Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchPC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11An “Access Denied” message on a USB drive is a symptom, not a single fault. The cause may be a bad port or failing device, NTFS ownership and permissions, a read-only flag, BitLocker encryption, an organization policy, or file-system damage. Identify which case you have before changing permissions, repairing the disk, or formatting it.
Work through the checks below in order. They begin with non-destructive tests and progress to commands that can alter access controls or repair metadata. If the drive contains irreplaceable files and is disconnecting, unusually slow, clicking, or showing the wrong capacity, stop before running repairs and consider professional data recovery.

First, identify exactly what is denied
Write down the complete message and the drive letter shown in File Explorer. “You don’t currently have permission to access this folder,” “Access is denied,” “The disk is write-protected,” and a request for a BitLocker password point to different remedies. Note whether you can see the drive in This PC, whether folders are visible, and whether you can copy a small, non-important file to it.

| What you observe | Most likely area | Safest next check |
|---|---|---|
| The drive does not appear, appears intermittently, or disconnects | Port, cable, power, firmware, or failing hardware | Try another port and another computer; avoid repairs until the device is stable |
| You can see the volume, but opening a folder says you need permission | NTFS owner or access-control list (ACL) | Back up accessible files, then inspect permissions from an elevated Command Prompt |
| You can read files but cannot create, delete, or modify them | Read-only attribute, policy, or permissions | Inspect DiskPart attributes and check whether the computer is managed |
| Windows asks for a password or recovery key | BitLocker encryption | Unlock with the correct password or recovery key; do not format |
| Windows reports a damaged file system, RAW volume, or repeated errors | Logical corruption or physical media failure | Copy or recover important data first; use repair commands only when the device is stable |
Protect the data before making changes
- Do not click Format, initialize the disk, create a new partition, or run
diskpart cleanwhile the data matters. Those actions can remove the information needed for recovery. - If the drive opens partially, copy the most valuable files to another disk before changing ownership or running a repair.
- Do not repeatedly reconnect a drive that is becoming hot, clicking, disappearing, or taking minutes to list a folder. Repeated power cycles can worsen a failing device.
- Use an administrator account only when a step explicitly requires it. Administrative rights can change ownership and permissions but cannot repair physically failed memory or a broken USB controller.
Rule out a port, device, or detection problem
A permissions command cannot help if Windows has not correctly detected the storage device. Microsoft’s USB and BitLocker troubleshooting guidance starts with basic detection checks.

- Safely eject the drive if it is currently visible. Unplug it, wait a few seconds, and connect it directly to a different USB port. Avoid an unpowered hub for this test.
- If the computer has both USB-A and USB-C ports, try the other connector type with a suitable adapter or cable. A damaged cable can provide enough power for a connection sound but not a stable data link.
- Test the drive on another computer. If it works there, copy your important files immediately and investigate the original computer’s policy, port, or firmware settings.
- Open Disk Management: right-click Start and choose Disk Management. Confirm that the expected disk and volume appear, note the capacity, and check whether a drive letter is assigned.
- If the volume is present without a letter, right-click the correct volume, choose Change Drive Letter and Paths, select Add, assign an unused letter, and try File Explorer again. Match the volume by size and label; never change the letter of a different disk.
- If the disk is missing, shows a capacity of zero, repeatedly vanishes, or is marked as having an unknown partition, do not create a new volume when files matter. Those symptoms need hardware diagnosis or data recovery rather than an access-control change.
On systems where USB boot support is relevant, firmware settings can also affect detection. Check the computer maker’s firmware documentation rather than changing unrelated boot options at random.
Unlock BitLocker-encrypted removable storage
BitLocker can make a healthy USB drive appear inaccessible until it is unlocked. In File Explorer, right-click the drive and choose Unlock Drive (the wording can vary slightly by Windows edition), then enter the BitLocker password. If prompted, provide the recovery key associated with that encrypted drive.
If you do not have the password or recovery key
Windows cannot bypass BitLocker encryption. Look for the saved recovery key in the location where it was stored when encryption was enabled, or ask the person or organization that encrypted the drive. Do not format the volume to remove the prompt: formatting destroys the existing file-system references and does not recover encrypted files.

When an organization controls the drive
A company or school may enforce removable-storage restrictions. On a managed computer, contact the administrator before changing policy or ownership. A policy named Removable Disks: Deny write access can block saving, deleting, or modifying files even though the drive is visible. It is commonly found in the Local Group Policy Editor under Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Removable Storage Access. If the setting is enforced by domain or device management, a local administrator may not be allowed to override it.
Repair NTFS ownership and permissions
NTFS stores an owner and a discretionary access control list (DACL) for files and folders. If the drive came from another Windows installation, was restored from a backup, or has permissions that exclude your account, Explorer can show the volume while denying a particular folder. The takeown command makes an administrator the owner; icacls displays or modifies DACLs.
Use an elevated Command Prompt
- Back up every file you can still read.
- Right-click Start, choose Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin), and approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Confirm the USB drive letter in File Explorer immediately before running a command. In the examples below, replace
E:andE:PrivateFolderwith the verified path. A wrong letter can change permissions on another disk. - Inspect the current permissions first:
icacls "E:PrivateFolder" - Take ownership of only the affected folder and its contents:
takeown /f "E:PrivateFolder" /r /d Y
The/roption recurses through files and subfolders. The command can report failures for files that are locked, encrypted, or damaged. - Grant your current Windows account full control on that folder tree:
icacls "E:PrivateFolder" /grant "%USERNAME%":F /t /c/tapplies the change to contained files and folders;/ccontinues while reporting errors. - Close and reopen File Explorer, then test one folder and copy a small file. If access is restored, stop there rather than broadening permissions across the entire disk.
Important NTFS limitations and cautions
- These ACL commands apply to NTFS permissions. USB media formatted as FAT32 or exFAT does not use Windows NTFS ACLs in the same way, so an ACL reset is not the appropriate fix.
- If
%USERNAME%is not the account that should receive access, specify the correct local or domain account, such asDOMAINUser, after confirming its spelling. - Taking ownership does not decrypt BitLocker data and does not repair a failing disk.
- Do not run a recursive permission reset on the whole drive merely because one folder is denied. Replacing inherited permissions can remove intentional restrictions and can make later troubleshooting harder.
- If you need to set a different owner or restore inheritance, first export or record the existing ACL with
icacls. Make one change at a time and verify the result before proceeding.
Clear a software read-only attribute with DiskPart
A read-only disk or volume can look like a permissions problem because Windows allows viewing but rejects writes. DiskPart can inspect and clear the software attribute. It cannot override a physical write-protect switch, failing flash memory, or an organization policy.

- Open Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Enter
diskpart, thenlist disk. Compare the listed sizes with the USB drive. Do not guess the disk number. - Select the verified disk:
select disk N, replacingNwith the correct number. - Inspect its state:
attributes disk. If it reports Read-only: Yes, clear that software flag withattributes disk clear readonly. - For a volume-level flag, enter
list volume, select the matching volume by size and letter withselect volume N, inspect it withattributes volume, and, if appropriate, runattributes volume clear readonly. - Type
exit, unplug and reconnect the drive, and test a small write.
DiskPart also contains destructive commands. Never use clean, delete, or partition-creation commands as an attempt to remove write protection when data is important. Some USB sticks and SD-card adapters have a physical lock switch; move it to the unlocked position while disconnected, then reconnect the device. If the attribute returns immediately, the controller or flash media may be failing.
Check and repair file-system errors with CHKDSK
Microsoft defines chkdsk as checking a volume’s file system and metadata for logical and physical errors. It is useful after an unsafe removal or corruption, but it is not a substitute for data recovery from failing hardware.
Check without changing the disk
In an elevated Command Prompt, run:
chkdsk E:
Replace E: with the confirmed letter. This reports the file-system condition without requesting repairs. Read the result for messages about errors, bad sectors, or an inability to open the volume.

Repair logical errors with /f
After copying important data and confirming that the drive is stable, run:
chkdsk E: /f
The /f switch fixes logical file-system errors. Windows may need exclusive access, so close Explorer windows and any applications using the drive. On a very large or heavily populated disk, the operation can take a long time. Keep the computer powered and do not unplug the USB device while it runs.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Locate physical errors with /r
Use chkdsk E: /r only when you understand the risk and have protected the data. The /r option includes logical repair and searches for unreadable sectors, attempting to recover readable information. It can take substantially longer than /f, especially on a large or degraded drive. Repeated read failures, a drive that disconnects during the scan, or a rapidly increasing number of bad sectors are reasons to stop and seek recovery help instead of running the command again.

If Windows identifies the volume as RAW, CHKDSK may report that the file-system type cannot be determined. Do not respond by formatting the volume when files matter; a recovery specialist may be able to reconstruct the data.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the drive is physically failing
Access denial combined with clicking, grinding, overheating, a burnt smell, severe slowness, a changing capacity, or repeated disconnects points beyond normal permissions. Flash drives can fail without warning, and an external hard drive can have a damaged cable, enclosure, power supply, or internal mechanism.
- Stop writing to the drive and disconnect it safely if possible.
- Do not run repeated CHKDSK passes, initialize the disk, or attempt a format.
- Record the symptoms and, if the drive remains stable, make a sector-by-sector image to separate storage using a recovery workflow appropriate for the device.
- For irreplaceable data, consult a professional data-recovery service before further testing. Tell the provider whether BitLocker was enabled and whether any repair command has already run.
- Replace the storage only after diagnosis confirms that the original media or enclosure is defective. A replacement does not recover files from the old device.
Choose the least risky remedy for the diagnosed cause
| Cause | Remedy | Privilege or access needed | Data risk and reversibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Port, cable, firmware, or unstable hardware | Different port and computer; hardware diagnosis | Usually standard user; firmware changes may require administrator access | Low while testing; repeated reconnects can worsen a failing device |
| BitLocker encryption | Unlock with password or recovery key | Valid credential or organization administrator | Unlocking is reversible; formatting is destructive |
| Removable-storage policy | Ask the device administrator to review “Removable Disks: Deny write access” | IT or policy-management rights | Policy review is low risk; unauthorized changes may violate workplace rules |
| NTFS owner or ACL | Inspect with icacls; target takeown and icacls /grant to the affected folder |
Elevated administrator account | Changes access control; recursive resets can remove intended restrictions |
| Software read-only flag | Inspect and clear the selected disk or volume attribute in DiskPart | Elevated administrator account | Attribute inspection is safe; selecting the wrong disk is dangerous |
| Logical file-system corruption | Run chkdsk status check, then /f if data is protected |
Elevated administrator account | Repair changes metadata; back up first |
| Physical media failure | Stop use and seek recovery; replace only after diagnosis | Recovery specialist for irreplaceable data | Highest risk; further writes and scans can reduce recovery prospects |
Verify access and prevent a repeat
After the specific fix, test the drive in a controlled way: open a previously denied folder, copy one small test file, rename it, read it back, and delete it. If only one operation fails, return to the corresponding permissions, policy, or read-only check instead of applying a broader reset.
Use Safely Remove Hardware before unplugging the drive, keep a second copy of important files, and avoid relying on one USB device as the only archive. If the drive is encrypted, store its recovery key separately from the device. On a managed computer, document any policy restriction so the same denial is not mistaken for corruption later.
