How to Fix an Ocarina of Time Boss Glitch When It Fails

If an Ocarina of Time boss glitch leaves Link frozen, leaves the boss invulnerable, or removes a required weapon, there is usually no in-game repair. Reset the game, reload your latest save, and enter the boss room again without repeating the trigger. The documented Bongo Bongo bomb setup can interrupt the entrance cutscene and softlock the fight; the documented Ganon setup can make the Master Sword disappear and leave the encounter unwinnable.

The correct recovery: reset, reload, and retry

A boss-room glitch is a runtime failure, not normally a damaged save file. Once Link is trapped in a cutscene, cannot move, or no longer has the weapon required to finish the encounter, continuing to press buttons will not restore the missing state. Stop attempting the glitched fight and restart the game.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Confirm that the encounter is actually stuck. A long animation, an unusual camera angle, or a boss taking reduced damage is not automatically a softlock. Treat it as a softlock when Link cannot regain control, the entrance or defeat sequence cannot advance, or the required weapon has disappeared.
  2. Reset the game using the restart or reset control for your release. The Bongo Bongo warning specifically says a reset is required. The Ganon setup likewise cannot restore the Master Sword during that encounter.
  3. Load the latest save. Resetting discards the unsaved boss-room state and returns you to the most recent saved position. If you saved before entering the dungeon or before beginning the final sequence, that save is the point from which to retry.
  4. Re-enter the fight using the intended sequence. Do not repeat the bomb interruption at Bongo Bongo, and do not activate a spell while Link is touching the Master Sword in the Ganon setup.

If the game reaches the title or file-select screen normally after the reset, the recovery is complete. If the same save repeatedly loads into a frozen room, make sure you selected an earlier save rather than resuming a suspended game state, then perform a full restart and load again. The documented failure cases are encounter softlocks; they do not provide a menu command that repairs the boss while Link remains inside the glitched state.

How to tell a difficult fight from a softlock

Before resetting, distinguish an intended boss mechanic from a broken encounter. This prevents losing progress simply because a phase is unfamiliar.

What you observe Likely meaning What to do
Link can move, target, open the inventory, and the boss continues its normal pattern The fight is probably still active, even if damage windows are easy to miss. Continue using the boss’s intended mechanics.
Link is held in an entrance or attack cutscene and control never returns Softlock caused by an interrupted sequence. Reset and reload the latest save.
The boss reacts to hits but the required weapon or item is gone State needed to finish the encounter was overwritten or skipped. Reset; do not expect the item to reappear during that attempt.
The camera is unusual but Link can still act and the encounter advances Visual oddity or unfamiliar positioning, not necessarily a lock. Wait for the next normal state or test movement before resetting.
The same trigger causes the same failure after reloading The setup is reproducible on that release or timing. Stop using that setup and follow the standard boss route.

The key test is control and progression, not whether the room looks strange. A boss can be hard, slow, or visually unusual while remaining playable. A softlock is the combination of lost control or a missing required state and no way for the encounter to advance.

Fixing the Bongo Bongo bomb glitch

What the documented setup does

The Zelda Wiki glitch guide describes taking out a bomb before Link reaches the bottom of the hole. When the bomb explodes, it damages Bongo Bongo and starts the attack pattern before the normal appearance cutscene has completed. A related GameFAQs answer describes shield-dropping a bomb before landing with the same result: the boss is damaged immediately, the appearance sequence is interrupted, and Link remains stuck in the cutscene.

Because the appearance sequence and the boss’s active attack state are being triggered at the same time, the room can end up waiting for two incompatible states. Link cannot move, the cutscene does not finish, and the fight cannot be completed from that attempt. This is not a matter of finding a hidden button prompt or waiting longer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recovery steps

  1. Stop pressing attack, shield, or item buttons once Link is trapped in the entrance sequence.
  2. Reset the game through the control provided by the Nintendo 64 release, Nintendo Switch Online software, or the platform on which you are playing.
  3. Load the latest save that places Link before the failed Bongo Bongo attempt.
  4. Return to the room without taking out or shield-dropping a bomb before the entrance cutscene has finished.
  5. Allow control to return fully, then fight Bongo Bongo with the ordinary sequence.

The normal Bongo Bongo sequence

The normal fight uses the room’s intended mechanics rather than an interrupted entrance. Hover Boots prevent the drum tremors from launching Link, so equip them for the movement phase. Shoot the hands with arrows to freeze them. When the hands are disabled, use the Lens of Truth to reveal Bongo Bongo’s body and attack the exposed target. If the boss returns to its regular pattern, repeat those steps instead of trying to reproduce the bomb setup.

The important prevention rule is timing: do not let a bomb explode before the appearance cutscene completes. A bomb that damages the boss early is not a shortcut you can safely continue after; in the documented setup it is the event that creates the softlock.

Fixing the Ganon Master Sword disappearance

Why the sword vanishes

The documented Ganon failure occurs after Ganon knocks the Master Sword away. If Link equips Din’s Fire, Farore’s Wind, or Nayru’s Love and activates the spell while touching the sword, the spell animation can play while the sword animation does not. The Master Sword disappears instead of returning to the playable state.

The sword is required to defeat Ganon in that encounter. The Zelda Wiki guide states that the sword cannot be restored during the glitched fight; the only recovery is to reset and fight Ganon again. Switching items, leaving the arena, or waiting for another phase does not repair the missing weapon.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recovery steps

  1. Once the sword has disappeared and the fight cannot be completed, stop attempting to continue that encounter.
  2. Reset the game and load the latest save before the failed Ganon sequence.
  3. Repeat the opening sequence and let the Master Sword be knocked away normally.
  4. Do not activate Din’s Fire, Farore’s Wind, or Nayru’s Love while Link is touching the sword.
  5. Pick up and use the Master Sword through the ordinary sequence before continuing the battle.

How to avoid repeating the trigger

Keep spell activation separate from the sword pickup. After Ganon knocks the sword away, move Link clear of the sword, make sure no spell activation is being buffered, and approach it as a normal item interaction. The risk is the overlap between touching the sword and activating one of the three named spells, not the mere possession of those spells in the inventory.

If the sword is present, Link can move, and the battle progresses through its expected phases, the encounter has not suffered this documented failure. Do not reset merely because the sword is temporarily out of reach during the intended sequence; reset only when it has actually vanished or control and progression have stopped.

Release and platform differences

Glitch instructions are tied to a particular release. The original Nintendo 64 game, the Nintendo Switch Online version, and Ocarina of Time 3D are not interchangeable targets for timing-sensitive setups.

Release What is established Practical implication
Original Nintendo 64 release The Bongo Bongo bomb warning and the Ganon Master Sword disappearance setup are documented against the original game. The standard boss mechanics described above apply to this release. Use the original-release instructions, but avoid both triggers when retrying.
Nintendo Switch Online version A GamesRadar report dated October 13, 2026 says a newer bottled-item technique was reported to work on Switch Online and the original cartridge. That is a community report, not a universal compatibility guarantee for every glitch. Do not assume an N64 timing or exploit behaves identically on the service version. Reset and reload remain the appropriate response to a softlock.
Ocarina of Time 3D This is a separate release with added instructional videos and a modified Water Temple. Community glitch guides primarily document the original game. Do not apply an original-release glitch guide to 3D and expect the same trigger, timing, or result.

When asking whether a fix “works,” identify the exact release first. A technique may be documented for a cartridge but unverified on a service version, or may depend on code and timing that were changed for the 3D remake. The reset-and-reload recovery is the general response to an encounter softlock, but the trigger you must avoid depends on the release and setup.

The newer bottled-item damage technique is not a repair

GamesRadar reported on October 13, 2026 that speedrunner ZFG described a technique using a bottled item as a lingering hitbox to overwrite damage values. The report quotes two major uses: beating Volvagia without the hammer and defeating Ganondorf without light arrows. ZFG also warned that many minor details make it unsuitable as an automatic timesaver in every run.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

This technique belongs to optional speedrunning experimentation, not boss-state recovery. It may change how damage is applied before or during a planned attempt, but it does not restore Link’s control after the Bongo Bongo cutscene lock and does not recreate a Master Sword that has disappeared in the Ganon setup. If a run has already entered one of those failed states, reset and reload rather than trying to layer another exploit on top of it.

The same report says the bottled-item technique was reported on the original cartridge and Nintendo Switch Online. “Reported to work” is narrower than a guarantee: timing, setup details, and other conditions can matter, and the report does not establish compatibility with Ocarina of Time 3D. Treat it as a run-specific exploit, not a universal fix.

A retry checklist that prevents another softlock

  • Identify the release: Nintendo 64, Nintendo Switch Online, or Ocarina of Time 3D.
  • Load a pre-fight save: verify that the file places Link before the failed boss sequence.
  • Remove the trigger: no early bomb detonation at Bongo Bongo; no spell activation while touching the displaced Master Sword.
  • Wait for control: at Bongo Bongo, let the entrance cutscene finish before using items or attacking.
  • Use intended equipment: Hover Boots, arrows, and the Lens of Truth for Bongo Bongo; the Master Sword through its ordinary pickup sequence for Ganon.
  • Save normally after recovery: once the boss is defeated and Link is back in a stable game state, create the next normal save available in your release.

Do not treat a successful damage registration as proof that a glitch is safe. The Bongo Bongo setup damages the boss and still softlocks Link. The Ganon setup displays the spell and still removes the weapon needed to win. A shortcut is only useful when it leaves both player control and the required progression state intact.

Troubleshooting branches

Link is frozen but the boss is visible

Wait only long enough to distinguish a normal animation from a stalled sequence. If control does not return and the entrance or attack cutscene never advances, reset. The Bongo Bongo bomb case specifically leaves Link stuck in a cutscene.

The boss is damaged but cannot be defeated

Check whether the damage happened before the boss’s normal appearance or whether a required weapon is missing. Early Bongo Bongo damage points to the bomb interruption; a missing Master Sword points to the Ganon spell overlap. In either case, reload rather than searching the room for a second trigger.

The reset returns to the same bad room

Choose the latest ordinary save instead of resuming a suspended runtime state. If the platform offers both a software restart and a resume option, restart first, then load the file from the normal file-selection screen. The objective is to discard the unsaved encounter state.

The instructions do not reproduce on your version

That is expected for some release differences. Confirm whether you are using the original Nintendo 64 game, Nintendo Switch Online, or Ocarina of Time 3D. Original-release community guides are not a compatibility promise for the 3D remake, and the bottled-item report is not evidence that every other glitch behaves the same way on Switch Online.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You want to keep a speedrun attempt

Separate a planned exploit from a failed state. The bottled-item technique can be part of a route when its setup is understood, but once Link is frozen or a required item has vanished, preserving the attempt by continuing is not a recovery method. Reset according to the route’s rules and restart from the last valid save or practice state.

What cannot be repaired in the glitched encounter

  • A Bongo Bongo entrance cutscene interrupted by the documented bomb timing cannot be completed by waiting.
  • A Master Sword removed by the documented Ganon spell overlap cannot be restored through the inventory or another arena interaction.
  • The newer bottled-item damage technique does not repair either failure; it is an optional way to manipulate damage values before a fight or during a planned run.
  • Changing from the original game to another release does not repair the current runtime state. It only changes which instructions may apply to a future attempt.

The reliable boundary is simple: if the current encounter has lost control, progression, or a required weapon, abandon that runtime state and reload. The save file is the recovery point; the boss room itself is not.
