If only movies or videos with AC-3 audio have gone silent, check codec and player support first. If sound is missing from every app, troubleshoot Windows audio, the driver, and audio services instead. These symptoms have different causes—and a Windows 11 update does not necessarily remove AC-3 from every PC.
First, identify what stopped playing
Test a known-working audio file or system sound, then try the affected movie or video in another player already installed on your PC. If other apps play sound but the AC-3 media does not, focus on the file’s codec and the player. If all apps are silent, follow the system-wide Windows audio steps below.

- Only AC-3 files fail: codec availability or player compatibility is a likely lead.
- One player fails, but another works: investigate the failing player’s codec support or settings.
- All audio fails: check Windows updates, the audio driver, output device, and audio services.
Microsoft describes AC-3, also called Dolby Digital, as a codec used for multichannel audio. A missing or unsupported codec can prevent media playback. Microsoft’s Windows Media Player troubleshooting guidance recommends checking file compatibility and codec support.
If only AC-3 files fail
Check whether Windows 11 24H2 is relevant
Microsoft says that, beginning with Windows 11 version 24H2, AC-3 is no longer included with Windows by default. Microsoft also says some device manufacturers preinstall it, and that upgrading to 24H2 from an earlier Windows version retains the codec. The change is therefore especially relevant to a clean installation or a device without manufacturer-installed AC-3; it does not mean every Windows 11 update removes AC-3 from every PC. See Microsoft’s explanation of Windows Media Player errors and codec availability and the Microsoft supported-codecs documentation.

- [Crystal Clean Hi-Res Sound] – The USB Type A to TOSLINK Connector delivers crisp and clear High-Resolution sound at 48KHz/24-bit, 96KHz/24-bit, 192KHz/24-bit with great clarity and rich audio details.
- [Plug & Play] – No need for a driver or external power. Works with Windows and Mac OS computer, laptop, PC with USB Type A port.
- [Compact and Durable] – Made with Aluminum alloy case and braided cable, the adapter isolates EM/RF interference and offers great durability as well. Measured at 0.6in x 0.6in x 8in (cable included), this adapter is super portable to carry.
- [Important Note] – This adapter is for computers ONLY and does NOT support TV, Xbox, or Switch for audio output.
To check your Windows version, open Settings > System > About and look under Windows specifications. Also consider whether Windows was upgraded or installed cleanly. Check the PC manufacturer’s support information for your exact model and the media player’s documentation for AC-3 support.
Try a player that supports AC-3
If just one app fails, test the same file in another player whose current documentation confirms AC-3 support. Microsoft’s built-in codec guidance says additional codecs may be needed for formats outside the supported list. Its references to certain codecs in Microsoft Store do not establish an AC-3 solution, so do not assume a Store extension will restore Dolby Digital playback.

- [Convert USB Port to SPDIF Transmitter] – Cubilux S/PDIF Output Adapter lets you transmit the optical audio signal from the USB Type C port of computers to soundbars, home audio system, external DAC or amplifier to enjoy 5.1 surround sound.
- [For Output ONLY] – This converter cannot be used in the opposite direction, not for receiving SPDIF signals from source devices like DACs/AMPs, not for recording audio.
- [Support 5.1 & Stereo Audio, NOT for 7.1] – This adapter can output stereo optical signal without any setup or software, and with a media player to decode 5.1 files and proper setting, it can output 5.1 surround sound, but this adapter does NOT support 7.1 surround sound due to the limitation of the USB port.
- [NOT for Partial-Featured USB Port] – This adapter is designed for computers and is not compatible with devices that devices with only partial-featured USB ports, such as TVs, Car USB ports, speakers’ USB ports, etc.
- [Crystal Clean Hi-Res Sound] – The USB Type C to TOSLINK Connector delivers crisp and clear sound from 48 KHz/24-bit to 192 KHz/24-bit with great clarity and rich audio details.
Avoid unverified codec downloads
The Microsoft pages cited here do not identify a universal standalone Microsoft AC-3 download for affected systems. Do not treat an unverified codec download or sideloading procedure as Microsoft’s official fix. If you choose a third-party player or media conversion tool, verify its current AC-3 support and licensing terms. Converting media you own to a format supported by your intended player can be an alternative, but it will not restore AC-3 decoding system-wide.

Use Microsoft’s post-update troubleshooting sequence when sound has disappeared across apps. These steps address Windows audio problems, not a missing AC-3 decoder by itself. Follow them in order, testing sound after each change.

- Install available Windows updates: open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install any available updates, and restart the PC.
- Update the audio driver: open Device Manager > Sound, video and game controllers, right-click or select your audio device, choose Update driver, follow the prompts, and restart.
- Roll back a recently changed driver if needed: if general audio stopped immediately after the update, open the audio device’s Properties > Driver tab and choose Roll Back Driver, if the option is available. Restart and test. Microsoft’s instructions are at Fix audio stops working after a Windows update.
- Restart Windows audio services: search for and open
services.msc. Restart Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder, then test sound again.
Do not roll back a driver solely because AC-3 files fail on version 24H2: Microsoft documents the codec-inclusion change separately from its driver troubleshooting guidance.

Confirm the output device and settings
Check that Windows is sending audio to the intended output device, such as your speakers or headphones, and review that device’s sound settings. If Windows is playing through the wrong output, changing codec settings will not restore audible sound.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTest with audio enhancements off
Microsoft notes that audio enhancements can cause sound problems. If the issue appears related to processing or a particular output, turn off enhancements for that device and test again. This check can help with general audio trouble; it does not install or supply an AC-3 decoder.
