Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →First, reseat the Ethernet plug at both ends and check that its latch holds. Then test with a known-good Ethernet cable. If the dropouts stop, replace the suspect cable; if they continue, check another port or device before treating the connector as the cause. A link light means a connection has been established, not that the cable is fault-free.
1. Reseat the connector and inspect it
- Unplug the Ethernet cable at both ends, then push each plug back in until it is fully seated. Cisco’s guidance for port flaps is to remove and reinsert the connector to ensure it is fully seated (Cisco: Troubleshoot Port Flaps on Catalyst 9000 Switches).
- Check that the small plastic latch on each plug catches and keeps the plug in place. A broken latch can let a plug work loose.
- Look for bent or missing contacts, debris, a cracked plug, or visible damage to the jack. Do not force a damaged plug or insert tools into the jack.
If a plug will not stay seated, or the jack is visibly damaged, stop using that connection and arrange repair or replacement of the affected cable or device port.

2. Swap in a known-good cable
Use a cable that works reliably elsewhere, connecting the same devices and ports if possible. This is a stronger isolation check than reseating alone: a loose connection may improve temporarily after reseating, while a cable swap tests whether the original patch cable is the recurring source of the dropouts. Cisco recommends cable substitution when troubleshooting link flaps; Fluke also identifies poor RJ45 plug termination as a possible patch-cord fault (Cisco troubleshooting guidance; Fluke Networks: Patch Cord Testing).
If the connection becomes stable with the substitute cable, retire the original and use a replacement suited to the existing connection, such as an appropriate Cat 6 patch cable. Replacing the cable will not fix a damaged jack or faulty network port.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. Find out whether the fault follows the cable, port, or device
If a known-good cable does not stop the disconnections, change one thing at a time so the result is useful:
- Try a different Ethernet port on the router or switch.
- If possible, connect the same cable and port to another device, or try the affected device on a known-working port.
- Note whether the link drops when the cable is moved or gently disturbed. Avoid pulling or bending it sharply.
If the problem stays with one port or endpoint across cable changes, the jack, port hardware, or device may need attention. If this is a managed switch, an administrator can review link events and interface counters; on supported copper ports, Cisco’s Catalyst 9000 guidance also recommends copper-only time-domain reflectometry (TDR) diagnostics. The guide is platform-specific and dated September 9, 2026, so its commands and diagnostics should not be applied to unrelated hardware (Cisco Catalyst 9000 troubleshooting guide).

4. Interpret link lights and cable testers carefully
A link light is not a cable pass
A link indicator shows link state. A marginal cable can still establish a link and then produce errors or repeated link loss, so a lit indicator does not certify cable performance (Fluke Networks: Patch Cord Testing).
A basic continuity tester has limits
A simple wire-map or continuity checker can reveal some broken conductors, but a one-to-one conductor map may miss split pairs. Split-pair faults can impair reliable communication even when a basic tester’s lights appear to show continuity. If you maintain several cables or repeatedly troubleshoot wiring, choose a tester that explicitly detects split pairs; for a single suspected patch cable, substitution is usually the simpler first check (Fluke Networks: Split Pairs).

Which check should you try first?
| Check | Effort | What it tells you | Reuse |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reseat and inspect | Free and immediate | May correct a loose plug or reveal visible damage, but does not rule out an intermittent cable fault. | Useful for any connection. |
| Swap in a known-good cable | Simple if a working cable is available | A stronger way to isolate the original patch cable from the ports and devices. | Useful whenever another suitable cable is available. |
| Use a wire-map tester with split-pair detection | Requires a tester | Can reveal wiring faults a basic continuity check may miss. | Most useful when checking multiple cables or investigating repeated wiring problems. |

Contact the device or network administrator, manufacturer support, or a qualified technician if the jack is damaged, the fault consistently follows one port or device, or a known-good cable does not isolate the cause. For a managed switch, share the affected port and the times of the dropouts so its administrator can check the relevant events and counters.
