There is no single fix for an IDrive backup failure. The reliable route is to read the exact error text or the affected file in the job’s log, identify which IDrive product ran the backup, and apply the one low-risk check that matches that error. The causes covered here fall into five groups: the client machine or network is unavailable, a selected source drive is not available, files are blocked by access rights, the Windows backup engine has stopped, or a Mirror job hits a snapshot or disk-read error. If the matching check does not clear the problem, escalate to IDrive support with the error code and log excerpt.
Start with the exact symptom
Changing settings before you know the error is the most common way to make a backup failure harder to diagnose. Record the details first.

- Open the backup summary and the activity log for the failed job. Note the error text, the affected file or drive, the time of the failure, and whether the job is an online backup, a local backup, or an IDrive Mirror job.
- Compare the summary with the file-level details. A job can be reported as failed in one place while the details show only some items failing, or the reverse. Do not treat a job as fully successful until the file-level log has been checked.
- Change one setting at a time, then rerun the backup. If you change several things at once, you will not know which one helped.
Match the failure to your IDrive workflow
The same message can mean different things in different products, so identify the workflow first. The table below maps each workflow to the checks in this guide that apply to it.
| Workflow | What it protects | Checks that apply |
|---|---|---|
| Online backup on Windows | Selected files sent to IDrive’s servers | Connection, mapped-drive permissions, restarting the IDriveService engine (documented for series 6 and below) |
| Online backup on Mac | Selected files, including mapped, USB, and external drives | Source availability, access rights, and the permission-error setting |
| Local backup | Copies kept on a local drive | Source availability; restore workflows are documented, but no separate local-backup error codes were confirmed in IDrive’s reviewed pages |
| IDrive Mirror | Windows volumes using VSS snapshots | Error-code checks: SOCKET_START_ERROR, BLOCK_READ_ERROR, BLOCK_READ_CRC_ERROR, SNAPSHOT_DELETED, and other VSS errors |
Two version limits apply. IDrive’s Windows FAQ states that it covers client series 6 and below, so newer clients may show different labels or service names. IDrive’s Mac FAQ states that it applies to accounts created after 25 September 2026, so older accounts may behave differently. Most of IDrive’s help pages do not show a visible update date, so match any on-screen instruction to the client version you have installed.

Check the connection and source availability
Availability problems are the easiest to confirm and the most common reason a scheduled job cannot reach its data.
- Client network. For IDrive Mirror, the SOCKET_START_ERROR description points to an unavailable network connection on the client machine. IDrive’s Mirror error guide lists this as the solution: “Check the internet connection of the client machine and try again.” Confirm the computer is online, then retry.
- Selected source drives. IDrive’s Mac FAQ says that mapped, USB, and external drives must be part of the backup set and available when the backup runs. If a drive is unplugged, not mounted, or not visible to the computer, the job can fail or skip that source. Reconnect it, confirm it appears in the system, and rerun the job.
- USB drives that sleep. IDrive’s support material includes the scenario of a backup stopping when an external USB drive goes to sleep. Keep the drive connected and awake during the backup window. Do not change system power-management settings as a general fix, because IDrive’s documented guidance does not establish that as a safe, universal step. Ask support first if the job keeps stopping.
Fix access-rights and skipped-file failures
Permission errors are easy to miss because a backup can look almost complete while some items were not protected. IDrive’s Mac FAQ says that inaccessible files or folders may be skipped. Depending on the “Ignore file/folder level access rights/permission errors” setting, they may also be marked as failed and counted toward the final job status. Windows mapped-drive permissions can produce similar failures.

- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Find the affected file or folder in the file-level log, not only in the job summary.
- Check whether the account that runs the backup can read the item. On Windows, check the mapped-drive share permissions for that account.
- Fix the permission if the item should be protected. If the item should not be in the backup set, remove it from the set instead.
- Check the “Ignore file/folder level access rights/permission errors” setting so you know whether a skipped item will appear as a failed status in future runs.
- Rerun the backup and confirm the item appears in the log as backed up.
Permission behavior can vary by account and by setting, so confirm the current option names in your client.

- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Press Win + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - Locate IDriveService in the list of services.
- Start the service, then rerun the backup.
This step matches the stopped-engine symptom only. It is not a fix for connection, permission, or Mirror errors, and it should not be used on Mac.
IDrive Mirror error codes
Mirror errors are tied to specific codes, and the remedies differ. Match the exact code before running any disk or snapshot command.

SOCKET_START_ERROR
This points to an unavailable network connection on the client machine. Use the connection check in the section above, then retry the job.

BLOCK_READ_ERROR
IDrive associates this code with a device that is busy or hung. Restart the backup first. If the error persists, check the disk, using the disk-check steps in IDrive’s Mirror error guide.

BLOCK_READ_CRC_ERROR
This code is associated with possible bad sectors, and IDrive recommends checking the volume. Because a repeated disk-read error can indicate failing storage, copy any critical data elsewhere before running disk checks if the error keeps returning.
SNAPSHOT_DELETED
IDrive’s guide lists three possible causes: low free disk space, stale snapshots left by competing backup software, or insufficient shadow storage. Free up disk space on the volume, check whether another backup program is creating snapshots on the same machine, and review shadow-storage allocation using the commands IDrive provides in the Mirror guide.
Other VSS provider or snapshot errors
For other VSS errors, follow the matching IDrive steps for that exact message or contact IDrive support. The Mirror guide notes a maximum of 65 volumes for a single VSS snapshot set, which is useful when a job covers many volumes.

What not to do
- Do not delete all Windows shadow copies as a routine fix. It is a destructive operation and should be done only when the matching Mirror error guidance calls for it, with an understanding of what will be lost.
- Do not apply Mirror VSS, snapshot, or disk commands to ordinary online file-backup failures. They belong to Mirror errors only.
- Do not assume a Windows service step applies to a Mac or to a non-engine error.
- Do not change several settings at once, because you will lose the ability to tell which change resolved the problem.
When to escalate to IDrive support
Escalate when the error does not match a check above, when a diagnosis would require destructive changes, or when the same error returns after the matching step. Gather the following before you contact support:
- The exact error code or message text
- A log excerpt covering the failure, including the affected file or drive
- The product and workflow: online backup, local backup, or IDrive Mirror
- The operating system and the installed client version
- The steps already tried and their results
IDrive directs unresolved questions to its support form and also describes sending an error report from the client. Include the information above in either route so support does not need to start from the beginning.
