Android Explicit vs. Implicit Intents: Which Should You Use?

Use explicit intents for known destinations and your own services; use implicit intents when Android should find an app capable of a cross-app action.

Use an explicit intent when you know which Android component should receive a request—usually for navigation inside your app and for starting your own service. Use an implicit intent when you want Android to find an app that can handle an action, such as sharing content or opening a supported type of link. The choice is about how Android finds the recipient; either kind of intent can carry data and extras.

What is the difference between explicit and implicit intents?

An explicit intent names its destination component. For example, an app can create an intent for a particular activity with Intent(context, TargetActivity::class.java). Android sends it to that component rather than searching for a handler.

An implicit intent describes a task without naming a component. It can specify an action, data such as a URI or MIME type, and categories. Android compares those details with components’ intent filters and finds a matching handler. If more than one component matches, Android may present selection UI; an app can also use a chooser when the user should pick a recipient.

Intent resolution is driven by the component name, action, data, and categories. Extras carry information to the recipient, but do not determine which component receives the intent.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

When should you use each kind?

Situation Use Why
Navigate to a known activity in your app Explicit intent You know the destination and want deterministic delivery.
Start a service your app owns Explicit intent It identifies the intended service instead of leaving Android to resolve an unknown service.
Hand a task to another app, such as sharing content Implicit intent Android can find installed components that support the requested action.
Offer an activity as a handler for a supported action Implicit intent with a matching filter Android can discover the activity when another app requests that action.

Android Developers advises naming the component when starting a specific component in your app. Its cross-app guidance also cautions against implicit service starts: the caller cannot be sure which service will respond, and the user cannot see which service starts. Android’s intents and intent filters guide and guide to interacting with other apps explain these choices.

How does Android resolve an implicit intent?

Android checks whether an intent matches a component’s declared filter. The matching properties are action, data, and categories; a filter must cover the combinations the component actually handles.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
  • Action: The operation requested, such as viewing or sharing.
  • Data: A URI and, where applicable, a MIME type. URI matching can take scheme, host, port, and path into account.
  • Categories: Additional characteristics of the requested operation. For implicit activity launches through startActivity() or startActivityForResult(), the receiving activity’s filter must include CATEGORY_DEFAULT.

A mismatch in an applicable action, data, or category test means that filter will not match. When setting both a URI and MIME type, use setDataAndType(): Android’s guide notes that calling setData() or setType() clears the other value.

How should you declare an activity that accepts implicit intents?

Declare an intent filter for the actions and data your activity really supports. Include CATEGORY_DEFAULT when the activity is intended to receive implicit launches from startActivity() or startActivityForResult(). Keep distinct combinations in separate filters, or make sure the activity correctly handles every combination allowed by a broader filter.

A filter is a description of an implicit entry point, not an access-control rule. An explicit intent can reach its named component regardless of that component’s declared filters. Decide separately whether other apps should be able to access the component, and set android:exported intentionally. Use false for components that are not meant to be available externally. Android’s documentation states that, on Android 12 and later, an app with a component containing an intent filter but no explicit android:exported value cannot be installed.

What can go wrong, and how do you handle it?

  • The implicit activity has no handler: The requested action may not be supported by any installed app. Catch ActivityNotFoundException when starting an implicit activity and provide a useful fallback.
  • More than one app can handle the action: Android may show a selection interface. Use a chooser if users may want to select a different app for each handoff.
  • A filter matches combinations the activity cannot handle: Multiple action, data, and category entries can create broader combinations than intended. Separate the filters or ensure the activity supports each combination.
  • A service is started implicitly: Specify the service component instead. Since Android 5.0 (API level 21), calling bindService() with an implicit intent throws an exception.
  • A component is assumed private because it has a filter: Filters do not prevent explicit starts by another app. Review android:exported and component exposure independently.

For standard cross-app tasks and their expected intent details, consult Android’s common intents reference.
