How to Fix an eGPU That Isn’t Detected or Delivering Expected Frame Rates

An eGPU can fail because the host port is unsupported, the cable or enclosure has a fault, or the app is not using the external GPU. Diagnose each link before replacing hardware or reinstalling drivers.

If an external GPU (eGPU) is not detected, first confirm that your exact computer port supports the connection your enclosure requires; a USB-C-shaped port alone is not enough. If the setup is detected but frame rates are low, check whether the game or app is actually using the eGPU and where the display is connected. Work through the checks below in that order, using support information for your specific computer, enclosure, GPU, and operating system.

Start with the exact computer and connection

Before changing drivers, write down the computer model, operating system and version, exact port in use, enclosure model, and GPU model. Then check the computer maker’s specification for that particular port. USB-C describes the connector shape, not a guarantee of Thunderbolt or external-GPU support. NVIDIA, for example, says its own USB-C port is not compatible with external graphics products: NVIDIA Support’s compatibility answer.

For a Mac, Apple’s published eGPU requirements cover Intel Macs with Thunderbolt 3 running macOS High Sierra 10.13.4 or later. Its support page lists supported AMD GPU families and enclosure combinations by macOS version; compatibility should be checked against those tables rather than inferred from whether a card physically fits. This guidance does not establish support for every Mac or GPU: Apple’s eGPU requirements and compatibility information.

Check power, cable, and direct connection

  • Make sure the enclosure is plugged into power and switched on, if it has a power switch. Check the enclosure maker’s instructions before reseating the GPU or touching its power leads.
  • Connect the enclosure directly to a supported Thunderbolt port on the computer while troubleshooting; remove docks and adapters from the path.
  • Use the cable supplied with the enclosure or a certified Thunderbolt cable. A cable that fits a USB-C port may not support the required Thunderbolt connection. Apple recommends its supplied cable or an Apple Thunderbolt 3 cable and a direct connection for best performance; MSI also recommends a certified cable. See Apple’s connection guidance and MSI’s Thunderbolt troubleshooting guidance.

Do not connect or disconnect a Thunderbolt 3 eGPU while the computer is asleep or hibernating. Dell documents detection and other problems after docking or undocking in those states: Dell’s eGPU sleep and hibernation advisory.

Find out which part is not detected

Check two places separately: the operating system’s list of attached Thunderbolt devices and its list of graphics adapters. The exact menu names differ by computer and operating system. This distinction narrows the fault: an enclosure can connect successfully while the GPU inside it fails to enumerate.

What you see What to check next
Neither the enclosure nor GPU appears Recheck host-port support, the direct connection, cable capability, enclosure power, and Thunderbolt drivers or firmware.
The enclosure appears, but the GPU does not Check enclosure and card compatibility, GPU seating and power leads, enclosure firmware, host firmware, and GPU-driver support.
The GPU appears, but performance is poor Check which GPU the application selects, display routing, workload and resolution, and whether the system meets the relevant platform and app requirements.

To isolate a cable, host, or enclosure fault, MSI recommends trying another certified cable and testing the device on another computer that supports the connection. A second computer is useful only if its port and software support the eGPU setup; an unsupported test host cannot confirm that the enclosure is faulty.

Update software from the right manufacturer

Use the support pages for the exact models rather than applying a generic driver reinstall. MSI recommends checking the laptop’s Thunderbolt driver, BIOS and Thunderbolt firmware, and device firmware. Sonnet’s Windows 11 setup guide also calls out a current operating system, BIOS, firmware, and GPU drivers for the configurations it describes. Check current support for your own computer and enclosure before installing anything: MSI’s model-specific Thunderbolt advice and Sonnet’s Windows 11 eGPU setup guide.

  1. On the computer maker’s support page, find the exact model and review its BIOS, Thunderbolt driver, and host-firmware updates.
  2. On the enclosure maker’s support page, check for firmware and compatibility notes for your enclosure and operating system.
  3. Install the GPU driver recommended for your platform and system by the GPU vendor and computer maker. Follow their model-specific instructions rather than assuming the newest general driver is appropriate.
  4. Restart if the manufacturer’s instructions require it, then check Thunderbolt-device and graphics-adapter listings again.

If the eGPU is detected but frame rates are low

Check whether the app is using the external GPU

Detection only shows that the hardware is available; it does not prove that a particular game or application is rendering on it. On macOS, check the app’s own graphics settings and behavior. Apple notes that some apps choose their graphics processor directly and ignore the system’s “Prefer External GPU” setting: Apple’s explanation of app GPU selection.

Check which display is connected and primary

On supported macOS setups, apps generally use the GPU associated with the primary display. For work that can use an external monitor, connect the display to a port on the eGPU and, where appropriate, set that display as the main display before opening the app. Apple documents this display-routing behavior and the relevant steps for supported macOS versions in its eGPU display guidance.

Compare like with like

There is no universal frame-rate gain for an eGPU. Results depend on the particular host, GPU, application, resolution, display connection, and configuration. Compare performance using the same app, scene or benchmark, resolution, graphics settings, and display path; otherwise, a difference may reflect changed test conditions rather than a fault. The cited compatibility guides do not provide a general FPS benchmark.

Platform-specific limits to check

  • Mac and Boot Camp: Apple says its eGPU support in macOS High Sierra 10.13.4 and later does not extend to Windows running through Boot Camp. Apple also says eGPUs are unavailable in macOS Recovery and during system updates. Consult Apple’s current platform guidance.
  • Mac GPU and enclosure compatibility: Apple’s supported GPU families, chassis, and power requirements vary by macOS version and configuration. For the listed MacBook Pro use case, Apple specifies at least 85 watts of charging power from the chassis; this is not a universal requirement for every computer or eGPU enclosure. Check the applicable compatibility table at Apple Support.
  • Windows and specific systems: Sonnet’s Windows 11 instructions apply to the eGPU configurations described in that guide, not automatically to every Windows computer. ASUS’s eGPU advice is specific to NUC systems; use it only when troubleshooting a relevant NUC configuration: Sonnet’s guide and ASUS NUC troubleshooting.

When replacing a cable, enclosure, or GPU

Replace parts only after identifying the unsupported or failing link. Before choosing a replacement, verify the host port and generation, operating-system and GPU-driver support, enclosure card dimensions and GPU power requirements, power delivery to the computer, certified cable capability, application behavior, and display connection. A new cable or enclosure cannot fix an unsupported host port or an application that does not use the eGPU. Apple’s compatibility tables and MSI’s connection troubleshooting are useful starting points: Apple and MSI.
