There is no single VPN that every reviewer agrees is best for torrenting. RTINGS names Windscribe and Proton VPN among its picks, while TechRadar favors ExpressVPN and also covers NordVPN and Private Internet Access. Choose by checking P2P access rules, privacy evidence, kill-switch behavior, client binding, and whether you need port forwarding—not by treating any one ranking as a universal verdict.
BitTorrent has lawful uses, including sharing files you have permission to distribute. Copyright rules vary by jurisdiction, and a VPN does not make infringement lawful or guarantee anonymity. It can change the IP address visible to torrent peers and reduce what your internet provider can observe, but it does not remove every privacy risk.

What is the best VPN for torrenting?
The best fit depends on what you need. For a feature-focused shortlist, RTINGS names Windscribe its best tested torrenting VPN and lists Proton VPN as a feature-rich alternative. TechRadar names ExpressVPN its top option and discusses NordVPN and Private Internet Access as alternatives. These are different editorial judgments, not a shared ranking or a controlled comparison across all five services.

| Service | What the cited reviewer highlights | Check before subscribing |
|---|---|---|
| Windscribe | RTINGS names it its best tested torrenting VPN and points to P2P support, kill-switch behavior, and port forwarding. RTINGS review. | RTINGS says the reviewed free plan does not support torrenting and notes limitations around annual billing. Verify current plan terms and billing options directly with Windscribe. |
| Proton VPN | RTINGS lists it as a feature-rich alternative. Proton’s documentation covers P2P servers, kill-switch behavior, port forwarding, and binding a torrent client to the VPN interface. Proton VPN torrenting guide and port-forwarding guide. | Proton says its free plan does not include dedicated P2P servers. Check the current plan and server details before relying on them for P2P. |
| ExpressVPN | TechRadar names it its current top option and reports broad P2P server coverage and privacy features. TechRadar review. | Those are reviewer claims; verify P2P availability, supported locations, and current app protections in ExpressVPN’s own terms and documentation. |
| NordVPN | TechRadar discusses it as an alternative and highlights privacy and leak protections. TechRadar review. | Confirm the current P2P server scope, app settings, and plan details directly with NordVPN. |
| Private Internet Access | TechRadar discusses it as an alternative and highlights port forwarding. TechRadar review. | Confirm whether port forwarding and P2P access are available for the locations and apps you plan to use. |
RTINGS’ separately ranked shortlist does not include NordVPN or Private Internet Access, which is one reason not to merge outlet rankings into a supposed consensus. The available reviews also do not establish a comparable, objectively fastest VPN across these providers.
Does my VPN allow P2P?
Check the provider’s current P2P policy before connecting. Some VPNs permit torrenting on all servers; others restrict it to designated servers or locations. Connect only to an endpoint the provider explicitly allows, and confirm that the specific subscription plan includes the required access. A provider’s server list or app label may change, so do not rely on an old review alone.

- 【VPN CASCADING AT EASE】Surpassing the mediocre performance of most VPN routers for home usage, the Beryl AX is capable of hosting a VPN server and VPN client at the same time within the same device, enabling users to remote access local network resources like Wi-Fi printers or local web servers, and accessing the public internet as a VPN client simultaneously.
Plan restrictions matter as well as server restrictions. For example, Proton says its free plan does not include dedicated P2P servers, and RTINGS says Windscribe’s reviewed free plan does not support torrenting. Treat these as plan-specific claims to verify against the providers’ current terms.
Will my real IP show in a torrent swarm?
Other peers can see the IP address your torrent client uses to connect. If the client sends traffic outside the VPN tunnel, peers may see your ordinary internet connection’s IP. A VPN can route that traffic through its server instead, but a connection interruption, application setting, or other misconfiguration can undermine that protection.

Enable the VPN’s kill switch, then bind the torrent client to the VPN network interface if the client supports it. Proton’s support guide explains that qBittorrent and Vuze can be bound this way and warns that selecting the regular internet interface can expose your real IP even if the VPN kill switch is on. Interface names can vary by operating system and VPN protocol, so check the selected interface again after changing either.
How to set up torrenting so a VPN disconnect does not send traffic outside the tunnel
- Check the P2P policy. In the provider’s current documentation or app, identify an explicitly permitted P2P server or location, and connect to it.
- Enable the kill switch. Turn it on in the VPN app’s settings. Proton says its kill switch blocks internet traffic when the VPN connection is interrupted; this is a provider feature claim, not a guarantee that every device or configuration behaves flawlessly.
- Bind the torrent client, if supported. In the client’s network settings, select the VPN interface rather than the regular internet interface. Follow the client and provider documentation for the exact control; Proton documents binding for qBittorrent and Vuze.
- Recheck the interface after configuration changes. If you change VPN protocol or operating system settings, confirm that the client is still bound to the active VPN interface. Proton notes that its interface label can differ by protocol and operating system.
- Stop transfers if the VPN is down. If the tunnel disconnects, pause or stop torrent traffic until the VPN reconnects and you have confirmed the client is using the VPN interface. Do not assume the kill switch compensates for an incorrect client binding.
Do I need port forwarding for torrenting?
Not always. Port forwarding can allow direct incoming connections and may make it easier to reach more peers, particularly for less popular torrents. Without it, some peers that require an open port may be harder to connect to. Proton documents port forwarding, and RTINGS notes its absence can limit connections to peers without open ports.

- 【Repeater for Public, Hotel WiFi】Convert a public network(wired/wireless) to a private network(wired/wireless) for secure surfing. Work with Captive Portal. (Note: Most of the Free Public Wi-Fi hotspot set a time limit for users, which will disconnect your devices once the time is over. To deal with this situation, please reconnect your router to the wifi.)
That does not mean port forwarding guarantees a fixed speed increase. Its value depends on the swarm, the peers available, and the provider’s implementation. It matters more if incoming peer connections are important to you or you often download low-seed torrents; for casual downloads with many available peers, it may be less important. Check whether the feature is supported on the plan, server, and device you intend to use.
How should I compare privacy and performance claims?
Look for evidence behind no-logs claims
A no-logs policy is a provider commitment, not proof that a service can never identify a user or be compelled to produce information. Compare how specifically the policy describes retained data and look for independent audits or other supporting evidence. Reviewers may weigh these factors differently, so distinguish a reviewer’s assessment from a verified guarantee of anonymity.

Separate feature claims from tested behavior
A kill switch, leak protection, or P2P server label describes a feature; it does not by itself establish how reliably that feature works in every app and operating system. Consider whether a reviewer tested leak behavior or P2P performance, and note the publication date and test conditions. The reviewed pages do not provide a comparable cross-provider speed benchmark that establishes one fastest choice.
Compare the factors that affect your use
- P2P access: whether it is allowed everywhere or only on designated servers, and whether your plan includes it.
- Privacy evidence: policy detail and independent audits, rather than an unsupported promise of complete anonymity.
- Protection behavior: kill-switch and leak testing, alongside the ability to bind your client to the VPN interface.
- P2P performance: tests specific to torrenting, with their conditions and date stated.
- Port forwarding: whether you need incoming connections or often use less popular torrents.
- Cost and usability: current price and billing term, device and app support, plan limits, and how easy it is to select the right server and settings.
What should I do if the VPN disconnects?
Pause or stop the torrent client, check that the VPN app has reconnected to a P2P-permitted server, and confirm that the client remains bound to the active VPN interface. If the interface changed after a protocol or system change, select the VPN interface again before resuming. A kill switch is an important safeguard, but Proton’s binding guidance shows why it should not be treated as a substitute for correct client configuration.
