Migration can replace the old Public Resolver with PublicResolverV2 without copying every record, so restore the required records in the active resolver before testing forward and reverse resolution.
Why an ENS name can stop resolving after an upgrade
An ENS name is not resolved by a wallet or website from a permanent, universal resolver address. The name has an on-chain resolver assignment, and that contract stores or serves the records used by applications. The resolver currently assigned to the name is the contract applications must query. It is also the contract that authorized record writes must target.

That distinction matters during ENSv2 migration. A name that previously used a known Public Resolver may be switched to PublicResolverV2. The resolver replacement and the record migration are separate concerns: the name can point to the new contract while address, text, avatar, content-hash, or other records still need to be copied or recreated. For some migrated names, the former v1 resolver is cleared and a resolver supplied in the migration data becomes active.
A second possibility is that the blockchain state is correct but the application is not. A wallet or decentralized application can fail independently when its ENS library predates ENSv2, assumes every name uses one shared resolver address, queries the wrong network, or keeps an old resolver address in cache.

How ENS resolution works
Forward resolution: name to address
Forward resolution converts a name such as example.eth into an Ethereum address. Applications may also read other records from the same resolver, including text metadata, an avatar, or a content hash. A successful name display is not proof that every record is present; an address record can work while an avatar or text record is missing.
Reverse resolution: address to name
Reverse resolution starts with an address and returns a name that the address claims as its reverse record. Wallets and dapps should not display that returned name as a primary name until they forward-resolve it and confirm that it resolves back to the same address. A reverse record alone is therefore insufficient for a trustworthy identity display.
The active resolver is the source of truth
Older integrations sometimes hard-code a resolver address. That approach becomes unsafe after migration. Read the resolver assigned to the specific name on the selected chain, then use that address for reads and writes. A cached address can produce stale reads, and a write sent to the former resolver can succeed at the transaction level while changing records that the name no longer uses.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBefore changing anything
- Connect the account that controls the ENS name or has permission to edit its records.
- Identify the chain on which the name and its records are registered. Write this down before making a transaction.
- Keep the name, current resolver address, and any recent migration transaction hash available.
- Never share a seed phrase, private key, wallet recovery file, or signing approval with anyone helping you troubleshoot.
- Decide which records must be restored: address records, text records, avatar, content-hash, and any other records your applications use.
Do not begin by repeatedly editing records in a wallet. First establish the network and active resolver. Otherwise, you may spend fees on a different chain or on a contract that the name no longer consults.

Step-by-step recovery workflow
1. Select the correct network
- Open the wallet or account session that controls the name.
- Select the chain where the name is registered and where its records are expected to be read.
- Confirm that the ENS Manager or ENS-aware lookup is also connected to that same chain.
- Record the chain before submitting any transaction.
A client querying another network can show an unresolved result even when the name works correctly on its registration chain. If one application fails while another succeeds, network selection is one of the first differences to compare.
2. Inspect the resolver actually assigned to the name
- Open ENS Manager, the official interface for names using a supported Public Resolver, or another ENS-aware lookup.
- Search for the exact name on the selected chain.
- Read the resolver address shown for that name.
- Compare it with the resolver address your wallet, dapp, script, or integration expects.
Do not assume that an address stored in an old integration is still valid. The resolver shown for the name is the one applications must query and the one authorized record writes must use. If the interface cannot display a resolver, treat that as a diagnostic result rather than guessing a replacement address.
3. Check whether ENSv2 migration replaced the resolver
Review the name’s migration result and recent on-chain transactions. ENSv2 migration can replace a known Public Resolver with PublicResolverV2. In that case, the name may have a valid new resolver while its records still need separate migration.

Other migrated names can have the v1 resolver cleared and a resolver supplied in the migration data assigned instead. The important question is not which resolver was used historically; it is which resolver is assigned now on the chain you selected.

If you have a migration transaction hash, inspect its outcome in an ENS-aware interface or compatible chain explorer. Confirm that the name’s resolver assignment changed as expected before attempting record writes.
4. Restore records in the active resolver
- In ENS Manager, open the record-editing view for the name.
- Verify that the interface is displaying the resolver you identified in the previous step.
- Copy or recreate the Ethereum address record and any other required records, such as text fields, avatar, content-hash, or service-specific records.
- Review the destination values carefully before signing.
- Submit the transaction through the supported write path.
- Wait for the transaction to be confirmed on-chain.
Restoring an address record alone may not restore the complete experience. A wallet can resolve the address while a profile image, website, social handle, or decentralized content link remains blank because those records were not copied. Recreate only the records you need, but make a deliberate list rather than assuming the migration copied everything.
If a write is rejected, check that the connected account has permission, that the selected chain is correct, and that the interface is using the active resolver. A successful transaction sent to an obsolete resolver does not repair the name.
5. Test forward resolution
- Resolve the ENS name in ENS Manager and confirm that it returns the expected address.
- Read the individual records you restored and verify their values.
- Use a second independent ENS-aware client on the same chain.
- Compare the resolver address, address record, and other records returned by both clients.
If ENS Manager and an independent client agree but one wallet or dapp still reports failure, the problem is probably in that client rather than in the name’s on-chain state. Compare its chain selection, ENS library version, and cached resolver data before changing records again.

6. Test reverse resolution and primary-name display
- Start with the address that should display the ENS name.
- Query reverse resolution to obtain the claimed name.
- Forward-resolve that returned name.
- Confirm that the forward result is the same address, using the same address format and chain context.
Only after that round trip succeeds should a wallet or dapp treat the name as the address’s primary name. A reverse record can point to a name that no longer resolves, points to a different address, or is being read on the wrong network.
7. Escalate with useful evidence
If the name fails across independent clients after the resolver and records are correct, prepare a concise diagnostic bundle:
- the chain you selected;
- the exact ENS name;
- the resolver address currently assigned;
- the transaction hash for the migration or record update;
- the clients that fail and the clients that succeed;
- the specific forward or reverse lookup that produced the error.
Share public names, addresses, resolver addresses, and transaction hashes as needed. Never disclose seed phrases or private keys.
Old resolver versus upgraded resolver
| Question | Old or cached view | Current state to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Which contract does the name use? | A resolver address stored by an older integration | The resolver currently assigned to the name on the selected chain |
| Was the resolver changed? | The former known Public Resolver | PublicResolverV2 or another resolver supplied during migration, as shown on-chain |
| Where are records stored? | Records expected in the v1 resolver | Records copied or recreated in the active resolver |
| Where should writes go? | The address used before migration | The resolver currently assigned to the name |
| What proves the repair worked? | A submitted transaction or a wallet refresh | Confirmed on-chain records and matching results from independent clients |
Protocol state versus client state
Separating these two layers prevents unnecessary transactions. Protocol state is the resolver assignment and records stored on-chain. Client state is everything a wallet, dapp, library, network configuration, or cache does while reading that state.
Best Value
| Layer | What to inspect | Typical symptom | Useful action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resolver assignment | The resolver address attached to the name | Every client fails, or writes appear to have no effect | Read the assignment on the correct chain and update records in that resolver |
| Records | Address, text, avatar, content-hash, and other required values | Name resolves but profile or website data is missing | Copy or recreate the missing records and wait for confirmation |
| Network | Wallet, ENS Manager, and lookup client chain selection | One environment reports no name while another works | Switch all tools to the registration chain |
| ENS library | Whether the client supports ENSv2 resolver discovery | Older wallet or dapp cannot resolve after migration | Update the integration or use a client that discovers the assigned resolver |
| Cache | Stored resolver address or stale record response | On-chain values are correct but the interface shows old data | Refresh or clear the client cache, then retest independently |
| Reverse-name validation | Reverse result and forward result for that name | Wallet shows no primary name or shows an incorrect one | Perform the reverse-to-forward round-trip and require an address match |
What to do when only one wallet or dapp fails
Check whether the library predates ENSv2
A client can fail independently when its ENS library predates ENSv2. Older code may expect a single shared resolver address instead of discovering the resolver assigned to each name. Ask the application’s maintainer which ENS library version and resolver-discovery method it uses, or test the name with a current ENS-aware client.
Check for a hard-coded resolver
Search the integration’s configuration for a resolver address that was copied from an older deployment or documentation example. Replace that assumption with a lookup of the name’s current resolver. Reads and writes must both follow the current assignment.
Check network and provider configuration
Confirm that the wallet, RPC provider, ENS library, and user interface all refer to the same chain. A browser tab can retain one network while the wallet has switched to another. Compare the chain identifier shown by each component, then repeat the forward lookup.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Check stale cache behavior
If the resolver and records are correct on-chain, refresh the application or clear its ENS-related cache according to its normal support procedure. Do not treat a cached failure as proof that another migration is needed. A second independent client is the fastest way to distinguish stale local data from a protocol problem.
Symptoms and targeted fixes
The name is unresolved everywhere
- Confirm the registration chain.
- Read the current resolver assignment.
- Determine whether migration replaced or cleared the old resolver.
- Restore the address record in the active resolver.
- Wait for confirmation and test with two clients.
The name resolves, but the address is wrong
- Check that the address record was copied to the active resolver, not the former one.
- Verify the exact address on-chain after confirmation.
- Check whether the application is returning cached data from the old resolver.
The address works, but avatar or text records are missing
- Inspect each required record separately.
- Recreate missing records in the active resolver.
- Confirm each transaction before testing the application again.
Reverse resolution returns a name, but the wallet does not show it
- Forward-resolve the returned name.
- Require the forward result to match the wallet address.
- Check that both reverse and forward queries use the same chain.
- If the round trip matches but the wallet still omits the name, investigate its ENS library, cache, or primary-name support.
A record update transaction succeeded, but nothing changed
- Read the resolver assignment again.
- Compare the transaction’s target contract with the active resolver.
- If the transaction targeted the former resolver, repeat the write through the supported path for the active resolver.
How to verify a complete repair
Use this checklist after migration or any resolver change:
- The wallet controlling the name is connected.
- The wallet, ENS Manager, and lookup client use the registration chain.
- The resolver address has been read from the name rather than copied from older documentation.
- The resolver is the expected migrated contract, such as PublicResolverV2, or the resolver supplied in the migration data.
- The address record exists in that resolver and returns the intended address.
- Required text, avatar, content-hash, and other records exist in that resolver.
- Transactions that created or changed records are confirmed on-chain.
- Forward resolution works in ENS Manager and an independent ENS-aware client.
- Reverse resolution returns the intended name, and forward resolution of that name returns the same address.
- Any affected wallet or dapp has been checked for ENSv2 support, network mismatch, hard-coded resolver addresses, and stale cache.
When not to make another on-chain change
Stop editing records when the resolver assignment and records are correct on-chain and multiple independent clients resolve the name successfully. At that point, another transaction is unlikely to fix a wallet or dapp that is using an outdated library, wrong network, or stale cache. Preserve the resolver address and transaction hashes, then give the affected application’s support team the public diagnostic evidence.
Conversely, do not rely on a single successful wallet display as proof of a complete migration. Verify the address and every record your applications depend on, because a client can show a cached or partial result.
