First find out where Windows stops seeing the SSD: File Explorer, Disk Management, Device Manager, or your PC’s UEFI/BIOS. If it appears in Disk Management, the issue may be its status, partition, or drive letter. If it is missing there too, check the connection and device recognition before considering hardware or firmware. Don’t initialize or format a drive that may contain files you need.
Find where the SSD disappears
A missing File Explorer icon does not by itself mean the SSD has failed. Check the layers in order and note whether the drive is internal or external, new or previously used, and whether it is the Windows boot drive.

- Open File Explorer and check whether the SSD has a drive letter.
- Open Disk Management: right-click Start and select Disk Management, search for “Create and format hard disk partitions,” or run
diskmgmt.msc. - If the disk is not listed there, open Device Manager and look for the drive or an error-marked controller.
- If Windows cannot see an internal SSD, check whether it appears in UEFI/BIOS using the instructions for your PC or motherboard.
These screens identify different problems; a drive-letter change cannot fix a disk that firmware does not detect.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf the SSD appears in Disk Management
Confirm the disk’s identity and capacity before making changes. Then match its status to the appropriate action:

- MORE COMPATIBLE THAN EVER: 870 EVO has been compatibility tested for major host systems and applications, including chipsets, motherboards, NAS, and video recording devices. Interface- SATA 6GB/s, compatible with SATA 3GB/s and SATA 1.5GB/s interfaces
- Offline: Select the correct disk and choose Online.
- Existing volume with no drive letter: Assign a letter only after confirming that you have selected the intended volume.
- Unallocated space on a new, blank disk: Create a new simple volume only if there is no data to preserve.
- New blank disk that needs initialization: Initialize it only after verifying that it is the intended new disk. Microsoft describes GPT as the choice for modern UEFI systems that need large drives or more than four partitions; MBR is for older hardware or operating systems without UEFI support.
Do not initialize a disk that previously held files as a generic repair attempt. Microsoft warns, “Formatting a volume will destroy any data on the partition.” A quick format creates a new file table but does not fully overwrite or erase the volume. See Microsoft’s Disk Management guidance before preparing a disk.
If an external SSD is missing
- Connect the drive directly to a supported PC port rather than through a hub or dock.
- Try a known-good cable suited to the drive. A USB-C cable or port may not support the expected functionality.
- Check whether the enclosure or adapter supports the SSD’s interface and physical size.
- Open Device Manager, inspect the device’s status and any error code, then follow the matching Microsoft USB-C troubleshooting guidance or Device Manager guidance.
Enclosures can affect how some drives are reported in particular Windows features. For example, Microsoft notes that some enclosures report drives as removable or hide individual disk identities, which affects eligibility for Storage Spaces; that does not establish the cause of every missing SSD. See Microsoft’s Storage Spaces guidance.

If the SSD is absent from Disk Management
Check Device Manager for the drive or an error-marked controller. For ordinary driver updates, Microsoft recommends Windows Update; if a driver is needed, use the PC, motherboard, or drive maker’s official support site rather than an unverified download. Consult the computer manufacturer for model-specific guidance on device recognition, chipset drivers, and firmware settings.

Microsoft’s separate advice about checking BIOS activation and chipset drivers concerns optical drives, so it should not be treated as SSD-specific proof. The practical next step is to follow the support guidance for your particular computer and SSD.

If UEFI/BIOS does not detect the SSD
Use your PC or motherboard manual to locate the correct firmware screen and check whether the drive is listed. Menus and procedures vary, so do not toggle storage settings or rely on generic key presses without model-specific instructions.
For an M.2 SSD, confirm that the drive matches the socket and that the computer supports that drive type; the M.2 shape alone does not establish interface compatibility. Follow your device’s service instructions if reseating the drive. Crucial’s M.2 installation guide says not to force a drive that does not fit and advises reseating it if BIOS does not recognize it. If firmware still cannot detect the SSD, contact the PC or motherboard manufacturer.

If the missing SSD is your Windows boot drive
A boot problem is not the same as an SSD that is merely missing from File Explorer. If the drive is absent from firmware, a Windows drive-letter change will not address that detection problem. Do not format, initialize, or reinstall Windows as an initial detection fix. Use the PC maker’s firmware and recovery guidance, and preserve any important files and encryption recovery information.
