No. Checking your own FICO® score or credit report through an authorized consumer service is a soft inquiry, and soft inquiries do not lower FICO scores. A credit application is different: the lender may record a hard inquiry, which can affect your score. If you notice a change, identify the inquiry type and review the rest of your credit file instead of assuming that simply looking at your score caused it.
What happens when you check your own FICO score?
A consumer-initiated request to see your own score or report is treated as a soft inquiry. FICO says that checking through a credit reporting agency or an organization authorized to provide consumer reports does not count against your FICO score. The same principle applies whether you are checking out of curiosity, preparing for a major purchase, or reviewing your file for errors.

FICO’s educational material states: “Checking your own FICO® Scores is considered a soft inquiry, which never affects your FICO® Scores.” The important detail is who initiated the check and why. You requested access to information already associated with your credit file; you did not ask a lender to evaluate a new application.

A score service may show an inquiry entry in the report even though the entry has no scoring effect. Visibility and scoring are separate concepts. Seeing a record on your report does not mean that FICO used it to reduce your score.

Soft inquiries and hard inquiries compared
The practical question is not “Did an inquiry happen?” but “What kind of inquiry was it?” The two categories have different triggers, audiences and scoring treatment.
| Feature | Soft inquiry | Hard inquiry |
|---|---|---|
| Typical trigger | You check your own score or report, or an organization performs a non-application review. | You apply for a loan, credit card or other new credit, and a lender evaluates the application. |
| Effect on FICO score | Not counted in FICO scoring; it does not lower the score. | May affect the score. The effect varies with the person’s credit history. |
| Where it may appear | May be visible to you on your consumer report, but generally is not shown to lenders reviewing the report. | Visible to lenders and listed in the credit-report inquiry section. |
| How long the record can remain | The supplied FICO guidance does not assign a single reporting period for every soft inquiry. | myFICO says a hard inquiry can remain on a credit report for up to two years. |
| How long FICO considers it | It is not counted as a score-lowering inquiry. | FICO scores consider inquiries from the most recent 12 months. |
That table describes the usual distinction, not a guarantee about every interaction with a financial company. A lender, bank or financial app can perform different kinds of checks depending on the service and your consent. Confirm the inquiry label in the report rather than guessing from the company’s name.
Why a credit application can affect your score
Applying for credit signals that you may be taking on a new financial obligation. In that setting, a lender may request your report as part of underwriting. That request is commonly recorded as a hard inquiry. FICO may consider hard inquiries when calculating a score, so an application can have an effect even though a self-check cannot.
“May affect” is deliberate. A hard inquiry does not produce an identical point change for everyone, and the available guidance does not establish a universal number of points. The impact depends on the person’s credit history and the information in the file. Do not treat a hard inquiry as an automatic, fixed-size deduction.

The reporting and scoring clocks are also different. A hard inquiry can stay on the report for up to two years, according to myFICO, while FICO scores consider inquiries from the last 12 months. An entry can therefore remain visible after it has stopped being considered by the scoring model.
How to check your score or report without creating a hard inquiry
Use the following process when your goal is simply to see your own information.
- Choose a consumer-access channel. Use a credit reporting agency or another organization authorized to provide consumer reports. FICO identifies consumer score and report services as a way to view your information without turning the request into a credit application.
- Read the action being offered. The page should describe access to your existing score or report, not an application for a new loan, card or line of credit. Do not assume that a “prequalification” or “see your odds” feature has the same treatment without checking its disclosure.
- Give consent only for the requested access. Follow the service’s identity-verification steps and review any disclosure about an inquiry. If the service says the check is a soft inquiry, it should not lower your FICO score.
- Save the report date and score version. Scores can differ by bureau, scoring model and date. Recording what you viewed helps you compare like with like if you check again later.
- Inspect the inquiry section. If an entry appears, read its description and classification. A soft inquiry may be listed for your viewing even though FICO does not count it.
A paid score service is optional. You do not need to buy a subscription to establish the basic rule that an authorized self-check is soft. For free credit reports, myFICO directs consumers to AnnualCreditReport.com. A report and a FICO score are related but not identical products, so confirm which one you are viewing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf your score changed after you checked it
A change observed after a self-check does not prove that the self-check caused it. FICO scores use information in the credit file, and that information can change independently of when you opened an app or downloaded a report.

Start with the inquiry entries
Look for the date, company name and inquiry type. If the entry is identified as consumer-initiated or soft, it is not a score-lowering inquiry under FICO’s guidance. If it is hard, ask which application or authorization produced it. An unfamiliar hard inquiry deserves investigation because it could indicate an application you forgot, a reporting error or possible identity theft.
Review the rest of the report
Check account balances, payment status, newly opened accounts, reported limits and other changes shown in the file. The material available here supports reviewing the report and inquiry entries, but it does not establish the cause of any particular person’s score movement. Without examining the relevant report and score details, no one can responsibly diagnose why a specific score changed.
Compare the same score type
A consumer may see different numbers when switching between credit bureaus, FICO versions or dates. Before concluding that a score fell, note the bureau, model name and date attached to each number. Comparing unlike scores can look like a drop even when the underlying file has not changed in the same way.
Can a soft inquiry appear on your credit report?
Yes. Soft inquiries may be listed on the consumer-facing report. That record documents that a report was accessed, but FICO does not count consumer-initiated checks in its scores. Lenders generally do not see the same soft-inquiry details when reviewing a report for an application.

This is why two statements can both be true: “There is an inquiry on my report” and “The inquiry did not lower my FICO score.” The report is an activity history; the score is a calculation based on information the scoring model is designed to use.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common situations and what they usually mean
| Situation | Likely inquiry category | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| You open a consumer service to view your own FICO score. | Soft inquiry. | Confirm that the service is providing consumer access rather than taking a credit application. |
| You download your own credit report. | Soft inquiry. | Check the report’s inquiry section; its appearance does not make it score-lowering. |
| You submit a credit-card application. | Often a hard inquiry. | Read the application disclosure and later verify the inquiry on your report. |
| You apply for a personal loan or another form of new credit. | May be a hard inquiry. | Identify the lender’s inquiry entry and the date it was recorded. |
| A financial app says it can show an offer or your approval odds. | Not automatically determined from the app’s wording. | Look for the explicit soft- or hard-inquiry disclosure before proceeding. |
| You find an inquiry from a company you do not recognize. | Could be soft or hard. | Check the classification, contact the company through a trusted channel and dispute inaccurate information with the appropriate credit bureau. |
How long inquiries matter
For hard inquiries, keep two separate dates in mind. The record may remain on a credit report for up to two years, but FICO scores consider inquiries from only the most recent 12 months, according to myFICO. These periods answer different questions: the first is about report visibility; the second is about the scoring window.
Do not infer that every inquiry older than 12 months disappears from the report, or that every inquiry still displayed is still affecting the score. Read the date and type of each entry and apply the appropriate period.

Ways to avoid an unintended hard inquiry
- Ask before authorizing a check: “Will this be a soft inquiry or a hard inquiry?” Get the answer in the provider’s disclosure, not only in a marketing headline.
- Separate information requests from applications: If you only want to monitor your file, use a consumer report or score-access function rather than starting an application.
- Review consent screens: A request for permission to obtain a report for underwriting is different from permission to display your existing consumer report.
- Keep records: Save confirmation emails and dates so you can match a later inquiry to the action you took.
- Monitor for unfamiliar entries: An unexpected hard inquiry can be a warning sign that needs prompt follow-up.
Do you need to pay to check a FICO score?
No. Paying for a score service can be an optional way to obtain a FICO score, model details or a report in one place, but payment is not what makes a self-check safe. The determining factor is that the check is consumer-initiated through an authorized channel and is treated as a soft inquiry.
Best Value
Free report access and paid score access also serve different purposes. A credit report lets you inspect the underlying accounts and inquiry records. A FICO score is a numerical output from a particular scoring model and date. If you are investigating a change, the report is essential context even when you also purchase a score.
Questions to ask when a score seems lower
- Did I only view my own score or report, or did I submit an application?
- Does the report label the entry soft or hard?
- Is the inquiry within the 12-month period FICO considers?
- Is the score I am comparing from the same bureau, FICO version and date?
- Did any account or balance information change around the same time?
- Is there an unfamiliar inquiry or account that should be investigated?
These questions keep the diagnosis tied to verifiable report information. They also prevent the common mistake of blaming the act of checking merely because the check and the score change happened close together.
Bottom line
Checking your own FICO score or report through an authorized consumer service does not lower your FICO score; it is a soft inquiry. A lender’s check associated with a credit application may be a hard inquiry and may affect the score. If your number changes, inspect the inquiry classification, the report dates and the rest of the credit file before drawing a conclusion.
