To get an iPhone to install iOS automatically overnight, open Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates and turn on Automatically Install. Apple says the phone installs an available update overnight when it is charging and connected to Wi-Fi. If only Automatically Download is enabled, iOS can download the update without installing it.
1. Enable automatic installation—not just downloading
Open Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates. Turn on Automatically Install. Apple describes this setting as downloading and installing an update overnight while the iPhone is charging and connected to Wi-Fi. With automatic installation off, Automatically Download can still fetch the update, but downloading alone does not install it.

2. Leave the iPhone charging
Connect the iPhone to power before bed and leave it connected. Charging is one of Apple’s stated conditions for an overnight automatic installation. If you are troubleshooting a wireless update that has already started, Apple also advises keeping the phone connected to power.

3. Check the Wi-Fi connection
Automatic overnight installation requires Wi-Fi. Confirm the iPhone is connected to a working network rather than relying on cellular data. If the update is taking a long time to download, Apple recommends using Wi-Fi and avoiding other downloads at the same time.
If you see a message that the update server cannot be reached or that the update cannot be verified, try again on the same network; if the problem continues, try another network. See Apple’s wireless update troubleshooting steps.

4. Confirm an update is available for your iPhone
Go to Settings > General > Software Update to see the installed iOS version and whether an update is offered. An iPhone cannot install an update that is not available for it, and Apple offers only updates compatible with the device. Check Apple’s current compatibility information for the iOS version you want; model support can vary by release.

Insufficient storage can prevent a wireless update. Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage and review the available space. Apple suggests enabling Offload Unused Apps or removing apps you no longer need. Offloading frees space while retaining app documents and data; you can reinstall an offloaded app later.

6. Start the installation manually
If the update has downloaded but has not installed, open Settings > General > Software Update and choose Update Now or Update Tonight, if offered. If it has not downloaded, choose Download and Install for an available update. Apple’s instructions are in its iPhone user guide.
7. Delete a failed download and download it again
If installation still fails, remove the downloaded update and try a fresh download:

- Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Find the iOS update in the list and tap it.
- Tap Delete Update.
- Return to Settings > General > Software Update and download the update again.
Apple includes this recovery step in its update troubleshooting guidance.
8. Update with a Mac or PC if wireless updates keep failing
If another Wi-Fi network and a fresh download do not resolve the issue, Apple recommends updating with a computer. Use a Mac or iTunes as appropriate for your computer, follow Apple’s iPhone or iPad update instructions, and back up the iPhone before updating.

Why an update may not install on a particular night
Apple describes the conditions for overnight installation but does not promise a specific installation hour or guarantee that every update will install on a particular night. One missed night does not by itself show that the feature is broken. Check the setting, power, Wi-Fi, compatibility, storage, and update status in that order; if needed, install manually or use a computer.
