AC-3, also called Dolby Digital, is an audio codec for multichannel sound, including surround sound. Windows 11 version 24H2 no longer includes AC-3 by default, according to Microsoft. That can make a media file’s audio stop playing after an update or behave differently on a newly installed PC—but the result also depends on the computer’s installation history, any codec supplied by its manufacturer, and the app playing the file.
What AC-3 audio is
AC-3 is an audio codec: software used to encode and decode sound. It is also known as Dolby Digital and can carry multichannel, or “surround sound,” audio. A video file may contain AC-3 as its audio track, so a player needs a compatible decoder to play that sound. Microsoft describes AC-3 and its multichannel use in its Windows Media Player troubleshooting guidance.

Why a Windows update can affect AC-3
Microsoft says AC-3 was included with Windows before Windows 11 version 24H2, but “Beginning with Windows 11, version 24H2, the AC-3 codec is no longer included with Windows.” In practical terms, a Windows installation that previously had a decoder available may not have the same default codec availability after a major version change. Microsoft’s supported-codecs documentation and its troubleshooting page describe the inclusion change.

Microsoft says many device manufacturers preinstall an AC-3 codec and that upgrades from an earlier Windows version retain AC-3 in the circumstances it describes. A PC upgraded from an earlier release can therefore differ from one with a clean Windows installation, even when both run version 24H2. Microsoft’s documentation explains what changed, but does not state why; it does not establish licensing as the reason.

How to check why AC-3 playback stopped
- Check the Windows release. Open Settings → System → About and look under Windows specifications. The documented change begins with Windows 11 version 24H2.
- Consider the installation history. Determine whether Windows was upgraded from an earlier version or installed cleanly. Microsoft says upgraded systems retain AC-3 in the case it describes, so version alone may not explain the difference.
- Check for a manufacturer-provided codec. On an OEM PC, look at the manufacturer’s support page for the exact model and any bundled media software. Microsoft says many manufacturers preinstall AC-3, but does not identify one universal package.
- Test the affected app. Try the same file in the application where the problem occurs and, if available, in another player that explicitly supports AC-3. Codec availability in Windows and decoder support in an individual app are separate questions.
What to do on Windows N editions
Windows 10 and Windows 11 N editions omit some media features. Microsoft lists Dolby Digital/AC-3 support in the Media Feature Pack for these editions. To install it, go to Settings → Apps → Optional features, choose the option to add an optional feature, find Media Feature Pack, and install it. Restart Windows when installation finishes. Microsoft’s Media Feature Pack guidance covers Windows N editions.
What if the codec is missing or one app still cannot play the file?
Use a player or codec solution that explicitly supports AC-3, and verify that the particular application can use it. A Microsoft Q&A response suggests third-party players such as VLC as an option, but community guidance is not an official Microsoft compatibility guarantee or endorsement. Check the software publisher’s current compatibility information before installing anything.

Do not assume that installing a general codec pack will fix every application. A media player may use its own decoders, while a specialist video editor or disc-authoring tool may have separate format support requirements. For those programs, check the vendor’s documentation for AC-3 import or playback support.
