask your internet service provider whether it supplies or requires a supported gateway, then compare replacement routers using the policy criteria above. Prioritize a model with a documented regional commitment and a dependable update mechanism rather than choosing solely on wireless speed or discount price.

If the old router must remain temporarily
Keep the interim period short. Disable remote administration from the internet, remove unnecessary services, use a strong unique administrator password and separate guest or untrusted devices where practical. These measures reduce exposure but do not turn an unsupported device into a supported one. Replace it when a suitable supported gateway is available.
Retiring an old router safely
- Back up only the network settings you genuinely need, and note that saved credentials may be present in that configuration.
- Follow the manufacturer’s factory-reset procedure so stored Wi-Fi keys, administrator credentials and account tokens are removed.
- Unregister the device from the vendor account or management app where the manufacturer provides that option.
- Remove labels or records that reveal your network credentials before handing the hardware to another person.
- Use an appropriate electronics-recycling route rather than ordinary household waste.
For its EOS products, NETGEAR specifically recommends a factory reset, unregistering the device from the account and e-waste recycling. Other manufacturers may use different menus, so follow the instructions for your model.
Quick Recap
Common buyer mistakes
- Assuming end of sale means immediate insecurity. Sale, maintenance and security dates can be separate.
- Assuming “three years” applies everywhere. NETGEAR’s general statement is not an industry standard, and its last-sale timing can vary by SKU and region.
- Checking only the product family name. Hardware revisions often have separate firmware and lifecycle entries.
- Using the wrong regional page. ASUS’s dated list is Singapore-specific, demonstrating why geography matters.
- Treating one emergency patch as ongoing support. TP-Link’s 2024 advisory shows that a targeted release can exist for a named EOS product without a promise of future maintenance.
- Confusing automatic updating with secure updating. Delivery also needs source authentication, tamper protection, rollback resistance and a recovery path.
- Declaring an old router compromised without evidence. An unsupported status justifies replacement planning; a specific compromise requires vulnerability-specific evidence.
