To fix an ITC mismatch, first identify the exact document and classify the difference: it may be a period-timing issue, a supplier-reported error, an amendment or credit note, an IMS action, a duplicate, or an eligibility question. You cannot edit GSTR-2B yourself. Reconcile the statement to your books, get supplier data corrected where needed, review IMS and later statements, then decide what credit you are legally entitled to report in GSTR-3B.
What GSTR-2B does—and what it does not prove
GSTR-2B is an auto-drafted, static, read-only ITC statement. It is based on supplier and Input Service Distributor (ISD) filings, along with import information received from ICEGATE. A recipient cannot add or correct a supplier document in the statement directly. The GST portal’s FAQ on viewing GSTR-2B advises taxpayers to reconcile it with their own records and books of account.

The statement includes summaries of ITC available and ITC not available, but its categories do not settle every legal eligibility question. A document appearing in GSTR-2B does not, by itself, guarantee that you may claim the credit: other conditions and restrictions under the Act and Rules may apply. Assess eligibility separately and make any required reversal.

Freeze the period and preserve the records
Download the GSTR-2B for the period you are checking in Excel or JSON from the GST portal, and compare it with your purchase register and books for the same period. Save the downloaded statement and a dated copy of your reconciliation. Keeping each version makes it easier to trace a later supplier amendment or a document that appears in a subsequent statement.

Match documents before comparing totals
Compare records using the supplier’s GSTIN, invoice or debit-note number and date, document type, taxable value, and tax amounts. Check credit notes and amendments as well as original invoices. A total-only comparison can hide an omitted document, a duplicate, or an amendment that changes the net amount.
Do not offset unrelated differences against each other. Keep each variance identifiable in your workpaper, including its cause, the period involved, any supplier communication, and the action taken.

Classify the mismatch and take the corresponding action
| What you find | What to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Invoice or debit note is in your books but absent from GSTR-2B | Check the supplier’s filing timing and whether the document appears in a later open statement. | If it is a timing lag, track it in the later period. If it remains absent or was omitted, contact the supplier with the document details and request the applicable filing correction. |
| Document appears, but its GSTIN, number, date, taxable value, or tax differs | Compare the statement with the supplier document and identify the exact field that differs. Pay particular attention to tax amount and place of supply. | Ask the supplier to correct inaccurate reported data through the applicable GSTR-1, GSTR-1A, or IFF route. Do not try to change GSTR-2B yourself. |
| One document appears more than once, or a book entry seems duplicated | Match document identifiers and check whether an amendment or a separate credit/debit note explains the additional row. | Resolve the duplicate at document level before using totals to prepare the return; do not claim credit twice for the same document. |
| An original document has been amended, or a credit note is present | Review both the original and revised document details, the period in which each appears, and the amendment’s differential amount. | Reconcile the amendment against the original rather than treating the revised row as an unrelated invoice. Reflect the applicable net effect in your workpaper. |
| The difference concerns imports, an ISD document, or reverse charge | Separate the record by category and compare it with the relevant source records and the corresponding GSTR-2B summary. | Do not treat a category difference as a supplier-invoice error by default. For reverse charge, account for tax due as required and assess the related credit under the applicable rules. |
| The document’s IMS state or a later action may affect the statement | Review whether the record was accepted, rejected, pending, or deemed accepted, and whether an action or supplier amendment occurred after draft GSTR-2B generation. | Follow the current GST portal advisory for any required GSTR-2B recomputation and period sequencing before filing the relevant GSTR-3B. |
| The document is present, but credit may be legally restricted | Assess the transaction against applicable ITC conditions and restrictions, not only the statement’s category. | Claim only the amount for which you are eligible and reverse credit where the Act or Rules require it. |
Check whether the difference is only a timing lag
A supplier filing received after the relevant cut-off may flow into a later open GSTR-2B instead of the statement you are currently reconciling. The GST portal FAQ says monthly GSTR-2B is generated on the 14th of the succeeding month; for quarterly recipients, it is generated on the 14th of the succeeding month of the quarter. The FAQ also explains that documents filed after a cut-off move to the next open statement.

Handle supplier errors and amendments at the source
For a missing or incorrect supplier-reported document, send the supplier its GSTIN, the invoice or debit-note number and date, and the precise discrepancy. Ask them to correct the data using the applicable GSTR-1, GSTR-1A, or IFF filing route. The e-invoice portal also advises promptly reporting discrepancies such as tax amount or place of supply to the supplier because they can create ITC risk.
After a correction, check the subsequent statement and reconcile the revised record to the original. The GSTR-2B FAQ explains that an amendment summary can show the differential amount (amended minus original), while document details show revised information with reference to the original. Therefore, a period’s summary may not resemble the full revised invoice value: inspect the amendment detail and original document together.

Review IMS before relying on the statement
IMS action status can affect what appears in GSTR-2B. The GST portal’s revised IMS advisory describes deemed acceptance when no action is taken by the time GSTR-2B is generated. It also describes cases where a later action or change requires GSTR-2B to be recomputed, and sequencing rules for original and amended records across periods.
- Review the relevant record’s IMS status, including whether it is accepted, rejected, pending, or deemed accepted.
- Check whether you or the supplier changed the record or its action after draft GSTR-2B generation.
- If the current advisory requires it, recompute GSTR-2B before using the statement for the return.
- Observe the advisory’s original/amended-record sequencing requirements and confirm that the prior-period GSTR-3B condition for sequential GSTR-2B generation is met where applicable.
IMS does not replace the supplier-correction process or your own eligibility assessment. Follow the current GST portal advisory for the period and action involved rather than assuming an earlier draft statement still reflects the latest status.

Make the GSTR-3B decision only after reconciliation
Once each variance has a documented cause, map the eligible amount to the relevant GSTR-3B treatment using the applicable categories and current return guidance. Some system-populated GSTR-3B values are editable, according to the GSTR-2B FAQ; if you edit a value, retain a workpaper that explains the adjustment and its source. Do not use an unexplained net figure, claim a document twice, or leave tax due under reverse charge unaccounted for.
For a disputed invoice or a question about whether a particular transaction meets statutory ITC conditions, the answer depends on the transaction facts and applicable current law. The statement alone cannot resolve that question; seek qualified tax advice where necessary.
