Which VPN is better for privacy?
Both providers make no-logs claims, but those claims should be weighed as provider statements rather than guarantees of anonymity. Proton says it is based in Switzerland and that its no-logs policy applies to free and paid users. NordVPN says it is based in Panama and reports six independent reviews of its no-logs policy; its page says the sixth review took place in 2025. That count does not establish that all six reports are publicly available.

Proton’s open-source apps let others inspect the app code, and the company says its apps are regularly audited by security professionals. NordVPN’s stated review history is another transparency signal. An audit or review is bounded by its scope, date, and access to evidence; neither jurisdiction nor a no-logs policy proves that a service makes you anonymous, stops tracking by websites or devices, or protects against every legal request.

Different approaches to routing and encryption
Proton’s Secure Core sends traffic through more than one Proton server before it exits to the internet. Proton presents this as protection against certain network-based attacks. NordLynx uses WireGuard with double NAT, which NordVPN says avoids storing identifiable data on the VPN server. These are different engineering choices, not evidence that one automatically fits every threat model. Proton’s feature descriptions and NordVPN’s encryption information explain the providers’ claims.
Which is faster?
NordVPN has a slight edge in the cited RTINGS comparison: 7.2/10 for speed versus 7.0/10 for Proton VPN. The gap is small, and RTINGS’ score reflects its own testing methodology. Your result can vary with your location, chosen server, device, internet connection, and network conditions. NordVPN calls NordLynx its fastest secure VPN solution, but that is a provider claim, not a universal independent result.

Which is cheaper, including renewal?
A fair price comparison requires the same billing period, region, and equivalent features. Proton offers a free plan as well as paid options such as VPN Plus and Proton Unlimited. The retrieved Proton pricing page did not provide usable dollar figures, so there is not enough evidence here to name a current price winner against NordVPN.

Which is better for streaming?
Neither service is established as the universal streaming winner by the evidence available here. Proton promotes streaming support, and NordVPN also makes broad streaming claims, but access can vary by platform, country, catalog, and date. There is no dated, reproducible side-by-side test here for a specific service and location. Before choosing, verify the platform and country you actually need rather than assuming a general VPN feature guarantees access.

Which is better for P2P and torrenting?
Proton advertises P2P-optimized servers, and RTINGS gives Proton the higher torrenting score in its comparison. RTINGS lists P2P support for both services. Those facts do not guarantee higher throughput on your connection or establish that sharing a particular file is legal. If you need inbound connections or port forwarding, confirm that the feature is supported on the current plan and app you intend to use.
