If your iPhone screen is visible but ignores taps, first clean and dry it, unplug accessories, remove the case and screen protector, then restart the phone. If the iPhone is frozen or the display is black, use the force-restart sequence for your model. When these checks do not restore touch, Apple says the device may need service.
First, identify what is happening
Notice whether the display is visible while touch fails, whether taps work only intermittently or in one area, or whether the screen is black and the phone appears frozen. Apple’s touchscreen guidance addresses overly sensitive or intermittent response; a black or frozen phone may need the separate restart procedure. A symptom alone does not establish the cause.

Try the basic touchscreen checks
- Restart the iPhone. If it responds well enough to use the on-screen controls, restart it normally. If it is frozen or the display is black, follow the model-specific force-restart steps below.
- Clean and dry the screen. Apple advises making sure the screen is clean and free of debris or water. A microfiber cloth can help with wiping, but it is only a cleaning aid—not a fix for a damaged display or hardware fault. Follow the care guidance for your device and avoid unsupported cleaning methods. Apple’s touchscreen troubleshooting guidance
- Disconnect accessories. Unplug Lightning or USB-C accessories and check whether touch response improves. If it does, Apple suggests trying another outlet, cable or charger.
- Remove the case and screen protector. Check the bare screen again to see whether touch works more consistently.
Force restart a frozen or black-screen iPhone
Use a force restart when the phone is frozen or its display is black—not as a touchscreen calibration step. The button sequence depends on the model family. Apple’s current model-specific instructions are on its restart an unresponsive iPhone page.

- Quickly press and release the volume-up button.
- Quickly press and release the volume-down button.
- Press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.

Press and hold the Home button and side or top button together until the Apple logo appears.
If the iPhone does not turn on, Apple advises charging it for one hour and then trying again. This applies to a phone that will not turn on, not to an otherwise working screen with failed touch.

When the touchscreen still does not respond
If touch remains unreliable after the basic checks, Apple says you might need to set up service. A visibly damaged display or a persistent unresponsive area is a reason to stop troubleshooting and arrange an inspection rather than assume a particular fault.

Apple offers in-person service through an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider, as well as a mail-in option. Apple needs to inspect the iPhone to provide a personalized estimate; Authorized Service Providers may set their own fees and provide their own estimates.
