Phone gaming is not one experience. What you can do depends on your operating system (iPhone or Android), whether the specific game supports the feature you want, the phone itself, and whether the game is installed on the device or streamed from a remote server. A touch-only puzzle game on an iPhone and a controller-supported action game streamed to an Android phone both count as gaming on a phone, but they involve different features, different limits, and different things to check before you start.
How big mobile gaming is
Sensor Tower, a mobile app analytics firm, published its State of Gaming report in February 2026 with estimates for calendar year 2025. The headline figures are useful for scale, but each one measures something specific:

Read these as estimates for the stores and platforms the firm covers. A download is not a distinct player, and a download rate is not a count of games that were kept or played long term. The $82 billion figure is mobile game revenue only, so it does not describe every kind of game spending, and the 52 billion figure includes PC and console, so it is not a phone-only number.
What shapes your experience
Before comparing features, sort out four variables. Each one can change the answer to “can I do this on my phone?”

- Operating system: iPhone and Android offer different platform tools, controller pairing paths, and save systems.
- The individual game: the developer decides whether a game supports controllers, Google Play Games, achievements, or cross-device saves.
- The phone: screen size, processing power, and battery affect how a game feels, and this overview does not measure any of them.
- Installed or streamed: installed games run on the phone itself, while cloud games run on a remote server and depend on your network and the service’s rules.
Finding, organizing, and sharing games
Phone platforms now include tools for discovering games and tracking your play. These features are part of the operating system or store, but they do not appear in every game.
Apple Games app
Apple describes the Games app as a place to discover games, see what friends are playing, and track Game Center achievements and leaderboards. It also surfaces in-app events. Apple’s developer documentation says the app is pre-installed on iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS 26 or later, so earlier systems will not have it by default. Game Center features depend on each game supporting them.

Google Play Games Sidekick
On Android, Google Play Games Sidekick appears only in select games installed through Google Play. Google’s help documentation lists its features as a player profile, achievements, Play Points offers, screenshots, screen recording, a Do Not Disturb option, and YouTube livestreaming. If a game you own does not show it, the game is outside the group that supports it.
Touch controls and physical controllers
Touch is the default for phone gaming. Most casual and puzzle titles are built around taps, swipes, and on-screen buttons, and they need nothing more. Players who prefer physical buttons can use a controller, but only with games that support one.

Touch controls
Apple’s developer guidance describes virtual controller overlays for mobile games, which place on-screen controls over the game for players who do not have a physical controller. Apple’s developer guidance also says the App Store can show a controller-support badge on supported game listings, which is the most direct way to check controller support before you buy.
Connecting a controller to an iPhone
Apple Support describes pairing a wireless Xbox, PlayStation, or other Bluetooth game controller with an iPhone through Bluetooth settings. Apple also documents third-party gamepads, arcade sticks, and racing wheels. Wired controllers may work too, but depending on the iPhone and the controller, you may need an adapter.

- Put the controller into pairing mode using its own instructions.
- On the iPhone, open Bluetooth settings and select the controller from the list of nearby devices.
- Open a game whose App Store listing shows controller support, and confirm that movement and buttons respond.
- If a particular button or feature does not work, check the game’s own control settings. Apple’s guidance notes that support for specific buttons varies by controller and app.
Choosing a controller for phone games
- Confirm the game’s controller support first. A controller is only useful in games that read its input.
- Check whether the controller connects wirelessly over Bluetooth or needs a wired connection and adapter for your phone.
- Look at the button layout and whether it matches the game’s control scheme, since mapping differs from game to game.
- Android controller pairing is not covered in this overview, so check your phone maker’s and the game’s instructions.
Cloud gaming: a conditional option
Cloud gaming lets you play games that run on a remote server and stream to your phone, so the game does not need to be installed on the device. Whether it works for you depends on the provider, your country, your phone, your network, and the service’s catalog.

Before relying on a cloud service, check the following on the provider’s own pages:
- Whether the service is available in your country right now.
- Which phones, browsers, or apps are supported, and whether you need a native app or a web browser.
- Network speed and stability requirements, including whether mobile data is supported.
- Whether the specific game you want is in the catalog.
- Account, subscription, and trial conditions, and whether a controller works with streamed titles.
Save progress and moving to a new phone
Progress depends on the game’s account system. Google’s help documentation says some games autosave progress when you are signed in to Google Play Games, but not all games do, so you should confirm that a specific game uses it.
Android: moving to a new phone
- Confirm that the game uses Google Play Games. Check the game’s listing or in-game sign-in options.
- Sign in to the same Google Account on the new Android device.
- Open the game and sign in with the same account it used before.
- If progress is missing, Google directs you to the game developer for account and save problems.
iPhone and cross-device saves
The sources reviewed here do not establish how progress transfers between iPhones or between iPhone and Android. Check whether the game asks you to sign in, and keep any account recovery details, before you switch devices.

What to check before you commit
- Input: touch-only or controller-supported, and whether virtual controls can be adjusted.
- Availability: whether the exact game is offered for your operating system and region.
- Social features: friends, achievements, leaderboards, events, profile overlays, and recording tools, each of which depends on the platform and the game.
- Progress: whether the game saves to an account and supports transfer to a new device.
- Cloud access: region, supported devices, network needs, catalog, and subscription terms.
- Hardware fit: screen size, performance, battery, and heat, which you should judge against your own phone and the game’s requirements.

The Bottom Line
