How to Fix an iPad That Won’t Connect to Wi‑Fi or Bluetooth

Find out whether an iPad connection problem comes from the iPad, Wi‑Fi network, VPN, or Bluetooth accessory—and follow the right steps to fix it.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First find out whether the problem follows the iPad, the Wi‑Fi network, or the Bluetooth accessory. Check the connection settings, test another network or device, and only then try resets. This helps avoid changing a working router or erasing settings unnecessarily.

Start by identifying what is failing

Wi‑Fi can connect an iPad to a router without giving it internet access. Bluetooth pairing is a separate connection problem, usually involving the accessory’s power, pairing mode, or compatibility. Check the scope before making changes:

  • For Wi‑Fi, see whether other devices can use the same network and whether the iPad can join a different Wi‑Fi network.
  • For Bluetooth, try another accessory with the iPad, or test the accessory with another device.

These comparisons help distinguish an iPad problem from a network or accessory problem. Apple’s Wi‑Fi troubleshooting guidance and Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance use the same kind of isolation checks.

Fix an iPad that won’t connect to Wi‑Fi

Check Wi‑Fi and Airplane Mode

  1. Open Settings > Wi‑Fi and make sure Wi‑Fi is on.
  2. Confirm Airplane Mode is off.
  3. Tap the network you want to use. A checkmark beside its name means it is selected. If prompted, enter its password.

If the Wi‑Fi control is dimmed or unavailable, restart the iPad and check again. If the iPad joins the network but shows “No Internet Connection,” or apps cannot get online, the issue may be the internet connection rather than Wi‑Fi pairing.

Find out whether the network or iPad is at fault

  • Other devices also cannot get online on this Wi‑Fi: Check that the router and modem are powered, and contact your internet service provider if the connection remains down.
  • Other devices work, but the iPad does not: Try connecting the iPad to a different Wi‑Fi network. If it works there, focus on the original router or network settings.
  • The iPad cannot connect on any Wi‑Fi network: After the checks below, contact Apple Support.

For a home network, check that the router has current firmware and supports the iPad, and that the iPad is within range. If the router offers separate frequency bands, try another one; Apple gives 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz as examples. You can also restart the router and modem by unplugging them, then reconnecting them. If this is a school or workplace network, ask its administrator rather than changing managed settings. See Apple’s Wi‑Fi troubleshooting steps.

Forget and rejoin a saved network

If a saved password or network entry may be stale, open Settings > Wi‑Fi, tap the info button beside the network, then choose Forget This Network. Select it again and enter the password to rejoin. This removes that saved network from the iPad; it is an option to try, not a required first step. Apple documents the network-reset options in its iPad settings guide.

Check VPN or security software

A VPN or third-party security app can interfere with network connectivity. If one is installed, temporarily uninstall it, restart the iPad, and test Wi‑Fi. If connectivity returns and you need the software, contact its provider or VPN manager before reinstalling it. On a school- or business-managed iPad, consult the administrator before removing or changing managed software. Follow Apple’s guidance on VPN and third-party security software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reset network settings only after simpler checks

Resetting network settings removes saved network settings, previously used Wi‑Fi networks and passwords, and VPN settings that were not installed through a configuration profile or mobile device management (MDM). It does not erase personal content or media.

  1. Open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset.
  2. Tap Reset Network Settings and confirm.
  3. Reconnect to Wi‑Fi and enter the network password again.

If the iPad is managed by a school or employer, check with IT before resetting it. Profile- or management-installed settings are handled differently, and removing a profile can also affect settings and certificates. See Apple’s explanation of iPad resets.

Fix an iPad that won’t connect to a Bluetooth accessory

Check the accessory before pairing

  • Keep the iPad and accessory nearby.
  • Make sure the accessory is on and charged or powered; replace its batteries if needed.
  • For a first connection, put it in discovery or pairing mode using the maker’s instructions.
  • If an app controls the accessory, check Settings > Privacy & Security > Bluetooth and allow that app to use Bluetooth.

Apple outlines these checks in its Bluetooth accessory troubleshooting guide.

Forget the accessory and pair it again

For an accessory that was paired before, open Settings > Bluetooth, tap its info or actions button, then choose Forget This Device. Put the accessory back into discovery mode and pair it again. If it is currently paired with another phone, tablet, or computer, unpair it there before retrying. Check with the accessory maker if you are unsure whether it supports your iPad. Apple’s instructions cover third-party accessory pairing and Bluetooth accessories on iPad.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the accessory appears connected but sound or another function is not using it, select it again under My Devices where applicable. For intermittent wireless or audio performance, disconnect Bluetooth accessories you are not using, try moving the iPad or accessory, or test whether Airplane Mode improves audio interference. These are targeted performance checks, not fixes for a Bluetooth control that is greyed out.
