Start with the FSR 4 support check
AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 (FSR 4) combines temporal upscaling with optional frame generation. It is not a universal graphics setting: both the graphics card and the game’s implementation must qualify. AMD’s launch announcement limited FSR 4 to Radeon RX 9000-series graphics cards. Later Adrenalin release notes say FSR 4 can be enabled in most games that support FSR 3.1 through DirectX 12, but “most” does not mean every FSR 3.1 title or every patch. The game developer, API, driver version, and renderer still determine whether the option works correctly.

AMD’s launch material cited more than 30 games at launch and 75 planned later that year. Those were 2025 launch-era figures, not a current support count. Check the game’s own graphics-options documentation and current patch notes before treating FSR 4 as supported.

Record exactly when the problem occurs. A crash during shader compilation points to a different cause than alternating brightness after enabling HDR, while ghost trails in motion are usually an image-reconstruction or frame-generation issue.

Use this order of operations
Perform the steps in order and retest after each major change. Reverting a change that had no effect keeps the final diagnosis understandable.
- Update the driver and the game. Install the current Adrenalin package for the GPU, apply every available game patch, and reboot Windows. Read the release notes for the exact driver you install; AMD changes both the supported-game matrix and known-issue list over time.
- Confirm the combination. Verify the card is a Radeon RX 9000-series model and that the title’s current build officially supports FSR 4. If the game offers multiple renderers, select its documented DirectX 12 path before testing.
- Reset shader and profile state. Use the shader-cache reset control in AMD Software, or the cache-clearing procedure documented by the game. Restore that game’s Adrenalin profile to defaults. Launch once with no other graphics changes. A stale shader compiled under a previous driver can survive an update and reproduce the same crash or corrupted texture.
- Remove software hooks. Temporarily turn off Radeon performance and recording overlays, platform FPS counters, chat overlays, ReShade, third-party injectors, and graphics mods. Do not leave several hooks disabled and then re-enable them together: add them back individually after a clean FSR 4 run.
- Establish a repeatable baseline. Load the same save or benchmark scene, select the game’s default FSR 4 quality preset, use normal sharpening, and leave frame generation off for the first pass. Note resolution, HDR, VRR, display count, fullscreen mode, and ray-tracing settings.
- Change one variable. Test quality mode, sharpening, frame generation, and ray-tracing load separately. Keep the scene and camera movement as similar as possible. This identifies whether the failure follows an option rather than the upscaler as a whole.
- Isolate display timing. If the defect appears only with HDR, VRR, alt-tab, a second monitor, or a particular fullscreen mode, turn off that feature, test one display, and compare borderless with exclusive fullscreen. Restore the feature after you know which combination triggers the fault.
- Check version-specific known issues. Compare your exact driver, GPU, game patch, and symptom with AMD’s release notes. A problem listed for one driver may be fixed, changed, or replaced in a later package.
- Escalate with a reproducible package. If the issue remains, capture the versions, settings, steps, and a short video or screenshot and send them to the game developer and AMD Support.
Fix crashes when FSR 4 is enabled
Crash before the main menu
Start with the least invasive changes: update, reboot, reset the shader cache, and restore the game’s driver profile. Then remove every overlay, injector, and mod before launching. If the game starts only after FSR 4 is disabled, leave the renderer and resolution unchanged and switch on FSR 4 using the default preset. A successful launch with the default preset indicates that a secondary option or hook is a better suspect than the basic FSR 4 path.
Do not copy an FSR configuration file from another game or force a hidden setting through a command line. Such changes can select an implementation the developer did not ship for your build. Verify the executable and API through the game’s launcher or graphics menu, then retest with a clean profile.

Some titles recompile shaders or recreate the swap chain when you change upscaling, HDR, resolution, or fullscreen mode. Make one change at the menu, wait for compilation to finish, and restart the game before making another. If the crash follows frame generation but not FSR 4 upscaling, keep frame generation off while you test quality modes and report the distinction.
Driver timeout during play
A timeout is not proof that the graphics card is physically failing. First remove overlays and mods, reset the cache, and test without frame generation. If ray tracing is enabled, reduce its load for the controlled run; a workload spike can expose a driver or game defect that does not appear in a simpler scene. Record whether Windows recovers to the desktop, whether the game closes, and whether the same scene reproduces the timeout.
Stop flicker and alternating frames
Test HDR, VRR, and displays separately
Flicker that appears only in HDR, only with variable refresh rate (VRR), or only after alt-tab points toward presentation timing rather than texture reconstruction. Turn HDR off in Windows and in the game, disable VRR temporarily, disconnect or disable the second display, and test one fullscreen mode at a time. If the flicker disappears, restore each feature individually until the failing combination is identified. Keep the working setting for play and include the failing combination in your report.

Compare fullscreen modes
Borderless and exclusive fullscreen can use different swap-chain paths. Test both at the same resolution and refresh rate. A menu or HUD that flickers only in one mode should be reported as a presentation or UI-composition issue, not described generally as “FSR 4 flicker.”
Exclude overlays and generated frames
Disable every overlay before changing image-quality settings. Then compare FSR 4 upscaling with frame generation off and on. Frame generation can make an existing timing or overlay conflict more visible because displayed frames are produced on a different schedule. It also introduces a separate artifact path, so keep it off until the base image is stable.
Reduce shimmering, ghosting, and unstable detail
Sharpening
Excessive sharpening exaggerates subpixel movement, foliage, wires, and thin geometry. Lower the game’s sharpening control and compare the same static camera view. If the crawling pattern decreases without changing performance, sharpening was amplifying reconstruction noise rather than fixing a resolution problem.
Quality mode
Move one step toward a higher-quality FSR 4 mode and keep sharpening constant. A higher-quality mode renders more internal pixels and can improve fine-detail stability at a performance cost. There is no universal best preset: judge the trade-off in the game and resolution you actually use.
Frame generation
Disable frame generation while diagnosing ghost trails. Compare a slow pan, a rapid camera turn, and a static scene. If trails appear only in generated frames, keep the upscaler enabled without generation and report the motion, HUD element, and setting that exposes the defect. Generated frames can also make UI or particle errors easier to notice even when the base rendered frames are clean.
Native-resolution comparison
Run the same scene at native resolution with FSR 4 off, then at the chosen FSR 4 mode. Native output provides a reference for whether a defect belongs to the game’s assets or to temporal reconstruction. Compare foliage, fences, hair, reflections, distant text, and moving objects rather than judging a single paused screenshot.

Repair broken HUD elements and menus
UI defects often come from how the game composites menus over the upscaled or generated image. Test borderless and exclusive fullscreen at the same output resolution, then remove ReShade and all mods. If the HUD breaks only with a modded interface, the mod must be updated for the game’s FSR 4 integration. If it breaks in an unmodified installation, capture the affected menu, resolution, display mode, HDR state, and FSR 4 preset for the developer.
Do not use a sharpening or quality-mode change as a permanent fix for a menu that is geometrically displaced or missing. Those controls affect reconstruction; they cannot correct a faulty UI layer or injection conflict.

These entries illustrate why “which driver fixes FSR 4?” has no single answer. A driver can contain a game-specific fix while another title has a new regression. Use the notes for your exact version and title rather than assuming that the newest number automatically resolves every artifact.
Build a controlled comparison
When the first fixes do not identify the cause, use a small test matrix. Keep the game scene, resolution, display, and camera path constant and record only the changed column.

Change one row at a time. If two changes are made together and the symptom disappears, repeat the test with only one change to find the actual trigger.
When to suspect hardware or a broader driver problem
FSR 4 is the leading suspect when the defect appears only in one supported game and disappears when FSR 4 is disabled. Suspect a broader graphics or system problem when multiple games show crashes, corruption occurs at native resolution, artifacts remain with every overlay and mod removed, or the system also shows display-driver resets outside games. Before drawing that conclusion, repeat the clean baseline after a reboot and confirm that the GPU is not overclocked or undervolted beyond its stable settings.

Do not repeatedly force the game to launch with unsupported settings. A stable non-FSR configuration is useful as a control, but it does not prove that the card cannot run FSR 4; it only shows that a particular software path is failing.

What to send to the developer and AMD Support
A useful report lets support reproduce the issue without guessing. Include:
- Game title, edition, executable version, and the latest installed patch.
- GPU model, system memory, Windows build, and AMD Software version.
- FSR 4 quality mode, sharpening value, frame-generation state, resolution, HDR and VRR state, refresh rate, and fullscreen mode.
- Whether the game uses DirectX 12 and whether the installation is unmodified.
- Every overlay, recorder, injector, ReShade preset, and mod that was enabled during the failure.
- The exact sequence that reproduces the crash or artifact, including the save, level, camera movement, or menu action.
- A screenshot or short video showing the flicker, texture corruption, ghosting, or broken UI; for a crash, include the time of the failure and any driver-timeout message.
- The result of each control test: native resolution, FSR 4 off, frame generation off, HDR/VRR off, one display, and a clean profile.
State whether the problem began after a game patch or driver change. That timeline helps support distinguish a regression from a persistent integration defect.
