If an achievement or trophy did not appear after you completed its requirement, first verify the game’s exact criteria. A delayed network notification or an unsynchronized platform list can make a successful unlock look missing. Sign out of the relevant Xbox, PlayStation Network, or Steam account, restart the console or PC, sign in again, synchronize the list when that option exists, and then repeat the requirement. If it still fails, the cause is probably a game bug or an account/platform synchronization problem that requires the publisher or platform support team.
Why an achievement or trophy can be missing
A missing pop-up is not proof that the requirement failed. Unlocking normally involves the game recording the condition, the account service accepting it, and the platform updating the player’s achievement or trophy list. Any delay between those stages can leave the notification or list temporarily behind.

The requirement was more specific than it appeared
Many objectives include conditions that are easy to overlook: a particular mission sequence, difficulty, game mode, character, item, or order of actions. Read the wording in the game’s achievement or trophy screen and compare it with the game’s current support information. “Complete the mission,” for example, may mean completing a named variant or finishing every preceding step rather than merely reaching the end of the level.

The notification or list is delayed
Network traffic and service delays can postpone the on-screen notification. The game may have registered the event even though the pop-up has not appeared. The platform list can also lag behind the game’s local state until the account reconnects and synchronizes.

The game or account did not record the event
A game-side defect, a damaged synchronization state, or a cross-platform progression mismatch can prevent the platform from receiving the unlock. Some supported games also disable achievements when console commands are used. Platform behavior can change after a game update, so a problem that appears permanent may be fixed—or introduced—by a later patch.
Do this first: a universal recovery sequence
Use this sequence before deleting saves, reinstalling the game, or starting a new run. It preserves your existing progress and addresses the most common notification and account-state problems.
- Read the exact criteria. Open the game’s achievement or trophy description and list every required condition, including mode, sequence, difficulty, and completion requirements.
- Confirm that the game is online when necessary. If the objective depends on a connected service, make sure the console or PC has a working connection. A notification can still be delayed after the requirement is met.
- Finish the current activity cleanly. Reach the stated end point, allow the game to save, and return to a normal menu if the game uses an explicit completion screen. Do not immediately force-close it while the result is being recorded.
- Sign out completely. Sign out of the Xbox, PlayStation Network, or Steam account used by the game. Suspending the game or changing profiles without signing out does not refresh the account session.
- Restart the device. Reboot the console or PC rather than only closing the game. This clears the current session and establishes a fresh connection when you sign back in.
- Sign in and synchronize. Log back into the same account. Use the platform’s list-synchronization command if one is available, and wait if the service is busy.
- Repeat the requirement. A refresh does not necessarily replay an event that was missed. Redo the objective from the point the game requires, then allow time for the notification and list to update.
This sequence is the common recommendation in official support guidance for Xbox, PlayStation, and cross-platform cases. If the achievement still does not unlock after a clean retry, treat it as a defect or synchronization failure rather than endlessly repeating random actions.

Xbox: check the requirement, refresh the account, and retry
Recommended Xbox steps
- Open the achievement description in the game and verify every condition.
- Allow for a network delay. The requirement may have registered without an immediate pop-up.
- Sign out of Xbox completely.
- Reboot the console.
- Sign in to the original Xbox account and check the achievement list.
- Redo the requirement if it is still absent.
Bethesda’s Xbox guidance says that when a player is certain all conditions were completed and refreshing did not resolve the issue, the player must perform the steps again and re-attempt the achievement. In practical terms, the sign-out and reboot refresh the account session; they do not grant the missing unlock automatically.
Console commands and disabled achievements
In games that support console commands, using a command can disable achievements for that session or save. Bethesda advises that rebooting the game typically re-enables achievements in supported titles. After restarting, load a state in which achievements are enabled and complete the requirement again. The exact behavior is game-specific, so consult the affected game’s current support page before assuming that an existing save can be repaired.
PlayStation: synchronize with PlayStation Network
Standard PlayStation recovery
- Read the trophy criteria again and identify any hidden sequence or mode condition.
- Sign out of PlayStation Network.
- Reboot the console.
- Sign back into the same PlayStation Network account.
- Select “Sync with PlayStation Network” from the trophy interface.
- Wait if PlayStation servers are busy, then check the trophy list.
- Repeat the criteria in the game if the trophy remains missing.
Dovetail’s support guidance also suggests two diagnostic tests when the normal refresh does not help: try the requirement with a new player profile, or attempt it offline. These tests are not substitutes for your main account. They help separate a profile or network synchronization problem from a game-wide trigger problem. If the trophy unlocks only on the test profile, the original account state is the more likely fault. If it fails in both situations, the game’s trigger or save state deserves closer investigation.

Steam and PC games
Refresh the Steam session
- Verify the in-game requirement, including any mode, order, or completion condition.
- Exit the game normally and sign out of Steam completely.
- Restart the PC.
- Sign back into the same Steam account and launch the game.
- Use the game or platform synchronization option when one is provided.
- Redo the requirement and allow time for the achievement list to update.
PC games that share progression with consoles can have an additional handoff between the game account and the platform account. A cross-save or cross-platform progression delay can therefore leave one platform’s list behind even when the game shows the progress elsewhere. Rockstar identifies network and synchronization delays as possible reasons for a trophy or achievement not appearing in a cross-platform situation.
When Epic or another platform is involved
If the game uses Epic or another PC service for achievements, apply the same account-refresh sequence and contact that service’s support channel if the list remains wrong. Use the account that actually owns and launched the game; changing launchers or profiles mid-session can make a valid completion appear to belong to a different account.

How to retry an achievement without wasting progress
After an account refresh, repeating the objective is often required. Make the retry controlled so you can tell whether the trigger worked.
- Start from a valid state. Load a save or begin a session in which the game’s achievement system is enabled. If you used console commands in a supported game, restart before attempting the objective again.
- Follow the wording literally. Do not substitute a similar mission, difficulty, or mode. Complete prerequisites in the order stated by the game.
- Keep one account active. Use the same Xbox, PlayStation Network, Steam, or linked game account throughout the attempt.
- Let the game finish saving. Remain in the game long enough for the completion state to be recorded before closing it.
- Check both signals. Look for the platform notification and the updated achievement or trophy list. One may arrive before the other.
If the requirement can be completed only once per save, do not overwrite your only working save before confirming that the platform received the event. When the game offers no way to repeat the objective, record the exact save, mode, and account state for support instead of experimenting blindly.
Cross-save and cross-platform progression problems
Cross-platform games can store progress in more than one place: the game’s own account, a platform profile, and sometimes a linked console or PC service. The game may display progress restored from another platform while the platform trophy or achievement service has not received a new event.
Use one platform and one account for the retry. Sign out of every relevant service, reboot, sign back in, and synchronize the list before replaying the requirement. If the achievement appears on one platform but not another, capture screenshots of both lists and note which device completed the objective. That information lets support determine whether the event was recorded but not transferred.
When to contact support
Contact the game publisher when the exact criteria were met, the clean sign-out and reboot sequence failed, and a repeat attempt still produces no unlock. Contact Microsoft, PlayStation, Steam, or Epic support when the game appears to have recorded the event but the platform list is wrong, or when the account cannot synchronize.
Support teams may investigate a missing event, but they may not be able to grant it manually. Bethesda explicitly states that its customer support cannot unlock achievements. In that situation, ask for confirmation of the trigger requirements, a known-bug status, or a supported recovery path rather than expecting a direct account edit.

- Game title, platform, and game version if displayed.
- The exact achievement or trophy name and its full criteria.
- Account or profile used, without sending a password or security code.
- Date and approximate time of the attempt, including time zone.
- Whether the game was online, offline, or using cross-save.
- The steps completed, including sign-out, reboot, synchronization, and retry.
- Screenshots showing in-game progress and the platform list when they disagree.
- Whether the objective fails on a second profile or in an offline test.
This information distinguishes a missed condition from a delayed notification and gives the publisher a reproducible case if the game has a known achievement bug.
Check for changes after updates
Achievement and trophy behavior is not permanent across all versions. A game update can change criteria, repair a trigger, or introduce a synchronization regression. Before labeling the unlock impossible, read the affected game’s current support page and any current platform notice. Treat older forum instructions as historical unless they match the version you are running.
What not to do
- Do not assume that a missing pop-up means the requirement definitely failed.
- Do not keep repeating the objective without first refreshing the account session and confirming the exact criteria.
- Do not switch profiles or platforms halfway through a retry and then expect the event to transfer automatically.
- Do not use console commands in a supported game when you need an achievement, unless the game’s documentation confirms they are safe.
- Do not provide support with passwords, authentication codes, or other security secrets.
The shortest reliable decision path
- Check every requirement, including hidden sequence and mode conditions.
- Wait for a possible service delay and inspect the list.
- Sign out, reboot, sign back in, and synchronize.
- Repeat the requirement on the same account and platform.
- Use a new profile or offline attempt only as a diagnostic test where the platform guidance recommends it.
- If the failure persists, report it to the publisher and the platform service with reproducible details.
A delayed notification is usually resolved by waiting or synchronizing; a persistent failure after a clean retry is evidence of a game, account, or platform problem. The distinction determines whether you should replay the objective or open a support case.
