Google’s service was formerly called “Find My Device,” and some devices may still show both names during the transition. Sign in with the account linked to the missing phone, check its reported location, then secure it before considering a remote erase.
First, choose the right locator

These services do not provide interchangeable routes: use the platform tied to the missing phone and its account. Google’s current Android Help explains the Find Hub name and transition from Find My Device: Find, secure or erase a lost Android device.

Locate an Android phone with Google Find Hub

On another Android device, open the Find Hub app, or visit Google’s Find Hub web page. Sign in with the Google Account used on the lost phone. If someone is helping, use guest access in the app rather than giving them your password.

Select the missing phone from the device list and inspect the location shown. Treat it as a reported position, not a guarantee of the phone’s live location: if the phone is offline, the map may show a last known location, depending on the device’s settings and network conditions.

If the phone may be recoverable, use the available secure-device controls and, where offered, add a message or callback number to its lock screen. If you suspect theft, focus on protecting your accounts and data; a map location does not establish that approaching it is safe.
When Android locating or remote controls may not work
Google says securing or erasing a phone requires it to have power, mobile data or Wi-Fi, a signed-in Google Account, Find Hub enabled, and visibility on Google Play. Offline finding also depends on settings and network conditions; Google’s current overview describes the crowdsourced Find Hub network, but does not establish a universal guarantee for every model or powered-off state. If two-step verification sends a sign-in prompt to the missing phone, use a backup method for your Google Account if you have one. Losing a phone can also mean losing access to an authentication method.
Locate an iPhone with Apple Find My

Open Find My on another Apple device, or go to iCloud.com/find, then select the missing iPhone. Apple says iCloud.com shows a map location when the device is powered on and connected to a network.

Check whether the displayed position is current or a previously available location. If Send Last Location was enabled, the iPhone can upload a location shortly before its battery needs charging; Apple says locations on iCloud.com are shown for up to 24 hours.

Mark the iPhone as lost to protect personal information and display a message or callback number where available. Apple describes its crowdsourced Find My network as using Bluetooth to detect a device or accessory and report its approximate location. In a support article published September 23, 2026, Apple said more than a billion Apple devices participate in that network, whose process it describes as anonymous and encrypted.

Apple’s guidance for lost devices and account security is in How to find your lost iPhone or iPad. Be wary of messages claiming the phone has been found and of callers posing as Apple Support; do not share account passwords or verification codes in response. Review your Apple Account security if you believe someone may have accessed it.

What to know before remotely erasing a phone
Erasing is a last resort because it protects data at the cost of changing what you can do remotely. Use the platform-specific consequences below before confirming.

| iPhone | Apple says an erase cannot be undone. If the iPhone is offline, the erase starts the next time it comes online. For devices running iOS 15 or later, Apple says Find My can still locate the device after erasing it. |
If you filed an AppleCare+ Theft and Loss claim, Apple advises keeping the device in Find My and on your Apple Account—even after remotely erasing it. Removing it can affect the claim. If the phone is probably gone

Use the platform’s secure or lost-device options and protect the accounts that were signed in on the phone.

Contact your wireless carrier to ask about suspending service if you do not expect to recover the device. The carrier’s procedure depends on the provider and region.

Do not go alone to confront someone based on a location marker. The displayed location may be approximate or out of date, and the services do not establish that approaching it is safe.
