Coway Airmega Halo Smoke Test: Why Its Blue Light Didn’t Match PM2.5

In WIRED’s September 13, 2026, review, Molly Higgins saw smoke clear from a sealed tent in 1 minute 21 seconds, but a separate monitor still measured elevated PM2.5 after the Airmega Halo’s indicator turned blue. That is a mismatch in one reviewer’s test—not proof that the Halo always misses smoke or misreads air quality.

What happened in the Coway Airmega Halo smoke test?

Higgins put the Halo in auto mode inside a sealed tent with smoke pellets. She tracked visible smoke, the purifier’s indicator, and a separate personal indoor air-quality monitor. The WIRED review does not provide the tent’s volume, the pellets’ composition or mass, the monitor model or calibration, repeat-test counts, or control measurements, so the observations should be read in that context rather than as a controlled, independently replicated result. WIRED’s review describes the test.

  1. After 1 minute 21 seconds, Higgins reported that visible smoke had cleared. The Halo had reached its highest fan speed, but had not entered turbo mode.
  2. At 1 minute 45 seconds, the Halo’s light turned blue, its indication of “good” air quality.
  3. At that point, Higgins’s separate monitor showed 46.5 micrograms per cubic meter of PM2.5. WIRED equated that reading to AQI 128 and described it as unhealthy for sensitive groups.
  4. The Halo returned to its lowest smart-mode setting while the external monitor still showed a high reading. Higgins said her monitor returned to normal nearly six minutes after the test began.

Higgins also reported that the smoke-pellet odor lingered in a bedroom that night, even with another purifier running. Odor persistence is a separate observation; it does not establish what the Halo’s particle sensor measured.

Why could the light turn blue while PM2.5 was elevated?

The Halo’s light and the separate monitor were not necessarily sampling the same air or applying the same threshold. Joe Haycock, vice president of Fresh Air Concepts, offered two possible explanations to WIRED: “The stand-alone monitor [is] nearer to the source of the pollution, whereas the sensor built into the purifier is inside the unit and may be measuring air that has already gone through the device.” He also said the devices “might use different sensors or different criteria as to what constitutes a healthy level.”

COWAY Airmega Halo HEPA Air Purifier for Pets & Allergy, AP-1526D(W), White
  • FAST 360° WHOLE-ROOM PURIFICATION: Powered by Coway’s proprietary HyperVortex Air Technology, it pulls in particles from every direction, all at once. This massive, whisper-quiet airflow completely purifies large spaces up to 1,898 sq. ft. in just 60 minutes.
  • IEST CERTIFIED HEPA FILTRATION: The advanced 3-in-1 composite filter features an IEST-certified HEPA filter that delivers up to 99.97% ultrafine 0.3㎛ particle removal. It provides continuous clinical-grade defense for individuals suffering from seasonal allergies and chronic dust allergy.
  • ADVANCED PET ALLERGY & ODOR DEFENSE: Equipped with a High-efficiency Deodorization Carbon Filter that expertly removes household odors. It effortlessly traps airborne pet hair, micro pet dander, and neutralizes strong pet waste odors, providing ultimate pet allergy relief.
  • WILDFIRE SMOKE & CUSTOM FILTERS: Includes a Fresh Starter Filter for daily micro-sized pollutants, with specialized custom options available. Choose the Allergen Filter for pet and dust mite allergens, or the Intense Smoke Filter for carbon-enhanced protection against wildfire smoke, gases, and VOCs.
  • MEGASCAN SENSOR & REAL-TIME AQI: Detect the invisible with the highly precise MegaScan particle sensor, continuously monitoring the air in real time detecting smoke, fine dust, pollen, dander, pet fur, allergens, viruses, and bacteria down to PM 2.5. An intuitive color-coded AQI indicator shows air quality at a glance.

Those are possibilities, not confirmed explanations for Higgins’s result. The review does not establish which sensor, placement, threshold, or other factor caused the discrepancy. Nor does one test show that every Airmega Halo will turn blue while a monitor elsewhere in the room reports elevated PM2.5.

What does the Airmega Halo tell you about air quality?

The cylindrical purifier draws air through a 360-degree intake and uses a pre-filter, HEPA filter, and activated-carbon layer. A touchscreen and color-coded lights provide status, but the Halo has no numerical pollutant display, app, Wi-Fi, or remote. In practice, a blue light gives a category rather than a PM2.5 value that can be checked against an external monitor.

When the air is clean, Eco-Mode is activated, automatically switching to energy-saving mode. When the room gets dark, the built-in light sensor triggers Sleep Mode for whisper-quiet operation (as low as 19 dB), ensuring undisturbed rest. It runs at maximum of just 56W, consuming 20% less energy than the previous model.
  • PRECISE FILTER LIFE INDICATOR: Take the guesswork out of maintenance. The advanced digital display shows the exact remaining lifespan (100% down to 0%) for both the washable Pre-filter and Max2 Filter. You will know exactly when it's time to replace the Max2 filter (B0GXC2WN3M) or simply wash the Pre-filter once it hits 0%, ensuring optimal air quality at all times.

Higgins found the colors hard to interpret in part because they differ from US AQI color conventions. If you want to see pollutant readings rather than a color status, the Halo’s on-device interface does not provide that comparison; a separate monitor can provide an additional reading, though its location and sensor may differ from the purifier’s.

How should you interpret the Halo’s room-coverage figure?

WIRED gives a coverage figure of 1,898 square feet at one air change per hour (ACH), while describing about 474.5 square feet as the ideal room size at four ACH. These figures are not interchangeable: the larger area corresponds to fewer air changes per hour, while the smaller area corresponds to more frequent air replacement. When assessing coverage, compare models at the same ACH target rather than relying on a headline square-foot figure alone.

What else did the review find about using the Halo?

  • Weight and handling: WIRED reports a weight of 9.7 pounds. Higgins noted the lack of wheels or a handle, which may matter if you expect to move it between rooms.
  • Noise: Coway’s claimed sleep-mode level is 17 decibels. Higgins measured about 75 decibels on high using a decibel-reader app. These figures come from different sources and settings, so they are not a like-for-like comparison.
  • Filter access: Higgins found the bottom panel difficult to remove. That is her usability experience, not evidence that every owner will find it difficult.
  • Overall assessment: WIRED rated the Halo 6/10 and characterized its field-testing as a mixed bag.

What should you compare before choosing a purifier?

The smoke test alone does not establish how the Halo performs against competing models. For a useful comparison, look for measurements and specifications that line up on the same terms:

  • Smoke CADR and room size at a matching air-changes-per-hour target.
  • Whether the unit displays measured particle levels or only a color-based status.
  • How auto mode responds to smoke, ideally in a comparable test.
  • Noise at comparable fan settings, measured under stated conditions.
  • Replacement-filter availability and cost, plus practical details such as a handle and accessible filter panel.

WIRED’s review does not provide a like-for-like competitor test or establish a model-specific replacement-filter SKU, so it cannot settle those comparison points.
