Start with the exact message on screen. If WordPress says “Error establishing a database connection”, verify the four database settings in wp-config.php, then check the database server, quota, and user permissions. If the connection succeeds but Network Setup fails, check the Multisite constants, table prefix, addressing mode, rewrite rules, and the network’s global tables. Back up the database and files before changing configuration or tables.

Identify which failure you have
Multisite installation errors are easier to fix when you separate a transport problem from a network-structure problem. A connection error happens before WordPress can read the database. A network-table error means WordPress connected but could not find or create the tables that describe the network. A site that works at the original URL while subsites fail usually has a domain, path, rewrite, DNS, or network-table problem.

| What you see | Most likely area | First checks |
|---|---|---|
| Error establishing a database connection immediately | Credentials, database host, server availability, quota, or permissions | DB_NAME, DB_USER, DB_PASSWORD, DB_HOST; database status; account quota; user privileges |
| Network Setup does not create the Multisite tables | Wrong database or prefix, failed table creation, incomplete constants, or blocked Multisite functionality | Active database, $table_prefix, WP_ALLOW_MULTISITE, plugin conflicts, and host policy |
| Main site works but a new subsite fails | Network records, stored domain or path, DNS, or rewrite configuration | wp_blogs, wp_site, generated rewrite rules, and the selected subdomain or subdirectory mode |
| One or more database tables are unavailable | Missing global network tables, failed upgrade, or collation issue in a legacy installation | Required global tables, database error logs, table prefix, and upgrade history |
| Redirects or 404 errors after database work | Web-server routing rather than database connectivity | Generated .htaccess or equivalent server rules, DNS, and network addressing mode |
Back up before touching configuration or tables
Unless the installation is genuinely disposable, export the database and copy the WordPress files before editing wp-config.php, replacing rewrite rules, or repairing rows. Keep the backup outside the web root and confirm that it can be opened or restored. A database repair that fixes one table but damages domains, paths, users, or serialized settings can be harder to undo than the original failure.
- Save a complete database dump, not only the tables that appear to be missing.
- Copy
wp-config.php, the web-server configuration, and the WordPress files. - Record the current database name, host, table prefix, site URL, and whether the intended network uses subdomains or subdirectories.
- Make one change at a time so the next error identifies the failed assumption.
Fix an immediate database connection error
Check the four settings in wp-config.php
Open the configuration file for the WordPress installation that you are converting to Multisite. Confirm that these values exactly match the database account supplied by the host:

DB_NAME— the database that contains the existing WordPress tables.DB_USER— the database user assigned to that database.DB_PASSWORD— the current password for that user, including special characters and capitalization.DB_HOST— the database server name or address. It is not alwayslocalhost; some hosts require a named database server or a port.
Do not copy credentials from a different site on the account. A valid username and password can still produce the same error if they point to another database, another host, or a user without privileges on the selected database.
Confirm the server is reachable and the account is healthy
Ask the host or inspect its control panel to confirm that the database server is running and accepting connections. Check whether the account has reached its database-size or resource quota. A full quota can prevent table creation even when existing pages continue to load. Also ask whether the host has disabled the database or network functionality required for Multisite.

The database user must be able to read the existing WordPress tables and create or alter the tables needed by the network. If the user authenticates but lacks those privileges, the initial site may appear healthy while Network Setup fails. Have the host confirm permissions for the exact database named by DB_NAME.
Retest the original site
Before attempting network conversion, load the original single-site dashboard and front end. If the single site cannot connect reliably, stop there; Multisite cannot correct a broken base installation. Restore the last known-good configuration if a credential edit caused the connection error.
Prepare the single-site installation for Network Setup
Make sure Pretty Permalinks work
Multisite relies on WordPress rewrite handling. Confirm that the existing site can use a non-default permalink structure and that ordinary posts resolve without a manual index.php suffix. Fix the single-site rewrite configuration first; otherwise a successful database conversion can leave every subsite returning 404 errors.

Deactivate active plugins temporarily
Deactivate active plugins while creating the network. Plugins can add rewrite rules, block dashboard actions, or expect a single-site table layout. Do not delete them. After the network is working, reactivate compatible plugins deliberately and test the main site and a new subsite after each group.
Enable Multisite in the correct place
Add the following line to wp-config.php:
define( 'WP_ALLOW_MULTISITE', true );
Place it above the file’s stop-editing marker, commonly shown as /* That's all, stop editing! Happy publishing. */. If the constant is below that marker or inside a conditional that never runs, the Network Setup screen will not be enabled.
Run Tools → Network Setup
- Sign in to the administrator account for the working single site.
- Open Tools → Network Setup.
- Choose Sub-domains or Sub-directories according to your DNS, server, and URL requirements.
- Enter the network title and administrator email requested by the screen.
- Run the setup and save the generated instructions before leaving the page.
If the screen reports a connection error, return to the database checks rather than repeatedly submitting the form. If it reports missing tables or cannot complete creation, record the exact table name and database error, then check the selected database and prefix.
Choose the right network addressing mode
| Mode | What it requires | Typical failure after installation |
|---|---|---|
| Subdomains | DNS and the web server must route each site hostname to the WordPress installation. Wildcard or equivalent host configuration may be needed. | A subsite hostname does not resolve, reaches another virtual host, or redirects because the DNS or server configuration is incomplete. |
| Subdirectories | The server must pass paths under the main site to WordPress, and rewrite rules must be installed correctly. | A subsite path returns a 404 or the main site’s content because the rewrite rules were not replaced with the network rules. |
The choice is not a cosmetic setting. It determines the domains or paths stored for sites in the network and the server rules needed to reach them. If your host cannot support the selected mode, choose the mode it can route or use host-supported Multisite.
Copy every generated constant and rewrite rule
After Network Setup, WordPress displays a block of constants for wp-config.php and a separate set of rewrite instructions. Copy the constants exactly as shown for this installation. Do not substitute values from another network, change the prefix, or place the block below the stop-editing marker.

Replace the existing WordPress rules in .htaccess with the generated Multisite rules when the server uses Apache. If the site uses another web server, configure the equivalent rules for that server instead of adding an Apache file that the server ignores. A database can be completely correct while a missing rewrite configuration produces redirects, login loops, or 404 responses.
Check the Multisite tables when the connection succeeds
A completed network has global tables in the same database as the original installation. With the default prefix, the expected names include:
| Expected table |
|---|
wp_blogs |
wp_blogmeta |
wp_blog_versions |
wp_registration_log |
wp_signups |
wp_site |
wp_sitemeta |
Replace wp_ with the actual value of $table_prefix in your installation. For example, a prefix of abc_ means the global tables begin with abc_, not wp_. Looking for the default names in a database that uses a custom prefix can falsely suggest that the tables are missing.
If wp_site or wp_blogs is empty
Empty network tables indicate that the network records were not written, not necessarily that the database connection is broken. Confirm that Network Setup targeted the same database shown in DB_NAME and used the same prefix as the existing tables. Check the database error log for a failed insert or permission error. Do not fill the tables with a generic SQL snippet: domain, path, dates, table prefix, and administrator values are specific to the installation.

If the tables do not exist at all
Possible causes include an interrupted setup, a wrong database, a different prefix, or a host policy that prevents Multisite table creation. Compare the table list with the original WordPress tables and the prefix in wp-config.php. If the original site is in the wrong database, correct the configuration or restore the verified database rather than creating a second, empty network in the wrong location.

If WordPress reports unavailable global tables
Inspect all required global tables, not only the table named in the message. Review database error logs and check whether a legacy upgrade introduced a collation incompatibility. A table can exist but remain unusable if its schema or collation is incompatible with the rest of the installation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the main site can work while subsites fail
Network records are incomplete
The original site’s tables can load normally even when the network’s wp_site and wp_blogs records are absent or incorrect. Check that the network row and the main site row contain the intended domain and path for this installation.
The stored domain or path does not match the request
Compare the address in the browser with the domain and path stored for the network and site. A mismatch can cause redirects to the wrong hostname, a loop between HTTP and HTTPS, or a request that never reaches WordPress. Correct the values using an installation-specific procedure and keep a backup before editing them.
DNS or virtual-host routing is missing
In subdomain mode, the new hostname must resolve to the server that hosts WordPress. The server must also recognize that hostname as part of the network. If DNS points elsewhere, WordPress never gets a chance to read wp_blogs.
Rewrite rules still describe a single site
In subdirectory mode, old single-site rules commonly send every request to the main site or return a 404. Reapply the generated network rules and reload the web server if its configuration requires a reload.
Best Value
Choose the least invasive recovery method
| Situation | Preferred approach | Why |
|---|---|---|
| New installation with no valuable content | Fresh Multisite installation | Recreates the database and configuration cleanly when there is nothing to preserve. |
| Existing site with content and users | Repair the existing database and configuration | Preserves the current site, provided a rollback backup exists. |
| Dashboard Network Setup works | Dashboard setup | Shows installation-specific constants and rewrite instructions. |
| Dashboard cannot complete but shell access is available | WP-CLI | Runs the network installation from the command line and writes the required constants. |
| Database damage is broad or the last known-good state is clear | Restore a verified backup | A controlled rollback is safer than guessing at multiple rows or schemas. |
| Host controls database privileges or DNS | Host-supported Multisite | The provider can change permissions, quotas, server routing, or policy settings unavailable to a site administrator. |
Use WP-CLI when the dashboard cannot finish
WP-CLI provides the wp core multisite-install command for installing Multisite from scratch. It can create the network tables and add the required constants to wp-config.php. Run it from the WordPress installation directory with a database backup in place, and provide the URL, network title, and administrator values required by the command for your installation.
wp core multisite-install
After the command completes, inspect the resulting wp-config.php rather than assuming every server setting was handled. Apache rewrite rules still need to be configured, and subdomain mode still needs DNS and virtual-host routing. If the command reports a database error, use the same credential, host, quota, and permission checks as a dashboard failure.
Recommended Free Tools
Handle manual SQL repair cautiously
Manual SQL is appropriate only when you understand the existing schema and have a tested rollback. It may be necessary when a network row was partially written or the dashboard cannot access the affected screen, but there is no safe universal insert statement. The correct values depend on the network domain, path, dates, table prefix, site identifiers, and administrator data.
- Export the affected database before running any statement.
- Use the installation’s actual prefix; never assume
wp_. - Verify the domain and path against the URL users must access.
- Preserve the data types and relationships expected by the WordPress version in use.
- Check the result in the database and in the WordPress dashboard before making another change.
If you cannot explain what each statement changes or cannot restore the backup, stop and ask the host or a WordPress database professional to perform the repair.
Test after the database repair
- Load the main site front end and dashboard.
- Open the network administration area and confirm the network is recognized.
- Create a test subsite using the selected addressing mode.
- Visit the subsite’s front end, dashboard, login, and a sample post.
- Check that permalinks resolve without redirects or 404 responses.
- Review the database error log and web-server error log for new failures.
- Reactivate plugins in small groups, testing the main site and test subsite after each group.
If the main site passes but the test subsite does not, return to the domain/path, DNS, and rewrite checks rather than changing database credentials that are already proven to work.
What to ask your hosting provider
Give the provider the exact error text, the time it occurred, the database host, and whether the original single site still works. Ask them to verify:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- the database server is running and reachable from the web server;
- the account has not reached its database quota;
- the database user has the privileges needed to create and modify tables;
- the host has not disabled Multisite or required network features;
- the selected subdomain or subdirectory mode is supported by DNS and the web server;
- the server’s error log contains no permission, collation, or connection failure.
Host-supported Multisite is often the safer route when you cannot change database grants, DNS, virtual hosts, or server rewrite rules yourself.
A compact recovery sequence
- Copy the WordPress files and create a restorable database backup.
- Record the exact error and determine whether it is a connection, table, routing, or permission failure.
- Verify that the original single site and Pretty Permalinks work.
- Deactivate active plugins temporarily.
- Confirm
WP_ALLOW_MULTISITEis above the stop-editing marker. - Run Tools → Network Setup and select the mode your DNS and server can support.
- Copy the generated constants exactly into
wp-config.php. - Replace the single-site rewrite rules with the generated network rules, or configure the equivalent rules for your web server.
- Check
DB_NAME,DB_USER,DB_PASSWORD,DB_HOST, user permissions, quota, prefix, and database-server status if the error remains. - Inspect the prefixed global tables, especially
wp_siteandwp_blogs, when the connection works but sites are missing. - Test the main site and a new subsite before reactivating plugins.
- Escalate to the host or restore the verified backup instead of applying unadapted SQL.
The safest fix is the smallest one that restores a known-good connection, creates the network tables with the correct prefix, and leaves DNS and rewrite behavior consistent with the addressing mode you selected.
