A recovery phrase and private key can give someone control of a wallet; a public key is not a spending secret, though it can reveal information about your wallet. Keep recovery details private, confirm how your specific wallet handles backups, and treat quantum risk as a long-term protocol issue—not a reason to trust anyone asking you to “upgrade” by sharing your phrase.
What wallet information is secret?
The terms describe different parts of a wallet’s key system. A recovery phrase can restore wallet keys in many deterministic wallets, a private key authorizes spending, and a public key is used by the relevant cryptographic system but is not itself spending authority. These explanations use Bitcoin sources; other cryptocurrencies may use different address, signature, and key-derivation rules.

| Information | What it does | What to protect |
|---|---|---|
| Recovery phrase | In wallets that support the relevant mnemonic standard, it encodes computer-generated entropy that can be converted into a seed, from which wallet keys are derived. | Keep it secret. Someone who obtains it may be able to restore the wallet and access its funds; the exact result depends on the wallet’s standards, derivation paths, optional passphrase, and policy. |
| Private key | Provides signing authority for the assets or addresses it controls. | Keep it secret. Bitcoin.org’s glossary says private keys “must never be revealed” because they allow spending bitcoins for their respective wallet. |
| Public key | Used with the corresponding private key in the applicable cryptographic system. | It is not equivalent to a private key, but public-key exposure can have privacy or future-risk implications for some Bitcoin outputs, as discussed in BIP 360. |
| Extended public key | Can derive a branch of public keys and addresses in hierarchical deterministic wallets. | It can expose wallet structure and transaction information. BIP 32 also warns of a specific derivation risk: a parent extended public key combined with a non-hardened descendant private key can expose the parent extended private key. |
A recovery phrase is not always a complete wallet backup
BIP 39 specifies a mnemonic encoding computer-generated entropy, with entropy sizes from 128 to 256 bits. It is not intended for sentences invented by a person. A wallet may use additional standards and derivation paths, and restoration can depend on an optional passphrase or wallet-specific setup. For multisig, custom policies, or nonstandard scripts, the phrase alone may not be enough to rediscover funds.
For descriptor wallets, BIP 388 notes that certain policies outside common standard patterns may also need a policy backup to discover existing funds. Such a backup can reveal privacy-sensitive wallet information even if it does not by itself authorize spending.

How should you back up a wallet?
Start with the wallet maker’s own recovery instructions. Bitcoin.org says many modern deterministic wallets can be restored from one recovery phrase, but advises checking how the particular wallet handles backups. Do not assume that a phrase from one wallet restores every wallet configuration in the same way.
- Confirm what must be restored. Check the wallet’s documentation for its recovery phrase standard, derivation paths, any optional passphrase, and whether a wallet policy or other setup information must also be backed up.
- Create the backup using the wallet’s documented process. Use the wallet’s instructions rather than a sentence you made up or an unverified online recovery tool.
- Choose storage that balances secrecy and recoverability. Keep the backup protected from disclosure and in places where you can retrieve it. Bitcoin.org recommends secure locations and durable media; the appropriate choice depends on your circumstances.
- Decide how many copies you can protect. Separate physical copies can help if one is lost or damaged, but every extra copy creates another place that must remain secure. BIP 93 (codex32) describes this as a balance between minimizing exposure and retaining enough copies to recover.
- Make sure you can follow the recovery process. Use the wallet’s documented recovery procedure and verify that you understand any required policy information or optional passphrase. Do not disclose the phrase to another person or enter it into an unverified service to “test” it.
A hardware signing device is an optional way to keep signing keys offline; it does not make a disclosed recovery phrase safe. Compare devices by their documented key isolation, transaction review, wallet-policy support, and recovery process rather than assuming all devices work alike.

What should you do if someone asks for your recovery phrase?
Do not provide it. Bitcoin.org’s scam guidance says legitimate support teams should never ask for a seed phrase or private key. Do not type a phrase into a support form, follow a message link to enter it, or respond to an unsolicited recovery prompt. A support request does not make disclosure safe.

Will quantum computers break Bitcoin?
No source cited here establishes that a cryptographically relevant quantum computer exists today or sets a confirmed date for one. Do not interpret public-key exposure as evidence that an attacker can currently derive Bitcoin private keys. BIP 360 is a Bitcoin proposal, not an activated network rule, and it does not introduce a post-quantum signature scheme.
Why Bitcoin proposals distinguish two exposure windows
BIP 360 distinguishes long-exposure risk, when a public key is available for a long time, from short-exposure risk during a transaction spend. The proposal says address reuse and outputs that expose public keys can increase long-exposure risk. Under existing signature mechanisms, a public key still has to be revealed to spend. These are claims and design considerations in a proposal, not evidence that quantum attacks on Bitcoin spending are currently practical.

What post-quantum standards do—and do not—change
On August 13, 2024, NIST announced approval of three post-quantum cryptography standards: FIPS 203, FIPS 204, and FIPS 205. FIPS 203 is a key-encapsulation mechanism standard; FIPS 204 and 205 are digital-signature standards designed to resist future quantum attacks. Their approval does not automatically change Bitcoin’s or another cryptocurrency’s signature rules. Adoption would require changes to the relevant protocol and wallet software.
