If your iPhone X or newer has a black, unresponsive screen, quickly press and release Volume Up, quickly press and release Volume Down, then press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears. If it still will not turn on, charge it for an hour and try again. Use a computer’s recovery mode only for the startup problems Apple describes; choose Update before Restore because Restore erases the phone.
1. Force-restart the iPhone
For iPhone X and newer Face ID models, use this sequence:

- Quickly press and release the Volume Up button.

2. Charge it, then retry
If the phone does not turn on, connect it to power and leave it charging for one hour, then try the force-restart sequence again. If a low-charge battery symbol appears, Apple advises checking the iPhone hardware and charging for 30 minutes or until it starts. Use a compatible cable and power source you already have if possible; charging guidance does not establish that the display itself is working or identify the cause of a black screen. 3. Decide whether recovery mode fits the screen state
Recovery mode is not the next step for every dark display. It is intended for certain startup or update/restore problems, including a device that remains stuck during startup. It requires a cable and a Mac or PC. On a Mac, open Finder; on a PC, open Apple Devices, then follow Apple’s recovery instructions.
If the phone shows an Apple logo and a stalled progress bar
If the Apple logo and progress bar appear during a restore or migration and the bar has not moved for at least an hour, Apple advises connecting the iPhone to a computer and using recovery mode. Choose Update if offered. Apple Support: If your iPhone freezes on the Apple logo.

If Apple’s startup or update guidance calls for recovery
For iPhone 8 and later, connect the iPhone to the computer, then quickly press and release Volume Up, quickly press and release Volume Down, and press and hold the Side button until the Connect to computer screen appears. 4. Choose Update before Restore
If the computer offers both choices, try Update first. Restore reinstalls iOS and erases all data on the iPhone, so it is not a data-preserving first attempt. If Update fails and you are considering Restore, weigh that data loss before proceeding. Apple’s recovery instructions.

5. When to get service
Contact Apple or an authorized service provider if the iPhone still will not turn on after charging and a force restart, recovery mode cannot update or restore it, or a broken button prevents you from entering recovery mode. Apple Support says, “If your iPhone still won’t turn on, you may need a service.” A black screen by itself does not establish whether the cause is software, power, or hardware.
