If an Android notification tap or action button opens the wrong screen, the destination is usually determined by the app’s notification code—not by a setting on your phone. Update the app and report the mismatch to its developer. If you build the app, check the notification’s PendingIntent or deep link, the Navigation destination, and the activity’s task and back-stack setup.
First, establish when the wrong screen appears
Check whether the same notification always opens the wrong destination, or whether the result changes depending on whether the app was already open. That pattern is useful to include in a support report, but it does not identify the cause by itself.

- Notification type and the action button tapped, if there is one
- The screen you expected to see
- The screen that actually opened
- Whether the app was closed, in the background, or already open
What you can do as an Android user
- Check Google Play or the app’s official distribution channel for an update, then try the notification again.
- If the problem persists, contact the app developer through its support channel. Include the details above and, if possible, a screenshot of the notification and the screen it opened.
Android notification settings can control matters such as whether notifications appear and how they alert you. They generally cannot change the screen destination that the app encoded in a notification action. Clearing cache or changing notification settings is therefore not a reliable fix for a misrouted destination.

How developers should trace and correct the route
Inspect the notification’s PendingIntent
A notification does not independently select a screen. The app supplies an action, commonly through a PendingIntent, that tells Android what to do when the person taps. Check both the notification’s content action (the main tap) and each action button. Confirm that each PendingIntent targets the intended activity or deep link and includes the correct destination arguments.
Also check whether different notifications unintentionally reuse an equivalent PendingIntent identity. Verify this in the app’s own debugging; it is one possibility to investigate, not a diagnosis that applies to every wrong-screen report.

Verify the Navigation destination and its host activity
Android Navigation supports explicit deep links to particular destinations, including destinations opened from notifications. Make sure the link points to the intended destination and that the activity it targets hosts the relevant NavHost. If the NavHost is not in the app’s default launch activity, the PendingIntent builder must target the activity that actually hosts it.
For programmatically created Navigation graphs, Android’s guidance recommends using TaskStackBuilder to create the deep-link PendingIntent. The required activity target matters when the destination graph is hosted outside the default launch activity. See Android’s Navigation deep-link guidance.

Separate destination routing from Back and task behavior
Opening the intended screen and opening it with the expected Back behavior are related but distinct concerns. For a regular activity reached from a notification, configure the activity hierarchy and task back stack so that Back returns through the expected app navigation. Android documents TaskStackBuilder and parent-activity configuration for this pattern.
A special activity shown only from a notification may have different task needs and may not need the same back stack as a normal in-app destination. Choose the behavior deliberately rather than treating every notification destination as an ordinary launch into the app. See Android’s guidance on navigating from notifications.

Remove notification trampolines when targeting Android 12 or later
For apps targeting Android 12 or later, Android restricts starting an activity from a service or broadcast receiver acting as a notification trampoline. A trampoline flow typically receives the notification tap in a service or receiver and then calls startActivity(). Instead, create a PendingIntent for the activity the user should see and attach it directly to the notification.
During testing, Android may log: “Indirect notification activity start (trampoline) from PACKAGE_NAME, this should be avoided for performance reasons.” You can also inspect the NotifInteractionLog section of the SystemUI auxiliary dump service. These diagnostics help identify a trampoline; they do not, by themselves, prove that every wrong destination has this cause. See Android 12’s notification trampoline behavior-change guidance.
