If your iPhone won’t charge on a pad, first confirm that the iPhone supports wireless charging, then check the pad’s power and phone placement. A case or object, movement, temperature, or a connected USB cable can also prevent wireless charging. Work through these checks before assuming the phone or charger is broken.
Check that your iPhone and charger are compatible
Apple supports Qi wireless charging on iPhone 8 and later. Confirm your exact iPhone model and the charger’s compatibility; for a particular pad, consult its manufacturer’s instructions. A Qi-certified charger is not necessarily identical to every other Qi charger in performance. Apple says many Qi-certified chargers can charge compatible iPhones at up to 7.5 watts with the latest iOS version, but that conditional figure is not a guarantee for every phone and pad. MagSafe is an option, not a requirement for all iPhones. Its magnetic alignment and charging behavior depend on the iPhone model. Apple says its MagSafe charger can also charge other Qi-compatible iPhones, though power and charging times differ. Apple’s MagSafe instructions describe its use.

Make sure the pad has power
Reconnect the pad to its power source and check that the cable and adapter are firmly connected. Use the adapter supplied with the charger or one its manufacturer recommends. If the pad’s indicator does not show power, consult its instructions before troubleshooting the iPhone.

Center the iPhone and keep it still
Set the phone face up at the pad’s center, or at the position marked by the charger maker. Apple says the iPhone should begin charging a few seconds after placement. Check whether the charging icon appears. If it does not, reposition the phone once and look again.
Movement can break the charging connection. A vibration from a notification may shift a phone that is resting loosely on the pad, so make sure it can stay in place.

Remove cases and objects that may interfere
Take off a thick, metal, or battery case and test the phone directly on the pad. Remove anything between the charger and iPhone, including wallet cards, badges, magnetic mounts, passports, and key fobs. Cases or mounts can interfere with charging; magnetic strips and RFID chips may also be damaged by wireless charging.

Check the iPhone’s temperature
If the iPhone is unusually hot or cold, charging may slow or pause until the phone returns to a normal operating temperature. Move it away from heat or cold and allow it to cool or warm naturally. A temperature-related pause is protective behavior and does not, by itself, show that the charging pad is faulty.

Check whether a cable is connected
If the iPhone is connected to a computer or USB power adapter, Apple says it charges through that wired connection rather than wirelessly. Disconnect the USB cable if you want to test charging on the pad.
Compare charging methods and decide what to do next
- Restart the iPhone. Then try the pad again with the phone centered and the case removed.
- Check the charger’s power connections. Reseat the cable and adapter, and use the manufacturer-recommended power setup.
- Compare with another compatible charger or a cable. If a known-good compatible wireless charger works, the original pad or its power setup may be the issue. If wired charging works but wireless charging does not, that narrows the problem but does not identify a failed component.
- Follow Apple’s general charging guidance. If charging still fails, use Apple’s troubleshooting steps for an iPhone that won’t charge or charges slowly and seek service if needed.
Do not conclude that a particular internal part has failed without an inspection; these checks cannot establish the condition of the iPhone’s hardware.

When a different charger makes sense
Consider replacing the pad only if it is incompatible, damaged, or unreliable after checking its power, placement, and the phone’s setup. Before choosing a replacement, verify that it supports your exact iPhone model, is Qi-certified or offers the MagSafe behavior you want, and works with an appropriate power adapter. Also consider whether the phone can stay centered on the pad and check the manufacturer’s stated performance for that specific model. Apple notes that Qi-certified chargers can vary in functionality and performance.
A MagSafe charger may help with magnetic alignment on a supported model, but it is not necessary for every iPhone and will not fix a temperature issue, an unpowered pad, or a problem with the phone itself.
