Match the failure to the right fix: update Atlas if a map is black, import map files through Atlas’s Asset Manager instead of copying them into the atlas-vtt folder, and repair missing token-image references from the affected map. A blank player view is a separate issue: open a scene and send it to the player view again.
These steps apply to Atlas VTT, not Obsidian’s separate Maps plugin. Atlas’s installation guide, reviewed October 4, 2026, requires desktop Obsidian 1.8.7 or newer and says Atlas does not run on Obsidian mobile apps.

First, identify what is not displaying
Atlas documents different remedies for a black map, a map image that never appeared after a manual copy, a token with missing artwork, and an empty player window. Use the symptom that matches your situation rather than treating them all as image-loading problems.

Check Atlas and Obsidian support first
Atlas’s install guide specifies desktop Obsidian 1.8.7 or newer on Windows, macOS, or Linux; it says mobile apps are unsupported. Install or update Atlas through Obsidian’s Community plugins settings. If Atlas is enabled but its dashboard does not open automatically, open it from Obsidian’s command palette. If the map stays black
- In Obsidian, open Settings → Community plugins and check for an Atlas update. Atlas’s FAQ says older versions could show a black map after some imports.
- If the map remains black after updating, check that hardware acceleration is enabled in Obsidian’s general settings.
- Check whether the computer’s graphics card drivers need attention.
Atlas lists acceleration and graphics drivers as follow-up checks after updating; it does not say they resolve every black-map case. Follow the symptom-specific steps in the Atlas FAQ.
If a map image copied into atlas-vtt does not show
Copying an image file directly into the atlas-vtt folder is not Atlas’s supported map-import workflow; the plugin does not pick up manually copied files automatically. Instead, open Asset Manager, click +, and choose Add Map. The Obsidian plugin listing also describes importing a map image through Asset Manager and creating a scene from it: Atlas VTT on Obsidian Community Plugins.

If tokens show no image—or never appear
A token is on the map but its image is missing
- Open the affected map.
- In Obsidian’s command palette, run Clean up missing assets in current map.
- Review Atlas’s list of missing assets and remove the dead references.
Atlas says removals can be undone with Ctrl+Z on Windows/Linux or Cmd+Z on macOS. This cleans up broken references; it does not restore an image file that was deleted. See the Atlas troubleshooting instructions.
A token has not been created or placed
- Open a scene and press
Ato open Asset Manager. - Choose Create Token and provide the image file or files.
- To place a token, use the Characters tab and double-click it, or choose Spawn on Map.
For a token imported from a statblock, the creature’s note needs art linked in its image field. If the image is remote, save it in the vault, link the local file, and scan again. Atlas’s guide covers token creation and placement: Put tokens on the map.

If the player view is black or empty
A blank player window does not necessarily mean the map is missing in the GM editor. Open the scene, then use its eye control or run Send current map to player view from the command palette. If Obsidian was restarted, open the scene and send it again to restore the player view, as described in the Atlas FAQ.

Report the issue through Atlas’s in-app Report an issue command, or open Settings → Atlas VTT → Help and feedback. The official Obsidian plugin listing says this report flow fills in version information and sends the report to the Atlas team. Include the exact symptom, your Atlas and Obsidian versions, operating system, and whether the image file still exists in the vault; these details distinguish rendering, import, reference, and player-view problems.
