First check which stations your address may receive and whether they broadcast on VHF, UHF, or both. Reception depends on your home and antenna placement, so a channel map is a starting point—not a guarantee.
Check which local stations may reach your home
Enter your location in the FCC DTV Reception Map to see predicted digital TV signals. The map models reception using a traditional outdoor antenna 30 feet above ground. That is an assumption in the prediction, not a promise about what an antenna at your home will receive. The FCC notes that terrain, buildings, trees, weather, and receiving equipment affect actual reception; results may be significantly lower in very hilly areas.

Use the map to identify stations and their directions, then treat your own setup as the final test. An advertised antenna range cannot account for every home’s obstructions or signal conditions.

Check broadcast bands, not just channel numbers
A channel number shown in a guide may be a station’s virtual channel; it does not necessarily identify the frequency band it uses to broadcast. Check the actual broadcast-channel information for the stations you want, then make sure the antenna supports the required VHF and/or UHF bands. Stations in the same market can use different bands.

Pick an indoor, attic, or outdoor location
For an indoor antenna, start high up, near a window or wall facing the station direction, with as clear a path as practical. Hills, trees, nearby buildings, and some construction materials can weaken reception. If an indoor location is obstructed, a higher position such as an attic or an outdoor location may help, though no placement guarantees reception at a specific address.
The FCC consumer alert says, “The location of an indoor antenna is key.” It also recommends trying a different direction and moving the antenna away from other electronic equipment if reception is poor.

Connect the antenna and scan for channels
- Connect the antenna’s coaxial cable to the TV’s antenna or RF input. If your television has no antenna connector, check its specifications before buying equipment.
- In the TV’s settings, choose Antenna, Air, or Broadcast as the signal source—not Cable.
- Open the tuner or channel settings and run Channel Scan, Auto Scan, Auto Program, or the similarly named option. Menu labels vary by model; use the TV manual if you cannot find it.
- When the scan finishes, check whether the stations you want appear. Scan again after moving the antenna, since the tuner needs to search from the new position.
Check whether your TV needs extra equipment
Many TVs have a digital tuner and an antenna input built in. An older analog TV without a digital tuner may need an external digital converter or tuner; a set without an antenna connector may also require a compatible solution. Verify your specific TV’s tuner and connections before purchasing a converter.
Free over-the-air reception does not require an internet connection or monthly pay-TV subscription. The available lineup depends on which local signals your antenna can receive.

Troubleshoot missing or unstable channels
- No channels found: Confirm the TV is set to antenna, air, or broadcast mode; check that the coax is firmly connected; then run a fresh scan. If the TV lacks a digital tuner, check whether it needs a compatible converter.
- Some stations are missing: Check their actual broadcast bands and confirm the antenna supports them. Try a higher position, a clearer location, or a different direction, then scan again.
- Picture breaks up or drops out: Inspect cable connections and nearby obstructions. Move the antenna and rescan after each change. Start with the antenna connected directly to one TV; a splitter, long cable run, or other distribution hardware can affect the setup.
An amplifier is not an automatic fix. Antennas Direct’s setup guidance recommends trying the antenna without one first; whether amplification helps depends on the installation. If you are troubleshooting, test a direct connection before adding an amplifier or splitter.

To distribute an antenna signal to multiple TVs, you may need a splitter and additional coaxial cable. First confirm reception with the antenna connected directly to one TV. That establishes whether the antenna’s placement and scan work before you add distribution equipment.
