Use this order for a safe first setup
The post-install sequence is a gate, not a collection of optional tweaks. Each step removes a dependency for the next one: the hostname affects certificates, the profile determines which services exist, updates close known package issues, and the configuration check exposes problems before they affect a customer site.

Connect to the panel and finish the post-install wizard
Use the encrypted panel endpoint
Navigate to https://your-hostname:10000. A hostname that has not reached the server yet can be replaced temporarily with the server’s IP address. Keep the protocol as https; port 10000 is the panel’s SSL endpoint.
#1 Best Overall
Authenticate with root or a sudo-capable account. The wizard appears after installation and asks questions that tailor Virtualmin to the server’s intended workload. Work through it completely rather than dismissing screens and relying on defaults you have not reviewed.
Record the choices you make
Before clicking through, decide whether this machine will provide local mail, spam and virus filtering, local DNS, FTP, or Jailkit. Those decisions determine whether the full profile is appropriate. Also decide whether DNS will be authoritative on this server or maintained by an external DNS operator. Writing these choices down makes later configuration-check warnings easier to interpret.
Set a correct hostname before requesting certificates
Use a dedicated, fully qualified host name
The system hostname should look like host.example.com, not the exact name of a domain you plan to host as a virtual server. Reusing a hosted domain as the machine name creates ambiguity between the control host and the website account. Virtualmin recommends a fresh, supported operating system and a domain whose DNS records point to the server.
A fully qualified hostname must resolve publicly to the machine when you want automatic certificate issuance. Check the hostname’s public DNS record from outside the server’s network and make sure the required service ports are reachable before expecting a trusted certificate.
Understand the certificate request during installation
During installation, Virtualmin attempts to request a real certificate for the system hostname. The request depends on correct DNS resolution and reachable validation ports. If either condition is missing, the request can fail even though Virtualmin itself is installed correctly.
Work temporarily when DNS is not ready
If the hostname certificate cannot be issued yet, log in through the server IP and accept the browser’s temporary warning for setup work. This warning is a sign that the certificate does not yet establish a trusted identity; it is not a reason to expose the panel permanently that way. After DNS points to the server and reachability is corrected, repair the hostname certificate and return to the hostname-based panel address.

Choose the full or mini feature profile
The profile controls which services and packages Virtualmin configures locally. Select the smallest profile that still matches your operational plan, then add omitted features later only when their packages and administration procedures are ready.
Rank #2
| Capability | Full profile | Mini profile |
|---|---|---|
| Local mail handling | Included | Omitted |
| Spam filtering | Included | Omitted |
| Virus filtering | Included | Omitted |
| Local DNS | Included | Omitted |
| FTP | Included | Omitted |
| Jailkit | Included | Omitted |
When the full profile is the right choice
Use full when this server will receive and deliver mail locally, run spam or virus filtering, answer authoritative DNS queries, provide FTP access, or use Jailkit isolation. These services consume resources and create additional maintenance responsibilities, but omitting them would leave an intended workload incomplete.
When mini is safer
Choose mini when mail, DNS, FTP, and related filtering are intentionally supplied elsewhere or are not needed. A mini installation can be extended later, but the necessary packages must be installed and the added services must be included in your monitoring, update, firewall, and backup plan.
Size memory for the profile
Virtualmin’s 2026 automated-installation guidance lists at least 1 GiB of RAM for minimal installations and 4 GiB or more for full installations that include mail, spam filtering, and virus scanning. These are baseline requirements from the installation guidance, not performance guarantees; traffic, applications, databases, and retention policies can require more.

Apply updates before creating a site
Use the dashboard update action
Virtualmin can apply updates from the dashboard with Install All Updates Now. Review the resulting status and allow package operations to finish before starting another administrative task.
Use the operating-system package manager
The Virtualmin FAQ documents these command-line routes:
- On Enterprise Linux systems, run
dnf update -y. - On Debian-derived systems, run
apt-get update && apt-get upgrade -y.
Run the command appropriate to the installed operating system; do not mix package-manager instructions between distributions. If an update requires a reboot, complete it and reconnect to port 10000 before proceeding.
Refresh Virtualmin application installer metadata
If you plan to deploy applications through Virtualmin, enable System Settings → Web App Installers → Installer Updates. This updates the metadata used by Virtualmin-managed application installers; it is separate from updating the operating system packages themselves.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPass the configuration check
Open the check in the correct place
Go to List Virtual Servers and click Check Configuration at the top of the page. Virtualmin’s documentation identifies this as the final installation step. Treat the result as a release gate: do not publish the first production website while errors remain.
Resolve errors by category
- Hostname or DNS errors: verify the fully qualified host name, its public records, and whether the record points to this server.
- Certificate errors: confirm that the hostname resolves publicly and that certificate-validation ports can reach the machine. If you used IP access during setup, repeat certificate setup after those conditions are true.
- Service errors: check that every service selected in the profile is installed and running, or remove an unintended service from the plan.
- Package errors: finish the operating-system and Virtualmin updates, then run the configuration check again.
Keep rerunning the check after each correction. A clean result means the installation’s detected configuration is internally consistent; it does not replace application testing, DNS verification, or a backup restore test.
Create and test the first virtual server
Create only after the check is clean
Once the configuration check passes, create the first virtual server from Virtualmin’s virtual-server workflow. Virtualmin’s installation documentation states: “When you’re done, click Create Virtual Server to create your first website in Virtualmin.” Use the exact domain that will be hosted and confirm that it is not the machine’s system hostname.
Run a functional test matrix
Test only the features you intentionally enabled, and record the result for the domain:
- HTTP: open the domain over HTTP and confirm that the expected virtual-server content is returned.
- HTTPS: open the domain over HTTPS and verify that the certificate matches the domain rather than the temporary panel certificate.
- DNS: check that the domain’s intended records resolve to the correct address and that the authoritative DNS operator is the one you selected.
- Mail: if local mail was enabled, send and receive a test message and confirm delivery in both directions.
- Database: for an application that needs a database, test credentials and connectivity from the application account.
- Account isolation: confirm that the virtual-server user can access its own files and services without unintended access to another account.
Do not mark a service as working merely because its package is installed. The test should exercise the path a real user will use, including DNS, TLS, authentication, and application connectivity where applicable.
Decide where DNS is operated
Local DNS
Local DNS means this Virtualmin server hosts the authoritative records. It fits a deployment where you want DNS administration alongside virtual-server administration and have planned the required service availability. The full profile includes local DNS; the mini profile omits it.
External DNS
With external DNS, another provider maintains the authoritative records while Virtualmin serves the websites and other enabled services. Keep the machine hostname and each hosted domain’s records distinct, and verify changes from outside the server before requesting certificates or testing mail.
Rank #4
Do not mix assumptions
The configuration check and certificate workflow depend on records resolving to the right machine. Decide who operates the records, document that owner, and use that system for the final A, AAAA, MX, and validation-related records required by your deployment.
Configure an off-server backup and prove it works
Why local copies are insufficient
A backup stored only on the Virtualmin host can disappear with the host’s disk, filesystem, or provider account. Configure a destination outside the server so a host failure does not remove both the live data and its only copy.
Use a compatible remote target
Virtualmin 8 release documentation describes cloud-backup enhancements and support for many S3-compatible storage providers. Availability and behavior depend on the installed Virtualmin version, operating system, and provider terms, so verify compatibility before committing a retention policy.
Test the complete recovery path
- Configure credentials with the least privilege needed to write and read the backup set.
- Run a backup that includes the virtual-server data and the configuration needed to rebuild the services you enabled.
- Confirm that the remote destination contains the expected files and that retention is deleting only what you intend.
- Restore a representative website or account to a safe test location.
- Open the restored site, check its database connection, and verify that files and permissions are usable.
- Record how long the backup and restore took, then schedule the next test before the current result is forgotten.
A successful upload proves transport, not recoverability. The restore test is the evidence that the backup can support an outage.

Virtualmin 8 documentation describes enhancements for DNS and backups, Cloudflare DNS and proxy features, and multiple ACME-compatible SSL providers. Treat these as integration options rather than automatic guarantees. Check that the installed Virtualmin version, operating system, DNS design, and provider terms support the specific integration before enabling it.

Troubleshoot the common post-install failures
The browser still shows an SSL warning
Use the IP address only for temporary setup access, then check the hostname’s public DNS and certificate-validation reachability. Once those are correct, repair the hostname certificate and reconnect through the hostname. Do not treat acceptance of the warning as a completed certificate setup.
Best Value
The hostname is the same as the website domain
Change the system hostname to a dedicated name such as host.example.com, while keeping the hosted domain as the virtual server’s domain. Recheck DNS and certificate issuance after the naming change.
The profile does not provide a needed service
If mini was selected but the deployment requires local mail, filtering, DNS, FTP, or Jailkit, install the required packages and enable the feature deliberately. Revisit resource capacity, updates, monitoring, and backups before putting that service into production.
The configuration check reports package or service problems
Finish the relevant package updates, confirm that selected services are installed and running, and run Check Configuration again. Do not hide an error by creating the site first; the check is intended to catch these dependencies before publication.
The site loads but mail, DNS, or the database does not
Return to the test matrix and isolate the failing layer. Confirm which system owns DNS, whether local mail was enabled, and whether the application is using the database credentials for the correct virtual-server account. A successful web response alone does not prove that the other services were configured.
Backups complete but cannot be restored
Check that the remote target contains a complete backup set, that credentials allow reads as well as writes, and that the restore test uses the same Virtualmin and operating-system assumptions as the live server. Correct the job and repeat the restore before relying on it.
A practical first-day checklist
- Panel reachable over HTTPS on port 10000.
- Root or sudo-capable administrative login confirmed.
- Post-install wizard completed and choices recorded.
- Dedicated fully qualified hostname selected.
- Public DNS and certificate-validation reachability verified.
- Full or mini profile matched to the services actually required.
- Memory checked against the 1 GiB minimal or 4 GiB full-profile baseline.
- Operating-system and Virtualmin updates completed.
- Installer Updates enabled if Virtualmin-managed applications will be used.
- Check Configuration passes without unresolved errors.
- First virtual server created only after the clean check.
- HTTP, HTTPS, DNS, mail, and database tests completed where applicable.
- Remote backup configured, inspected, and restored successfully in a test.
With these gates complete, Virtualmin has moved from an installed control panel to an operational hosting platform: its identity is established, the selected services are intentional, the first account has been exercised, and recovery has been demonstrated.
