What’s actually slowing this PC down?

For a deployment process running on the same server as PostgreSQL, use local Unix-socket peer authentication: create a dedicated login role, add a narrowly scoped local rule in pg_hba.conf, reload PostgreSQL, and run migrations as the matching operating-system account. No database password is needed because PostgreSQL verifies the operating-system identity.
Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
A remote runner cannot use peer. Use a tightly restricted host rule with scram-sha-256 and store the password in the deploy account’s .pgpass file when a non-interactive secret is required. Avoid broad trust rules: they let any client covered by the rule claim the database role without proving an identity.

What passwordless PostgreSQL access actually means
Passwordless does not mean unauthenticated. It means the deployment command does not stop for an interactive password prompt. PostgreSQL still applies an authentication method selected by pg_hba.conf, then separately checks whether the authenticated role is allowed to connect and perform the requested migration.
PostgreSQL evaluates pg_hba.conf from top to bottom and uses the first record that matches the connection. A later, more secure line cannot override an earlier broad match. After editing the file, reload the server configuration; a restart is not normally required.

Choose the connection method before changing anything
| Option | Connection scope | Interactive password prompt | Main security property | Main operational caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
peer |
Local Unix socket only | No | Binds the database login to the operating-system identity | Requires the deployment process and PostgreSQL to share a host, with matching identities or an explicit map |
trust |
Any connection matched by its HBA rule | No | None beyond network and HBA reachability | Any allowed client can claim the named database role; restrict it extremely narrowly or avoid it |
SCRAM with .pgpass |
Local or TCP | No interactive prompt | Password authentication combined with file-permission control | The secret still exists and must be protected, rotated and kept out of command lines |
Use peer for a same-host release service
Choose peer when the release service, CI worker or deployment script runs on the PostgreSQL host. The client connects through a Unix-domain socket, and PostgreSQL obtains the operating-system user name. A rule such as local appdb deploy_user peer therefore accepts a connection only when the process is running as the operating-system identity PostgreSQL expects for deploy_user.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse SCRAM for a remote runner
A runner on another machine connects over TCP, so a local rule never applies. Use a host rule limited to the exact database, role and source address, with scram-sha-256 or another method approved for your environment. Put the secret in .pgpass if the job must authenticate without prompting.
Do not mistake trust for a safe shortcut
trust performs no identity check for clients covered by the matching record. PostgreSQL documentation states: This method allows anyone that can connect to the PostgreSQL database server to login as any PostgreSQL user they wish, without the need for a password or any other authentication. A broad network trust line can therefore turn a reachable database role into an account anyone on that network can impersonate.
Prepare a dedicated deploy identity
Create a separate database login
Do not reuse a human administrator role or the operating-system account used by unrelated services. Create a login role dedicated to releases. The role can have no password when it is used only through local peer authentication.
CREATE ROLE deploy_user LOGIN;
Run this as a PostgreSQL administrator. If the role already exists, inspect it instead of creating a second identity. Keep the Unix account used by CI or the release service separate from human accounts so that an audit can connect a migration to one service identity.
Grant only deployment privileges
Authentication does not grant data access. Give the role the ability to connect and only the schema, table, sequence or function privileges that the migration process needs. Start with the database-level permission:
GRANT CONNECT ON DATABASE appdb TO deploy_user;
Then connect to appdb and grant the required object privileges there. The exact grants depend on your migration framework and schema. Avoid making the deploy role a superuser merely to eliminate permission errors; fix the missing, narrowly defined grant instead.

Configure local peer authentication step by step
1. Find the active HBA file
PostgreSQL may not use the file you expect, especially on systems with multiple clusters or package versions. Ask the server for its active path:
SHOW hba_file;
You can also identify it through the service configuration or the PostgreSQL tooling used by your distribution. Edit the file reported by the running server, not an unused sample file.
2. Add a specific rule before broad rules
Insert a rule near the top of the active file, before any broader local rule that could match first:
# TYPE DATABASE USER ADDRESS METHOD
local appdb deploy_user peer
local means Unix-domain sockets. The database and role names are exact matches in this example. There is no address column for a local rule. Keep the rule specific to the deployment database and role rather than using all all peer unless you have a deliberate reason to cover every local login.
3. Match the operating-system account
With the rule above, the operating-system user normally needs to have the same name as the database role. Run the migration as that account, for example:
sudo -u deploy_user psql --dbname=appdb --command='SELECT current_user, current_database();'
Use your real service-account and role names. The command is a verification procedure; it does not assume those names exist on your host.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →4. Reload, rather than restart, the configuration
HBA rules are read at startup and when the server receives a SIGHUP. After saving the file, reload the running instance:
SELECT pg_reload_conf();
The query should return true when PostgreSQL accepted the reload request. A service-manager reload that sends SIGHUP is equivalent when performed against the correct instance.

5. Check for syntax errors
Inspect the parsed rules from SQL:
SELECT line_number, type, database, user_name, address, auth_method, error
FROM pg_hba_file_rules
ORDER BY line_number;
A non-null error value identifies a line PostgreSQL could not parse. Correct the file and reload again. The view also helps prove which rule order the server is seeing.
6. Test the exact path used by deployment
Run the test as the same Unix account and with the same database selection that the migration command will use. A successful result should show deploy_user as current_user and appdb as current_database(). Add a harmless authorization check:
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallSELECT current_user,
current_database(),
has_database_privilege(current_user, current_database(), 'CONNECT');
This separates identity problems from privilege problems. If the query authenticates but later migration statements fail, inspect object grants rather than changing the authentication method.
Map different Unix and database names with pg_ident.conf
A release service may run as deployer while the database role is intentionally named deploy_user. Do not rename either account solely to satisfy peer authentication. Define an exact identity map in the active pg_ident.conf:
deploymap deployer deploy_user
The fields are the map name, operating-system user and database user. Restrict the map to the one relationship required by the service; do not use a wildcard that allows every Unix account to become the deploy role.
Reference that map in the HBA rule:
local appdb deploy_user peer map=deploymap
Reload after changing both configuration files, then run the test command as deployer. A map mismatch produces a peer-authentication failure even when the HBA syntax is valid.

Configure a remote deploy host with SCRAM
Use a host rule, not a local rule
For a runner connecting over TCP, add a rule that names the exact database, role and source CIDR. The following address is documentation-only and must be replaced with the runner’s real fixed address or a tightly controlled network:
# TYPE DATABASE USER ADDRESS METHOD
host appdb deploy_user 203.0.113.10/32 scram-sha-256
A /32 limits the match to one IPv4 address. Place this specific line before broader host rules because first match wins. If the runner’s egress address changes, the connection may stop matching; update the controlled CIDR deliberately rather than opening access to every address.

Give the role a password suitable for non-interactive use
SCRAM requires a password verifier for the role. Set or rotate the role’s password through your approved administrative or secret-management process, and never put the cleartext secret in a migration command, shell history or source repository. The HBA method authenticates the role; the role’s CONNECT and object grants still determine what the migration can do.
Make the client select TCP intentionally
Use the database host, port, database and user values supplied by your deployment system. A command that omits the host may select a local Unix socket instead, while a host name or IP selects a TCP rule. Confirm the actual route with the client’s connection-information output before diagnosing the wrong HBA line.
Store a required password in .pgpass
When policy requires password authentication, use the deploy account’s password file or a path selected with PGPASSFILE. Each line has five colon-separated fields:
hostname:port:database:username:password
The first matching line wins. An asterisk can match a field, which is convenient but less restrictive; prefer exact host, port, database and username values when practical. Escape a colon and a backslash that appear inside a field according to libpq password-file rules.
Set Unix permissions correctly
On Unix, make the file readable only by the account running the deployment:
chmod 0600 ~/.pgpass
PostgreSQL ignores the file when group or world access is permitted. Check the file owner, parent directory access and the path used by the service account. A common failure is creating .pgpass in an administrator’s home directory while the migration runs under a different account.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Prefer a password file over PGPASSWORD
Do not rely on PGPASSWORD for production automation. Operating-system tools and diagnostics can expose process environment variables. The libpq documentation recommends a password file instead, with permissions that prevent other users from reading it.
Why a broad trust rule is dangerous
A rule such as host all all 0.0.0.0/0 trust removes the password check for every IPv4 client that can reach the server. A network firewall may reduce exposure, but the HBA rule itself still lets each allowed client present any database user name. The same risk applies to an overly broad local trust rule for Unix sockets.
Best Value
If a temporary diagnostic requires trust, scope it to one database, one role and the smallest possible source address, place it only where the intended rule can be evaluated, and remove it immediately after the test. In normal deployment design, peer for same-host services or SCRAM with a protected password file for remote services provides an actual identity check.
Troubleshoot the most common failures
psql still asks for a password
- The client may be using TCP because a host name, IP address or connection string was supplied. Use the intended Unix-socket path for peer, or configure SCRAM and
.pgpassfor TCP. - A broader rule may appear before the peer line. Reorder the entries and reload.
- The command may be running under a different Unix account than expected. Print the service account identity and compare it with the role or map.
- The client may be connecting to another cluster or port. Confirm the server and database selected by the deployment environment.
Peer authentication failed
- Without a map, the operating-system name and database role must match.
- With
map=deploymap, check the exact spelling and field order inpg_ident.conf. - Ensure the HBA rule names the database and role actually supplied by the client.
- Reload both configuration files after correcting them.
No pg_hba.conf entry for the connection
This means no record matched all relevant fields. Check whether the client used a Unix socket or TCP, whether the database and role names are correct, and whether the remote source address falls inside the configured CIDR. Add a specific rule before broad entries and reload.
Recommended Free Tools
Changes appear to have no effect
- Run
SHOW hba_file;to verify that you edited the active file. - Query
pg_hba_file_rulesand correct any reported parse error. - Reload the correct PostgreSQL instance. Editing a file without a SIGHUP or equivalent reload leaves the old rules active.
- Look for an earlier matching line; PostgreSQL stops at the first match.
The .pgpass file is ignored
- Run
chmod 0600 ~/.pgpassas the deploy account and verify ownership. - Check that the service actually uses that home directory, or set
PGPASSFILEto an explicitly secured path. - Verify every field in the line, including host, port, database and username. The first matching line wins.
- Escape colons and backslashes inside the password-file fields.
Authentication succeeds but the migration gets permission denied
Do not weaken HBA authentication to solve an authorization error. Confirm that the role has CONNECT on the database and the exact schema, table, sequence or function privileges required by the migration. Authentication proves who the client is; SQL privileges decide what that identity may change.
Operate the setup safely over time
Keep identities dedicated and least-privileged
Use one operating-system service account and one database role for the deployment path. Keep human administration separate, grant only migration permissions, and review those grants when the schema or release tooling changes.
Protect and rotate secrets when SCRAM is required
The password in .pgpass is still a credential. Restrict file and directory permissions, keep it out of backups and logs where possible, rotate it through the same controlled process used for other service secrets, and update the deployment environment atomically.
Keep HBA rules narrow and ordered
Specify the database and role instead of all where possible. For remote access, constrain the source CIDR and place the rule before generic host entries. Review the complete parsed rule list after every change so a later edit does not accidentally broaden the effective match.
Test the real migration path after infrastructure changes
A successful SELECT current_user, current_database() proves identity and routing, while has_database_privilege checks database access. Run a harmless migration or dry-run using the same service account, connection parameters and working directory used in production before declaring the setup complete.
Quick Recap
Final decision checklist
- Same host and Unix socket: use a dedicated role with a specific
local ... peerrule. - Different Unix and database names: add a narrowly defined
pg_ident.confmap and reference it withpeer map=.... - Remote runner: use a specific
host ... scram-sha-256rule and restrict the source CIDR. - Non-interactive SCRAM: store credentials in a permission-protected
.pgpassorPGPASSFILE, notPGPASSWORD. - Every design: reload after HBA changes, inspect
pg_hba_file_rules, verify the exact connection path, and grant only the deployment privileges required. - Avoid broad
trustrules unless every client covered by the rule is fully trusted and the exposure is intentional.
