First identify whether the failure happens during build, installation, launch, or runtime; then follow the matching checks below. The exact Xcode or device error is the best guide to the cause.
First, identify where the failure happens
Keep the exact error text and note what happens on the device. “Builds but won’t install” needs a different fix from an app that opens and immediately closes. Use this distinction before changing project settings:

- Build failure: Xcode reports an error before the app is installed. Follow the error message; investigate architecture settings only if the error points to architecture.
- Install failure: The build succeeds, but Xcode or iOS rejects or cannot install the app. Check the destination and signing setup, and consider how the app was installed.
- Launch failure: Installation completes, but the app terminates as it opens. Collect device logs or a crash report and compare the failing configuration.
- Runtime problem: The app stays open but behaves incorrectly. Reproduce the behavior on the affected device and record its model and iOS version.
Check the run destination and scheme
In Xcode’s run-destination control, select the connected physical iPhone or iPad—not an iOS Simulator or a generic build-only destination. Confirm that the active scheme includes the app target you intend to run. If the device is not available as a destination, make sure it is visible to Xcode in Device Hub and respond to any trust prompt.
Also check that Xcode has the platform support needed for the selected target. Apple notes that missing platform support can prevent building and running for that destination. See Apple’s guide to running on simulated or physical devices.

Fix signing and provisioning for a physical device
A physical-device run needs a valid development signing and provisioning setup. In the app target’s signing settings, check that you are signed in to an Apple account in Xcode, that the target is assigned to the intended team, and that the bundle identifier is unique for the app.
For the usual setup, try automatic signing
Use automatic signing unless your project has a specific reason to manage provisioning manually. In the normal flow, Xcode can register a connected device and create the development provisioning profile it needs.

If the project uses manual signing
Check that the device is registered for the development profile and that the profile is current and matches the app’s signing configuration. A mismatch can block installation even when the build itself succeeds. Apple explains device registration and profiles in Distributing your app to registered devices.

If the app installs but will not launch
Determine whether the app terminates immediately or runs and then fails during a particular action. Reproduce the issue with the debugger or inspect the device’s crash report, and record the device model, iOS version, and build configuration. A problem can be specific to a device and OS combination rather than a general build problem.

Compare Debug and Release behavior. If only Release fails, test that release build on actual hardware; Apple recommends testing release builds on devices and across relevant OS versions. See Apple’s release-build testing guidance.
If installation fails for an IPA
Check how the app reached the device. Apple’s Developer Mode guidance applies specifically to apps installed from an iOS Package Archive (IPA); it is not a universal fix for every failed Xcode run. For archive-based installation, review Apple’s instructions on distributing to registered devices and enable Developer Mode if the installation route requires it.

If Xcode reports an architecture build error
Do not change architecture settings speculatively. If the error identifies an architecture problem, Apple’s first recommended step in TN3117: Resolving architecture build errors on Apple silicon is to restore ARCHS, VALID_ARCHS, and EXCLUDED_ARCHS to their defaults for each affected target.

What simulator success does—and does not—tell you
An app that works in the simulator may still fail or behave differently on a physical device. Apple cautions: “Be aware that simulators run within Device Hub on your Mac and don’t replicate the performance or features of a physical device.” Use simulator results as one check, not proof that device installation and runtime behavior are sound. Apple’s device and simulator documentation describes the distinction.

Details to collect before narrowing the cause
If the checks above do not resolve the issue, capture the information that distinguishes one failure path from another:
- The literal Xcode or iOS error message.
- The device model and iOS version.
- The active scheme and whether the selected destination is a simulator or physical device.
- Whether installation completes, and whether the app came from Xcode or an exported archive.
- Whether the problem occurs in Debug, Release, or both, plus relevant console output or a crash report.
Without those details, no single fix can be identified reliably: a successful build alone does not show whether the device, signing setup, installation route, or runtime is responsible.
