Find the app’s executable
Locate the .exe file for the game or app that has the fullscreen problem. If you normally open it from a shortcut, use the program file that the shortcut launches rather than changing properties on an unrelated app.

Change the fullscreen optimization setting
- Right-click the affected app’s executable and select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Check Disable fullscreen optimizations.
- Select Apply, then close the Properties dialog.
These steps are given in a Microsoft Q&A community answer dated August 1, 2020: Microsoft Q&A guidance. Another Microsoft Q&A result describes applying the checkbox to a specific game’s executable, which also supports treating the setting as app-specific.

Retest the app
Reopen the affected app and check whether the fullscreen issue has changed. The setting is a troubleshooting option, not a guaranteed fix: the cited Q&A guidance does not establish that it resolves every fullscreen problem or improves performance in general.

What this setting does—and what is established
The available guidance establishes where to find the checkbox and how to apply it. It does not explain the feature’s technical implementation or establish broad effects on performance, lag, display scaling, or other apps. Treat any result as specific to the app you changed rather than assuming the setting applies system-wide.
